Purple Haze Courtyard 紫苏庭
Now in rustic hutong digs featuring two dining rooms, a bar area and a small covered courtyard where live music is peformed, this hip eatery offers the same authentic Thai cuisine (Thai green coconut chicken curry, red beef curry, spicy raw prawn salad etc.) that have won it a loyal Beijing following since the original Purple Haze opened back in 2006. Jazz-heads can expect the same great live music on Wednesday and Sunday nights (8-10pm). Entrees start around RMB 50, set lunch menus available. Voted "Best Thai" in the Beijinger's 2010 Reader Restaurant Awards.

As genuine Thai food as you can get in the 'jing
Purple Haze Courtyard is just down the road from our apartment so us and our friends head there quite regularly when our pores are chock full of grease from Beijing cuisine. I have been to many other Thai/Vietnamese restaurants in Beijing but all seem geared for the Chinese palate. No freshness and no subtle flavours and everything cooked down into a incomprehensible mess.
At Purple Haze I think they have got their food just about spot on. I was a bit hesitant in going there last week after just arriving back from Thailand. I thought I would be put off having had the real deal only a week prior. But I wasn't and I would gladly go back time and time again. No Thai chef the other reviewers say? Who cares?! Could there be a chance that the people making the food have been Thailand, cooked with a Thai Chef before? And Thai food isn't about complex cooking methods..it is about the combination of flavours. Any half decent chef could cook Thai..as long as their tastebuds know what their doing.
The place itself is nice and quaint and, if you're in for a romantic night, go on a Monday or Tuesday and you will generally have the restaurant to yourself. Order a few reasonably priced cocktails, sit back and enjoy the quiet..something almost unheard of in Beijing.

Decent food doesn't make it worth the service
Went there for dinner tonight. I enjoyed the food, but this isn't a review of the food. After they brought the dishes, the waiter didn't come back once to see if we needed anything or refills on drinks. I had to go find someone to get the bill, and I found the manager playing solitare on a computer and the servers sitting around a table playing with their cell phones.
I gave it two stars because the food was solid, but with so many good places to eat in Beijing, I probably won't go back.

Just okay place
This place is one of the ok places for thai food. Yes it is may not be managed by thai people but still okay.
You get food in time and its reasonable and though slightly pricey for the portions. But all thai restaurants are almost the same.

Very good Thai food
A bit to the West of our usual haunts but easy to get to on the 701 bus (really).
Worth finding - a pleasant courtyard space, quite small and so, not too noisy.
Very good Thai food - some of the best I've had in Beijing or elsewhere.
The jazz night makes a pleasant evening on Wednesdays - Jazz trio.
We had very good service - the staff looked after us well and efficiently.

OK for Thai food - service needs to be improved
The Purple Haze Courtyard is close to Culture Yard so we recently decided on our first visit to this restaurant. We arrived at the courtyard, expecting live jazz music. There was no music, and there were no guests. Our second try was better - we enjoyed a beef curry and a coconut vegetable curry. The portions were not as small as mentioned in other reviews. We ordered two dishes - it was enough for two.
One thing we don't like about Purple Haze Courtyard is the seemlingly unmotivated and unhelpful staff. It's too bad, because the place does have potential. The courtyard is nice, the decoration not too bad, the food is good, and live jazz music is a great idea. For now, we will keep on going to Purple Haze - but then just for takeaway Thai food.

Not affliated with Purple Haze management
Excuse me, but I don't think panic and disturbed is how most people would characterize my response to your review - which was very harsh and negative. I think it is quite normal to question someone with such strong views on a restaurant as yourself for other options which are better, which helps put context on your original review. You indicate you "don’t know how a Thai restaurant without Thai people around can cook authentic Thai foods and win “Best Thai Restaurant” so I was curious to hear which restaurant you thought was more authentic and better. Even if Purple Haze is as terrible as you suggest, it might still be the best in Beijing if there is no better one.
Most of us come here to find out where would be good places to eat. So perhaps you might want to make some thoughtful suggestions rather than shouting in all CAPs how insulted you are by the fact that other people liked the restaurant you disliked. Any review as negative as yours is inviting response. You will see from other posts I have made here asks readers for alternatives when they suggest in negative reviews that there are better options are available.
And no, I don't work in the food or beverage industry, and certainly not with Purple Haze. I do like Thai food however, and am trying to find good options for Thai food in Beijing. Thanks for your help.

NOT AUTHENTIC THAI RESTAURANT !
Are you affiliated with owner of Purple Haze ? was the review disturbed you ? if so, then no need for me to answer your questions.
It is only a review of the place no intention comparing with others.
You are also free to comment and review, but not questioning my review.
Only guilty people feel panic when the truth reveal.

response to beijingranger
Although I certainly agree that you would find much better food at most basic places in Bangkok, I wonder which in Beijing is better than Purple Haze (gongti branch)? I have not found one since the closure of Red Basil. The offerings at Purple Haze are reliable and closer to real Thai than any other place in Beijing I have been to. I am happy to be corrected on this...
Please don't say Serve the People, which although decent, is Thai-Chinese fusion. Perhaps Phrik Thai is close, but I would be interested in hearing other suggestions.

NOT AUTHENTIC THAI RESTAURANT !
I just don’t get it, Thai Restaurant without Thai Chef can win “Best Thai Restaurant” ???
Come on !!!
Went there yesterday night for dinner, nothing of the dishes taste authentic, we just tried most common Thai foods, papaya salad, tomyumkung, padthai, and green curry, most dishes no power at all, taste bland and nothing rather than only salty taste like Chinese dishes pretending as Thai dishes, nothing was authentic. Asked the waiters, who cooked the dishes, it is the Thai or or Chinese chef, he said they have no Thai chef, no wonder !
I don’t know how a Thai restaurant without Thai people around can cook authentic Thai foods and win “Best Thai Restaurant”.
To make the matter worse, nothing of us felt full as the portions very small ! not worth your money !
Maybe this restaurant win “Thai Best Restaurant” only because they have nice room, atmosphere and live music, but not for the foods definitely !

Good Thai
I have yet to find a Thai restaurant that blows me away, but Purple Haze is one of my personal favorites.
Agree with other reviewer that portions are small especially considering the price.

Good Thai
The papaya salad, Green curry with chicken, the spicy shrimps with coconut milk are my favourites.
After the drinks this is one of my dinner places,if I long for the Thai food when I come to Beijing.

Portions Too Small
I agree with the previous reviewer. The portions in this restaurant are miniscule. It's almost insulting.

Good food, but sometimes not enough
I went to Purple Haze bistro once, and I took a lunch set. From what I can say the food is as good as in Purple Haze (which means simply delicious) but the lunch set isn't a good idea, unless maybe if you're alone.
Indeed, portions are really small, and ordering "normal" dishes that you'll share with several people may not cost much more, but will satisfy your appetite much much more.
Apart from that, also a peaceful place with nice furniture.
