Purple Haze Restaurant and Bar 紫苏庭
This cozy Gongti-area Thai restaurant (and progenitor of the Purple Haze Bistro) boasts books, coffee, WiFi, and some of the tastiest Thai and Southeast Asian cuisine in town - i.e. papaya salad, Tom Yam Kung and a selection of curries - as well as a nice selection of cocktails and beers. Good for a lazy afternoon or the start to a rowdy night on the town. Available for private parties and events. Voted "Best Thai" in the Beijinger's 2011 Reader Restaurant Awards.

Nothing special but worth it if you are in the area.
I've lived within walking distance for about 4 years, so I've eaten at Purple Haze countless times. This is not the type of place that you "must" try while you're in Beijing. I wouldn't take out-of-town guests here either. But if you are in the area and hungry, Purple Haze is fine.
The food is ok. Purple Haze's potato chicken curry isn't bad and they don't skimp on the rice, but you can exactly replicate the dish at home with store bought curry paste. Their "Thai burritos" make for a decent lunch dish. I'd avoid most of the fried dishes because they are often oily and over done. The chicken soup is tasty but be prepared for some strong flavors.
The interior is reasonably comfortable although it hasn't been redone in several years. The dining area and bathrooms are clean. The chairs and sofas are comfortable (think: second hand couch you'd find in a college dorm room).
I've had great, inattentive and horrible service. Service standards are pretty random. Typically, no one is going to ask you if you want a refill but the staff won't go out of their way to ignore you.
My bill usually ends up around 100 RMB per person, not counting adult beverages. That's about right. Purple Haze isn't a high-end, destination restaurant but it's not a dusty noodle & dumpling shop either.

Loved the foods.
As in above comment many gentlemen had already expressed their view towards the foods that they have tasted in the Purpal Haze Restaurant and Bar. I think they are satisfied with the tastes and the services they were provided in this restaurant. Once I have also visited this restaurant, and I too liked the foods, drinks and the warm welcome. You know everyone have rights to express their view. In my view if this restaurant manages to play the western music then the customers would love more. I don't have any dough about foods and all the services they are providing. They are good. However, the guests are always searching for new things. So, if they would bring the nice western musician in the restaurant then they will not forget the restaurant as I haven't forgotten it because of its delicious foods. At last I would like to say that chicken soup became my favorite after I visited this restaurant.

Thai food lovers.
Restaurant was full, we asked for 2 watermelon juices and were delicious.
After looking at the menu, we decided to go for the vermicelli, papaya salad, and bbq pork. Everything was outstanding, I love spicy and I have to say that everything was perfect . I've gone several times to thailand i this restaurant is the closest taste to Thailand.
In my opinion, the sofas are to low, maybe cushions?
The waiters treated us in English.

nice Thai restaurant
Like the chicken and pumpkin red curry. But the restaurant was pretty busy every night. You'd better make a reservation in advance.

What's with all the fuss?
Went to Purple Haze the other day.
After reading all the good review out there, we went with quite a high expectations and came out all but satisfied. Well, my Thai friend was already disappointed the moment she found out PH don't have Thai chef..:-)
we ordered Papaya salad, Green curry chicken, Tom yum gong, and Pad thai. The papaya salad was not spicy as it should be, watery and too sour. The pad thai taste like chinese chow mien. For me, the best dish would be the tom yum gong whilst my other friends loved the curry.
The service was good, price was reasonable (198RMB for 4 dishes). We also got complementary Tsing Tao on arrival. But I'd choose 'Serve The People' anyday.
ps: None of the Thai resto in Beijing can beat the Thai resto in Sydney such as Chat Thai, Spice I Am or even Thai Pothong!

Better than Banana Leaf -just ok
The beef curry and the green chicken curry, rice with some prawn salad and a drink cost me over 200 yuan. The price is not the issue the meal was not spicy as I would like it from authentic flavour perspective. The place had good number of customers so guess must be doing a good job but I was not impressed as lacked the original thai flavour.

Purple Haze- Just OK
I live next to Purple Haze, have been there twice, the food is OK, pretty bland. I cook Thai food and can tell that there are spices missing in the curry. For authentic Thai curry with gestalt and kick one must add fresh galanga, kaffir lime leaves and rhizomes, which are not easy to find unless you go to a good Thai market. These ingredients separate the rest from the best. The chef in Purple Haze is Chinese. I'm sorry but I want my Thai food cooked by a Thai, thank you. 5 out of 10 for the food. I must say though that the service is very attentive and the ambiance is casual cool.

The illusive last 10 Percent -
Its as good as one can expect from a thai resteraunt that is not owned by a thai. Of course, if a white guy tried to open a Sichuan Restaurant in LA, he'd probably get laughed out of town. You won't send the Chicken Curry back to the kitchen, but you won't be telling friends about it. Extra points for a little live music, unless it's five feet away while you're paying a high price for that chicken curry. The working girls from the Den seem to like taking guys there, for some reason. Anyone know of a Thai Place that is OWNED by Thais? Do share the word - I'd like to visit a place that achieves that illusive last ten percent.

Purple Haze rocks!
I am loving the restaurants available in this neiborhood.
Purple Haze is a great space, with nice staff and a great menu. I have been 3 times and all three were great experiences.
Love so many of their foods, have had their green curry with beef and then with chicken
great! the steamed fish was also very tasty.
I tried their bbq beef salad - so good i could have that everyday
good food, good service, good prices
no wonder they win the awards they do

Very good service and food
We had dinner there with some foreign clients, I am not a specialist about thai food but I was very satisfied, the atmosphere is comfortable and cozy, the service very good, and the prices are not too much.
Note that it seems you can have as much rice as you want when you order a curry.
Usually full of foreigners, very few chinese people in this place. Very convenient location ( just 2 min walk from the worker stadium, close to a lot of bars...)
Already been there twice in 2 weeks !

People are getting wealthier?
Saw the previous reviews and found that people are getting wealthier that they are too insensitive to the pricing of foods nowadays.
Tried Purple Haze yesterday since it has been voted as Best Thai Restaurant in town. Well, maybe I had too much expectation since its suppose to be the best. These were what I ordered:
1) Red Curry Beef - Red Curry is okay, not spectacularly good, but acceptable, however the beef is not tender enough, its just beef, and they did not take into the consideration that the fire to keep the dish hot will eventually make the beef gets overcooked since you are not going to finish this big pot of beef within 3 mins. The portion is ok.
2) Deep fried Shrimp dices - No good. Tasteless. Not crispy too. Disappointing.
3) Tom Yum Gong - Pretty good, can't complain too much, pretty traditional.
4) Pad Thai - Pretty good too. Will order this one again if happens to revisit.
Well, first of all, I still think that since the store is located on the 2nd floor, the rental shall be much cheaper, and the restaurant could actually lower down the price a little (one of the most expensive thai restaurant in town for sure), lucky the portion given is acceptable, but for 2 persons, we can hardly order more dishes to try.
Secondly, since its the best Thai Restaurant, it gives me the feeling of being a fusion thai restaurant with mixed South East Asian cuisines, either it has been localised or customized to suit the caucasians.
Been trying to find a pure traditional thai restaurant but unfortunately, the best Thai Restaurant in town isn't just what I expect it to be. Need improvement to really qualified to be the best in town.
Anyway, service is acceptable too.

cozy place - if you find it
we surrounded the block before, more by coincidence, hitting the place.
cozy atmosphere, 90% foreigners, humongous portions of rice, excellent green curry coming in a sizzling clay pot, the Thai platter isn't a revelation.
Don't visit a Thai place if you don't like spicy stuff - even the single chili sign on the menu fully deserves its mark :SS
a pretty noisy shaker at the bar when we were there.

Good thai
A nice Thai place where the prices are moderate for what you get. The vibe is nice and it's a rather casual place. English is good and one of the owner is Swedish so you will find many Swedes here.

Just the best meals I had in 北京
Twice I went two Purple Haze, and twice I left completely full, and happy. Really, eating there will brighten your day. Their red curry chicken with coconut is the dish I enjoyed the most so far in Beijing.
I don't agree that portions are small. Not only they are big enough to my opinion, but if you order rice they will come back to offer you some more if you finished your plate (unfortunately, I was never able to accept as I was already full).
The place is nice, as well as the atmosphere and prices are ok.

Purple haze all in my brain
Friendly restuarant that is unable or unwilling to enforce its own no smoking ban since before beijing tried unsuccessfully. Good wine list. American style thai food from imperial bangkok. Food is good portions are small. Prices are ok
