Best Steak Tartare in town !

Review of Scarlett

I love being able to eat smth small and simple at a bar from time to time and Scarlett has a menu that also offers quick but original bites. To my surprise I saw a new element to their menu : Steak Tartare. And guess what ? Cut by hand !!! Sorry Brasserie Flo but this Tartare is the best one I had in Beijing. Hand-cut tartare is just the way it should be. Next time I'll have it I'll ask the kitchen to chop the veggies a little smaller and we'll reach perfection ! :-) On the other side I think the service speed could still be improved, especially the order processes from waiter to barmen/kitchen, I often have to ask twice for small orders to come quicker.

What can i Say?

Cheese, Meat and Wine. Can't get better than that. I recommend the rose wine they serve with it.
The 198rmb platter was enough for two of us. So good!

Good for Sunday brunch as well...

A mate recommended Scarlett for a good Sunday brunch location. A more personal and relaxed version of the mega lunches in the bigger hotels. He was right, the place has a good Sunday vibe going on, other dinners were eclectic - a large tables of friends at one end, a few family groups, and occasional business type person immersed in newspapers or laptops. All very normal and relaxed. A good a la carte menu, or the buffet for 138RMB.

The food was great, clearly a chef who knows his cheese and won't skimp on quality. The staff very efficient and friendly, perhaps a little keen to get those plates cleared away - but what restaurant in Asia does not suffer that problem.

We're glad we made the effort to find it, G Hotel is easy enough to spot, but its side street location does make it a place you need to plan to go to rather than just pop in. There's a smokers half and non smokers half (well until 1 May anyway). I'm looking forward to coming back to try the tapas.

Like their tapas and burger. very cozy place with vintage-style renovation, wooden table and leather couch, good for happy hours and afterwork drink plus dinner. can also enjoy wine and food outdoor before it's getting cold

Ummmmmm, tapas

Awesome tapas and drink deals for happy hour. One of the best cheese plate selections in town. Suggest you go with a group so you can get a big selection of meats, cheeses and tapas and order as you go. Every time I go, we end up ordering more and more and hang out there for the rest of the evening.

Can be a little tough to find, so check the map if you have not been before.

Wine selection is so so.

Great tapas, bad drink deals

I tried out Scarlett the other night for their tapas special on Thursday (88 kuai, free flow tapas). I must say the tapas are excellent, with the feta cheese and cheese croquettes are my favorite. After a few rounds of tapas, you certainly get your money's worth. What is disappointing is that they lack any form of drink specials (the advertised 38 kuai sangrias didn't exist according to the waitstaff). When I am out on a Thursday, I expect at least a happy hour, but couldn't find this at Scarlett. After the 10pm cut off for tapas, the place cleared out, which seems like a missed opportunity to me If they offered a great drink deal, with the tapas, that place would be packed to the gills till closing time.

not spainish tapas but...

Went for Tapas Night, some of them tapas were very good, especially the Cold ones like the eggplant caviar, the feta salad, the vegetables, and sushi vegetables and good tangy gaspacho soup. the mexican tacos and the fried octopus and shrimp were also good. the meatballs were great, and they had good wine. the cocktails were overly pricey though at 58 rmb.but the portions were very small and of course it isn't real spanish tapas but you know...

"Nice location"

Scarlett is nice place to try some decent wines and the cheese selection is good.
I had to change my review, because it turns out the old Burger concept has now changed to a Wine-bar-restaurant one.
The wines are pricey, although you can get some reasonable deals for the wines by the glass.
The small tapas is an interesting choice if you want something to bite on while drinking your wine, but don't expect to have any feeling of fulness whatsoever.
When i checked, the salmon was a bit on a mushy side and the bread was unsalted. what's the deal with that?
Anyway. the vibe is ok, but there is lots of room for improvement.

Great Vibe and Food

Scarlett is rapidly turning into one of my favorite Western restaurants in town...

The atmosphere itself is nice. Upscale club vibe... lots of leather and red (given the name), dub/house music, and plenty of "beautiful people." Its a little hotel-bar-esque at times (it is in a hotel, after all), but it doesn't feel like hanging in a Howard Johnson's lobby lounge or anything like that...

The waitstaff are appropriately attentive and pleasant. As the place primarily caters to Westerners, the level of English is pretty good, too.

The food itself is great. The recently overhauled menu is oriented around wine and tapas. The chef stocks a great selection of imported cheeses and charcuterie... I love to go and get a cheese plate, a charcuterie plate, and a bottle of wine. The mussels and fries (moules frites) are fantastic. And the burger is arguably one of the best I've had in Beijing. Smothered with blue cheese and bacon, its fantastic. My only complaint is, as someone else pointed out, the bun gets mushy fast.

It ain't cheap, but I feel like the value is solid and that relative to other restaurants with similar personalities and menus, its actually on the bargain side. Dinner for two + a bottle of wine rarely costs me more than RMB 450 (with half of that being wine).

And the "check box" tapas menu is dirt cheap... 3 small tapas plates for 28 kuai...

Lastly, its got a great pool-table that's well-maintained and well-serviced. If you can handle the French pool-sharks, its great for billiards fans.

Is their grille set at 25 degrees

Have to say the atmosphere is nice, perhaps too nice for a burger joint. It is a dark, trendy, American bar setting that doesnt really jive with good old burgers.
The beef is imported from the US and the fixings are impressive. They were out of a few types of cheese when I went but they still had a good selection. The sauces are a little oily on top of the burgers and the garlic was a little strong and bitter.
The onion rings are ok, but leave something to be desired. The french fries are excellent.
The griddle fries the burger, much to my distaste as I prefer grilled burgers with a nice sear. I went with a larger party, twice and both times the meat was seriously undercooked. The first time I ordered rare, my compainions ordered medium and medium well. The first time they came out the med well was rather bloody and my burger was still red on the outside. Even after sending it back and asking them to cook it longer the meat was still undercooked. The second time I went I ordered medium and my friend ordered med well and again the meat was undercooked although after complaining they did finally cook it long enough and we got free ice cream.
The waiters are well meaning but too attentive. They try to pour your sodas whenever you drain off a sip, they are always bringing you extra napkins and trying to take away your plate before you are done.
Not what I expected when forking over 150 kuai a person for a burger.

25 degrees: Bring a fat wallet

Went today for lunch and we ordered a couple of burgers - while the meat itself was top-notch and the fixings (pesto, mozarella, horseradish) were "gourmet" enough, the bread on my burger got kind of soggy after a few bites from all the burger juice.

Also, while I can understand charging a premium for finer ingredients, I though the RMB30 price for a can of coke was a bit excessive.

All said, we enjoyed our lunch and the service was good, but the RMB 310 bill for what was essentially two burgers, a coke and an order of fries makes me want to think twice about going back - premium positioning or not.
