The Irish Volunteer

The Irish Volunteer is the latest pub to enter the expat pocket of the Lido area. As the name suggests, it is Irish-themed. The bar is replete with the staples of any self-respecting Irish pub; historical photos hang on its exposed brick walls and there’s the expected Guinness branding on the bar counter. The Guinness itself will empty RMB 60 from your pocket for a pint, while Carlsberg comes in at RMB 25. There’s also a food selection on a menu that contains more spirited alternatives to beer. This two-room saloon is a nice alternative venue for Lido locals but it might prove a little too pricey for actual volunteers.

Keep your pants off

Review of The Irish Volunteer

Like most places in Lido this place just about does enough to please without having a 'wow' factor. If you fancy some pizza, this place isnt going to get you off the sofa. Gung Ho will deliver the same 'meh' experience without you having to put any pants on.

The Bar is quite lively, and the customer service is comfortably above the Beijing average. The pizza is a bit of a disappointment. It looks great, and is a good sized pie, but the taste is distinctly average. Just another run of the mill cheese on toast effort.

The interior can get quite uncomfortably hot in summer and I have seen a couple of people have fainting episodes.

This place isnt bad, but doesnt get the juices flowing.

Best Pizza in Beijing

I went to an event held at The Irish Volunteer last night. The staff were such friendly and generous hosts. The bonus was that we discovered that the bar is home to the best pizza in Beijing! We are all going to head back to Lido just for that pizza!

Only attraction is the foreign channels

The bar environment and few foreign channels is the only attraction. There are so many such in Beijing,so also the small place deterrs our group. I still like the one near starbucks near jenny lous at lido.
There are few more people and this place is lively. The Irish volunteer most times is so lonely.

Good Food, Booze, and Atmosphere

Great burger, fries, and Irish stew (don't know if it was authentic, never been to Ireland) in the RMB 40's price range, and 45 for an Erdinger. Clean and comfortable environment and very attentive staff. Overall, highly recommended!

This is one of the smaller bars in the city, but its a great spot and well worth checking out if you're in the Lido area. The staff is all really friendly and will know you by name by your 2nd or 3rd visit, drink prices are reasonable with a great happy hour and the food is surprisingly good for a bar. It's also the only place to show NHL games in Beijing, carrying Hockey Night in Canada live every Sunday and offering a large breakfast for RMB30. One of my favorite spots in the city for a drink and the kind of place you know you can go to and find friends every night of the week.

LOTS OF CORNER TABLES, BIG SCREENS, NICE TASTING BAR FOOD, AND AVAILABILITY OF ALL FAMOUS BOOZE BRANDS MAKE THE IRISH VOLUNTEER AN IDEAL END OF THE DAY RETREAT WITH YOUR BUDS. IF YOU ARE A "COCKTAIL PERSON" THE IV MAY NOT BE FOR YOU, BUT YOU GET THE REAL DEAL WITH SPIRITS & BEERS.

You could call the IV a bar; you could call the IV a collection of characters.
Some come for the restaurant caliber burgers and wings, some for the sports games broadcast over live US cable feed and some, simply for the Guinness: “That line there, where the black meets the white, where does it begin and where does it end,” mused a man staring into his pint with misty eyes. “That’s infinity there...you could get lost in that.”
Don’t expect a memorable mohito or martini at this lovable little dive.
Expect whiskey, fresh beer and good cheer.
