The Kro's Nest 乌巢

Founded a few years back by an entrepreneurial young expat fresh out of school, both branches of The Kro's Nest (the two-story 700sqm Gongti branch that caters to Gongti/Sanlitun nightowls, and the student friendly Haidian venue bedecked with high ceilings, stone archways,a foosball table and a lively atmosphere) serves salads, piquant BBQ wings, calzones, onion rings, fries, and their famous table-tipping NYC-style pizzas. The bar also serves a range of cocktails, a small selection of wine and beer (bottled and draft, RMB 10-40). Free Tsingtao beer on Tuesday nights and other weekly beer specials. Daily lunch specials from 11.30am-3pm. Voted "Outstanding Pizza" in the Beijinger's 2010 Reader Restaurant Awards.

Kro's Nest - Rest in Peace

Review of The Kro's Nest

For three years I regularly organized farewell parties for my exchange students at the original joint near Beida. Kro was the heart and soul of the place. Kro's Nest was THE place with the best "American style" pizza in town and the best pizza in Haidian. The Wudaokou competition couldn't touch them in terms of food quality/quantity, service and general "feel good" atmosphere. The Gongti and Beitaiping locations could not completely recreate the Beida feeling. The enlargement of the Beida place already was a setback.

In 2009 the deliveries were still fast and the Kro-type slices well worth the money and time waiting. But my last order a few weeks ago was a huge disappointment. If I wanted a mediocre tasting, half cold and hardly topped pizza I could have chosen "P****a H*t" (they are not affiliated with the US chain).

The ousting of Kro is an awful thing. He is a great guy and did a lot for Beijing. It leaves a bad feeling when the Chinese side think they can dump the laowai once they outlived their usefulness. But this attitude easily translates into a certain attitude towards foreign customers in general. Eat, shup up, and pay!

Actually, some Chinese folks out there do know how to prepare a decent pizza, how to deliver good service and how to create a great place. Sadly to say, but the "owners" that run the Kro's now, clearly don't!

So to me Kro's Nest is dead. Rest in Peace!
Good luck to Kro (the real one) for whatever new endeavor he is up to.

Avoid this place....

I have to disagree with people saying the pizza is getting much worse. It's a little worse, but maybe I haven't had it regularly enough to notice a huge slide in quality. Greasy pizza is greasy pizza, no? In my opinion, it's still the best American style pizza Beijing has to offer.

However, the Chinese owner taking over has seemed to affected customer service and some food quality. The fact that he booted his friend/Western co-owner out of the partnership, that's just 100% wrong. I think Kro should have known better/not been so trusting to not be named on ownership papers, but what the Chinese guy did is inferiorating. All expats should boycott this place. Horrible.

Used to be good but decline in quality and service

Kro's used to be the place to go to whenever I wanted pizza but no longer. There has been a consistent but evident slide in quality and service. The pizza's started getting saltier and more expensive and the dough/crust is pathetic. No dipping sauces! Hot wings taste like rubber. Last few times I have ordered delivery, after a convoluted process where I had to call the main delivery number and then they relayed my order to the Gongti branch (i was scolded for directly calling the Gongti branch) it still took over 2 hours for the pizza to arrive (i live less than 300 meters away) and it arrived a cold greasy mess in the box. Hearing about the owners forcing out the foreign partner is the final straw. There are other places in Sanlitun to get pizza, I won't be supporting Kro's any more.

Quantity!

Go to Kro's if you're so hungry you could eat a small child (thx, previous comment). I do think their pizza is ok, however afterwards I often feel like I shouldn't eat that much. If you really only like thin-crust pizza this is not the place to be. They used to have 2 kegs of beer for free on Tuesday and after that 5RMB each which was a good deal, but that was a while ago.

The whole story of the chinese owner pushing out the western owner, once again shows the reliability and greediness of Chinese. (I'm sorry for generalizing, though I have seen, read, heard this in China much more often than in my own country)

Good for a one-time pizza binge

I wanted to like Kro's nest, I really did. It is close to my home (Gongti), has an authentic North American pizza joint feel, and had a friendly owner. The pizzas are HUGE and that was one of the drawing cards. But after a couple visits, you start to feel like a glutton once you are finished. The pizzas are quite good, but they just have too much dough, which ends up sitting in your stomach after a couple slices. I am a big fan of thin crust pizzas, which Kro's Nest certainly is not. If that is your thing, give it a try. If not, there are better options nearby, such as The Tree or Buona Pizza (mostly just delivery).

After all the bad PR following Kro getting pushed out bad his business partner, I don't think I will ever go back. But that is just as well since with pizzas that size, it definitely takes a toll on your waistline.

If Kro's Nest had shut up shop a year ago it would be considered a Beijing legend. When they first came on the scene the huge pizzas and quality affordable booze made it a mush do in a city that had limited western pig out spots. Sadly over the last year or so things have started to change, the pizzas are still big orbs of oily goodness but the sides are smaller and more expensive, service is awful, atmosphere has dried up and booze has become questionable.

Haven't actually been to Kro's for about 6 months. Last time we went, we asked the waitress for some ketchup, she said that we were already given some with our fries, when we said that we still needed more she said she wouldn't give it to us and yelled a little. Naturally pissed off we ask for the manager, who then proceeds to give us copious amounts of ketchup and ask in a sarcastic voice "got enough ketchup now?".

In short, there are many better places to get your pizza fix!

You call that a pizza crust?

I'm from NJ and my move to Beijing was the first time in my life I've lived more than 30 miles from New York City, so I take my pizza pretty seriously. When I first moved to Beijing I asked around as to who had the best pizza in the city, and several people told me it was Kro's Nest. I tried it my first week in town and thought it was pretty mediocre. It was like eating a loaf of bread smothered in really runny, salty sweet tomato sauce. No thanks.

Friends kept wanting to come back and they eventually added the White broccoli pizza which I enjoyed, despite feeling like I ate a small child after having a few slices. Everything else I tried there was pretty unimpressive and after the whole debacle between the owners and several reports of a slide in service and quality, I really have no interest in coming back.

A Good Filler

When you need something to fill you up The Kros Nest can certainly help you achieve your goal. Their pizzas are large, some might say oversize so order one size down, you won't be dissappointed. However the actual pizzas themselves can be light on the toppings and a little too much fluid. The onion rings are tasty and the cheese garlic bread although more like a pizza is also tasty. The service is generally good and the menu is comprehensve.

Terrible now

I'm not going to blow too much smoke up Kro's ass like some people, I never thought Kro's Nest was the BEST pizza in Beijing (I always preferred the Tree or Hutong Pizza) but this WAS clearly a lively place with good things going on, both atmosphere and food-wise.

Checked it out out of curiosity the other week following the Kro debacle we all know about. I won't be going back. Service with a snarl. Smaller portions with next to no toppings. General lack of atmosphere. Just does nothing to warrant the cost of the bill you will get at the end of the night.

Not the environment any more

Been there last week.
The vibe was missing.
The pizza too wasnt tasting the way it did. They always did great french fries ,this time even french fries were not done as before.

Many foreign+chinese partnerships ,are predictable. This was too bad.
Where is Kro?
We miss you !

Just Nasty Now

No longer the place it once was. Now its localized, pizza sauce is disgusting, toppings are few now. Service blows.

Whats next? Substituting cat and dog for the meat in the pizza? How about sichuan pepper sauce on your pizza?

This is how the Chinese say FU, Welcome.

How they say you just got F***ed - Xie Xie.

Worse and worse

As predicted this place is getting worse and worse. The lunch set has shrunk since last year. The "small" pizza really lives up to its name. I remember them filling out the plate in the past, now there's plenty of room for my side dish. Unfortunately that's been downsized too. I got a grand total of 5 fries. I asked if that was it but just got a dirty look in response.

The pizza sauce tasted different too. There was some sort of metallic taste.

Kro's no more

Kro's used to be a great place to go with a few people for some pizza and some drinks. Unfortunately the place has lost all that I used to love. The quality of the pizza has been going down hill, and the tuesday free beer deal (free beer for the first keg of tsingtao) is becoming a joke. Last time my boyfriend and I went there the place had 6 other tables, no one else drinking beer but after one free round the waitress said there was no more. When my boyfriend went down to the bar he found out that they still did have the free beer going on. This place has lost all integrity that it once had and has become a sad stereotype of the ruthlessness and uncaring on chinese business towards its customers.

Going down

Ever since Kro left this place the food quality has been gone very bad. Should not go there..

The largest pizza in beijing

Review of The Kro's Nest

Never seen a large pizza like that in beijing elsewhere! And I do like thin pizza they offer than thick ones. Make it look more meat and veg on it.
The place is full of laowai that's because of the pizza I suppose or drinks.
Like when the large pizza comes, we need to re-arrange the whole table to give room and we always grab another table to put our pizza when the people are few of course.
Comparing to other chain pizza on the street, this one is more like 'real pizza' to me,just a bit pricy.

worst delivery service ever

An hour and 40 minutes and 3 calls to the restaurant later and we finally got our cold ass pizza. No apologies, no discount. My house is a max 7 minute drive/30 minute walk/15 minute bike ride from Gongti and its a large foreign complex, not some secret hard to understand address down a hutong.

I will stick with Annie's next time, their pizzas aren't as big and exciting but they get from the phone to my door in 20 minutes with piping hot food every time. And THAT'S why they win at the restaurant awards every year.

I don't like having to microwave my delivered pizza.

Good food

After our drinks at Fubar we headed to this place for eats as few in the group were real hungry and someone
suggested this would be a economical eating place.
Yes it was .The pizzas were huge. The cheese was good. The toppings fine.
I liked the wings, the fries. The boys enjoyed too with the chilled beer.
I liked the place

Good for a large sized guy

When our group goes here the large sized guys are the ones who love this place more.
Though my personal liking is thin crust pizzas .
Here at kros nest the dough`s too thick for me and the cheese and the toppings praportions go haywire.
But still good for a change with our group as there are some who are have a great appetitie.
Yes the cheese drops out and the ingredients are just okay ,but kros nest still works for once in a while outing with our group.

Go only for pizza

This is not a good place to go when on a diet, not only because of the ridiculously oversized pies (newbies beside us were, as always, floored by the large they got) but because not much else is good on the menu. I ordered a Greek salad in an effort to keep down the carbs and got a really sad bowl of lettuce with a sprinkling of Feta, a few dots of olives and loads of the onions that I specifically requested to leave off. I should have known it was a mistake when she asked me what dressing I wanted on it: "Thousand Island? Caesar?" It was terrible. And the mozzarella cheese sticks were just as terrible - nice breading that was crunchy, nice amount of cheese, but NO FLAVOR! What a little bit of salt could have done for that. On second thought, a lot of salt!

In all fairness, this is still my husband's favorite pizza place (I prefer thinner-crust pizzas) and their fries are good.
