The Saddle Cantina
Well-priced tacos and cheap beer at the "Saddle Social" on the ground floor, with a more rounded menu of Tex-Mex classics including nachos, fajitas and lots more available upstairs. The terrace is always a hit in summer, while the huge margaritas are popular all year round. Voted "Best Mexican" in the Beijinger's 2011 Reader Restaurant Awards. Drinks are half-price all day on Cinco de Drinko, the fifth day of each month.

Quality food, good atmosphere
Went here yesterday: half price drinks were very affordable and of a good size, and they even serve chorizo and ceviche. The food is a bit more expensive than other Mexican restaurants in Beijing, but the quality matches the price. Saddle Cantina has a very authentic feel as well: would definitely recommend if you are looking for authentic Mexican.

Good Fish Tacos
The food at this place seems to have improved quite a bit in recent months, but the addition of the downstairs taco bar has been a particular success. The fish tacos are great, especially during the RMB 10 taco happy hour from 4-6pm. Even at the standard RMB 20, the tacos are well worth it. The southwestern chicken option is also pretty good. I didn't rate the beef tacos so highly - the meat seems a little dried out. Still, good food and one of the best deals on food around at the moment. Well done to the Saddle team.

Good atmosphere, average food.
Nine of us recently went to the Saddle for a meal, and it was pretty good.
In terms of food, Im sure a mexican person would not be impressed, but for us its decent. The Fajitas came out sizzling on a hot plate, and were tasty and filling. Its a shame about the 'guacamole' with included about 1% avocado, but it did provide a good game 'hunt the avocado!
The other dishes also seemed good, such as the tacos which were fried, with beef in the middle and a delicious cheese sauce on top. Also the food is fairly cheap, tacos, enchiladas etc come in around 60 rmb, and the Fajitas at 80 Rmb.
However the real selling point is the atmosphere. Its quite big with a few large tables, so a big group should fit in easily, also there's a large outside terrace which is great in the summer. Its usually lively and a good place to start a night out.
If your there for the happy hour this is sure to make you even more 'lively' as the cocktail seemed to contain just alcohol.
The staff were generally fine, but where abit slow sometimes, and hard to attract their attention, but it was quite busy at the time. Also not many of the staff seemed to speak much English, so you might struggle with a detailed order if your Chinese isn't up to scratch.
However adopt the Standard 'wo yao zhe ge' while pointing at the menu and you should be fine.

average food yet always pretty crowded
Was last here on Cinco de Mayo. Apparently inflation is affecting food portions. The salad my friend ordered is now smaller than before and the nachos are so much worse than they used to be. I recommend avoiding the nachos for now or rejecting them when you get them delivered; very disappointing.
Service seems pretty good. The staff tries to do everything promptly. However, there is an issue with the barbecue sauce. My friend opted to only have barbecue sauce and something else delivered with her salad. Only barbecue sauce came and it was a blend of Heinz ketchup with a tad bit of barbecue sauce. Any western person could tell you it tasted like ketchup. The staff claims it's barbecue sauce. Why is this place cutting the barbecue sauce with ketchup?!?!?! Who's crazy idea was that?! Had to ask three times before the waitress brought the original tub of bbq sauce out and asked if that's what my friend wanted. This is the 2nd time this has happened to my friend. Luckily, we were prepared to go through this BS.
Oh, the waitress must not have recorded a quesadilla I ordered. I don't know where the order went wrong because she definitely said the order back correctly. At least the bill didn't have the quesadilla on it.
Since food prices rose over 10%, Cantina now serves smaller portions of mediocre food. If you're desperate for hispanic food and are in Sanlitun, might as well go here.

Give me STREET FOOD over The Saddle Cantina
A food lover, I was thrilled to try out the Saddle Cantina. I was even in such a good mood up until the food came that I got over the fact the Margaritas tasted like they were from a mix and were still 50kuai...but when my food arrived, bliss ended and I was incredibly disappointed. My corn chowder was cold and tasted like water and corn meal (yuck) and my salad was so mediocre I regretted ordering it. To top this all off about an hour after leaving I had to rush home because I had FOOD POISONING. I liked to think a restaurant with such good reviews, and high prices could be trusted to wash its vegetables properly and prepare soup in a way which people don't get ill but I was incredibly wrong. Just as a warning to those going to eat here, I am not the first of my friends to get sick after the saddle, but after two times we are never going back. I have been in China over a year and can eat anything off the street, but I apparently can't stomach the Saddle Cantina.

the cantina
The place got very good athmosphere, very warm and good music not too loud, not the whole restaurant is smocking , it was bit strange because when i went there the place was not full at all but i have to smoke like one meter away from the place i was sit... but food is good even if the size of dishes is maybe too small if you are very hungry, but its good to try once...

This Saddle Chafes
If you like getting rubbed the wrong way, perhaps The Saddle is your ride.
I've been a frequent patron of this TexMexican establishment for some time and always appreciated the warm respite, excellent salsas, and jovial ambience. Being an avid fan of crustaceans and discounts, I opted for Shrimp Fajitas on their half-price night. Unfortunately, "half price" to the chef meant "half portions," and he/she sent out a generous 4 prawns. Each fajita was a wondrous game entitled Find the Solo Shrimp Within. I think I lost.
Also. Do not be bamboozled by their "Half Price Margaritas" claim. Being strict semanticists, our friends at the Saddle only apply this discount to one of their margarita drinks--the smallest size, otherwise known as "The Maria".
We ordered the Orange Creamsicle margarita in the larger, plastic, bong-shaped drinker and it arrived, sans whipped cream, sans chocolate. Here's the official recipe from their site:
"Orange Creamsicle Margarita
Margarita mix
Orange juice
Gold Tequila
Whipped Cream
Served in a frozen Marg glass with a dollop of whipped cream
and chocolate syrup dribbled over it.
A Yummy and decadent treat."
Yummy, yes. Decadent...only to those never before having sampled the more basic of orange popsicles.
When we complained about the rift between receipt and advertised discount, the manager proceeded to point to the "Maria" drink on the menu, explaining to us that the discount only applied to "Margaritas". Hm. Could have sworn a margarita referred to the drink style, not the cup size.
I'm saying "neigh" to this naughty saloon until they saddle up about prices and portions. Giddyup.

Solid drinks, nice staff
I go here with friends regularly, get drinks, have nachos and such. Its totally good for that and even the food has seen mass improvement with the new chef. I've become friends over the years with the managers and that makes it a def plus to go there as well. Highly recommended for a weekend outing or for just a chill margarita.

Outdoors and Good Microbrew
This place has chiseled out a nice open-air spot within the 3.3 complex. I haven't tried the food yet but sampled their microbrew and it gets two thumbs up. Smooth, smokey and well brewed. It led us into a discussion of beer connoisseuring. The waitstaff is fun and friendly. I'll be back for more, especially in any sort of good weather.

Good fajitas and tacos
The margarita is good. The tequilla drinks(any kind) is done well. I like fajitas specially. The chips with dips are good. I have found the waitstaff always accomodating . The service is not overbearing and let you drink or eat at your own pace. Yes when it gets crowded the service slows done but you still get your stuff done well.

cinco stars for the cinco
saddle gets a strong rating for the monthly cinco de drinko parties, what a great reason to party!
sure it is a reference to cinco de mayo, but hey that can work for any month of the year.
although they do not have patron tequila, they have many other types of tequila.
moreover they serve up a delicious serving of fajitas. i dont know if their fajitas servings are too small or if they are so delicious it never seems like it is enough. anyway, it's worth a bite.

Nice afternoon vibe and ok food
I like to come here in the afternoons - not many people, reasonable service and a good vibe. The soft shell tacos are tasty and reasonably priced. The margaritas are quite strong. I love the huge sunroof when it's open and prefer to sit there rather than on the deck, but that's just personal taste. When it gets busy the service seems to deteriorate, but otherwise my last 3 visits have all been perfectly acceptable.

saddle cantina
Good place to just chill, food is good probably not the most authentic but you're in beijing. Last time i went was couple weeks ago while the world cup was on and the outdoor seating was completely full. I was impressed with the management who tried to accommodate us, a pleasant surprise from dazed and confused Chinese staff who are normally like ummm....umm... ummm....when you make a request, complaint, say hi...

ideal place to start a Friday Sundowner
Good place to go for a drink after work or shopping. Choose your time carefully as it does get crowded. I enjoy the hustle and bustle of Friday's where the place is teeming with people.
Food is good and I have never had anything to complain of in that department.

Much improved
Service and food here were not always great, but both had improved markedly during a recent visit. The Saddle Cantina still has one of the city's best decks, so enjoy the al fresco in season. The fajitas are great, and on Monday nights, a great deal at half-price, and also a nice alternative to Blue Frog's same-night burger special. The margaritas should be better -- fresh lime instead of Rose's Lime Juice would improve them greatly. Chips and salsa are also good, with freshly fried and crispy chips. A fun place, you won't think you're in Tijuana but it probably won't matter either.

Good drinks and burritos
The chips were good, margarita was liked.
Though there was no manager to look after, everything still worked.
The waitstaff took the order, we got the drinks and food.
We were off after 1 hour and finsihed the dinner.
Cool place. Improved I guess . The FIFA has made many managements more effective?
Good going.

bad service and food
This place is terrible. I went there for a lunch special a few weeks ago (I think it was 35 kuai for a couple of dishes with sides of rice, beans and nachos) and was very disappointed.
First, the service. After seating us, the waitress pretended she had no idea what this lunch special was. When I insisted that I saw it online and would like to speak to a manager, she said that the special was only valid from Monday to Thursday. How convenient since it was a Friday. Again, I told her that I was certain the listing said it was from Monday to Friday. Finally she went back into the restaurant and came out with a lunch special menu that clearly stated it was valid M-F. When a waitress lies to her customers, it spoils a big part of the experience...obviously.
It took them almost an hour to bring out the four dishes and they messed up three of them, which we had to send back. That's a 75 percent failure rate. By that time, they were cold, bringing us to the second point: the food.
It was really bad. No flavor, no cheese and cold. I love fish tacos so that's what I ordered, but the dish was bland and almost disgusting.
All in all, if you can convince the waitress not to lie to you about the lunch special, it might be worth going there for the price. But be prepared for horrendous service and food.

No service?
Cinco de mayo.
Supposed to be half price drinks or two for one or something, not sure cause I didn't wait around long enough to find out.
Downstairs was relatively crowded, not too bad. It was more crowded the last time I was here, around opening time (One? Two years ago?)
Anyway there was a fully stocked bar downstairs and only one poor guy left to man it, one waitress was running around doing the best she could but they really needed more people down there.
Upstairs there could have been 10 people running around behind the bar like headless chickens.
Chaos.
I asked around and some people had been waiting between 30-50 mins to get served.
After about 10 mins standing at the bar I said fuck this and moved my people elsewhere.
Considering this place is already a bit of a rip off this is pretty unacceptable, I'm fine with a higher price but it's supposed to translate into better service.
Shame, great deck.
You could probably bring your own drink and just go sit out on the deck unnoticed.

Well-deserved
After living in Texas and California (i.e. Mexican food heaven) for a few years and making the occasional trip over the border, I've become pretty picky about my Mexican food. Finally got myself over to this multiple Best Mexican award winner and tried the lunch deal 36 kwai for two items. I selected the beef burrito and the fish taco. The beef burrito was spot on. The fish could've used some lime/lemon, but I didn't bother to ask. The portions were just right.
Now, it's not the best I've had...the rice and beans could've been better though decent, but definitely the best I've had in Beijing. Well-deserved Best Mex.
