The Stumble Inn

What was once a bar in a Lucky Street basement is now the Sanlitun "Village pub." It’s tempting to paint it as a rags-to-riches story, but then the original Stumble Inn was a fine little bar in itself. The elements that made Shane O’Neill’s original Stumble Inn a success are recast here across a two-story space whose large windows give the place a “bright lights, big city” feel. The pool table, dart board and flat-screen TVs are all upstairs, inviting some punters to draw comparisons with the Rickshaw. With 101 beers, a huge cocktail selection and racks of liquor, The Stumble Inn is more of a drinker’s bar than the Rickshaw was, but appeals to a similarly down-to-earth crowd of sports fans and fun-seekers as Kris Ryan’s bar did in its day. Completing the job are a terrace, menu of solid bar favorites, and Wi-Fi to capture daytime slaves to the laptop. Look out for a quiz night, happy hour and other promotions. The only problem is the Village itself - when will they stop barracading the place off at night and scaring people away?

They put the 8 in 58

I went to the Stumble Inn with my wife recently for the second and last time.

The place was not even half full and we couldn’t get served. The Irish manager seemed to be dealing with it, but mostly by scowling at the staff and eyeballing the customers.

The food menu has shrunk pretty drastically for a place I thought had a western chef? They also seem to have upped their prices by quite cleverly putting 8 on top of everything to squeeze a few extra kuai out of an already overpriced food menu. We’ll be having our 2-for-1 burgers in Blue Frog next time I find myself in the Village, thank you very much.

I will say the beer menu is pretty impressive and lots of great American brews, but it took me so long to get served I only managed to have two. It did give me plenty of time to check out their website though, which on the ‘About’ page has a comically self-involved, egomaniacal diatribe about how it is the “best bar ever”, whose founder is “the King of Beijing nightlife” and wears some sort of crown encrusted with imaginary bars.

That’s not nearly as impressive as the apparent claim that they have the only qualified food and beverage manager in Beijing. There’s a distinct possibility these guys have never been in anyone else’s bar, because I can immediately think of about 10 qualified F&B experts in Beijing (and they all know how to smile at their customers).

They top off this frenzied rant with a ‘my d**k is bigger’ joke about the size of their drinks menu. Nice.

All in all, an average bar that (despite having the biggest d**k in Beijing) isn’t worth 8 kuai of my money.

A beer bar with no beer

I came here late in the afternoon. Here is what happened:

I order a Samuel Smith's Imperial Stout. The waitress (who was in a poor mood the entire time, I must mention) said they didn't have any.
I order a Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout. They didn't have any.
I order a Samuel Smith's Pale Ale. They didn't have any.
I order an Achel White. They didn't have any.
I order an Achel Dark. They didn't have any.
I order an Orval. They didn't have any.

What a GREAT place to get a beer - oh wait, I asked for six different beers and they didn't even have ONE of them, not to mention the prices were higher than other bars.

I ended up getting some American brews, and I was surprised they had them in stock! However, I also ordered their homemade crisps, but it took about 40 minutes to get to my table because they FORGOT about them.

What a great place. I'm totally coming here again because their service is excellent and they ALWAYS have the beers on the menu in stock.

stumble during the rugby wc final

look, i love stumble, but guys, poor choice on having the band set up before the game. no one f'in cares about them during the rugby final. don't serve me a 60rmb hoegaarden in a 33cl glass and tell me it's the same as the half liter ones (corrolary to piss on my foot and tell me it's raining). also, one of your waitress actually told someone in our party, "no hugs". hilarious, but seriously? train your staff

I'll tell you this...

Drinks vs. Service

Review of The Stumble Inn

The drinks here are really great - good portions, big selection, but the service is extremely inconsistent. The foreign waitresses are usually pretty on top of things, but the Chinese waitresses are not so much. Last night, after sitting for 10 minutes without someone giving us a menu, we grabbed one for ourselves from the counter. And when the waitress walked by us a couple of times before completely disappearing, I went inside to order at the bar. Also, no one explained to us that the Happy Hour deal ONLY applied to the "classic cocktails".

I'd definitely come back here for the drinks, but the service needs to improve or it'll become too frustrating and not worth it soon.

Interesting Place

Booze - Visited numerous times and they have a good happy hour but there remains some work to be done. "Classic" cocktails are 20RMB off and are not representative of the quality I know the bartenders are capable of. If you come during the last fifteen minutes of happy hour be prepared to sit at your table and wait until 8:59 which is when the staff will come take your drink orders. Also, during the later part of HH the bartenders tend to be a little more than conservative in regards to their pours.

Mint Julep - Decent try. Way too much simple syrup and not nearly enough mint leaves.
Mai Tai - Juicy, if that helps.
Stumble Out - A pretty good drink but expect to pay extra for it - 10RMB if I remember correctly.
Long Island - No happy hour pricing!!!
Beers - Good selection, steep prices.

Food - Pretty good and pretty cheap. 45RMB for a steak and veggie pastry was a good enough deal but it's too bad they won't let you substitute fries for your chips and salad (which is made of lettuce/arugula and ZERO dressing). Perhaps I have just had the misfortune of this only happening to me but I have been a few times and this has become my norm.

Atmosphere - Can't complain here. I love the atmosphere on the deck, it keeps me coming back. Foosball is a plus.

Service - A handful of absolutely great staff that speak perfect English. Others are helpful too and will be more than willing to go ask if you have a question.

One of the better bars in Sanlitun

Review of The Stumble Inn

This place is one of the better bars in Sanlitun. The service could be a bit better but it's acceptable for the type of place it is. Extensive food menu. Items I've tried tasted pretty good but prices are on the steeper end. Place seems to have become more popular so it may be a little difficult to get a table around 10-11pm.

They are enforcing the no smoking indoors ban but you can still smoke on their upstairs patio.

For some reason, last time I was there, the manager was playing the music extremely loud. It was so loud my friends and I had to move outside to get away from the music. There's no dance floor so it's a BAR, not a club. Why is the music so loud!!? Does he think people are going to get up and dance next to their table?

Would be four stars if not for the children.

Hey, it's Sunday afternoon, after 3 p.m.

It's f-ing happy hour.

Expat adults, why don't you have the common sense not to bring your babies and small children to a BAR?

It's really embarrassing. You go to have a few pints and a laugh, and walk into a f-ing day care.

Great drinks, awesome food and polite, attentive servers. Good prices.

Screaming babies and toddlers monopolizing the foosball table? Holy f***!

Even the rooftop was no solace, a bunch of bleached blonde moms were out there with BABIES!

At a bar, during happy hour!

Get it together, children should be banned from bars.

It's not a restaurant, it's a f-ing bar.

Odd Juxtaposition

Stumble Inn is a strange blend: it's half a sports bar, with the TVs and shiny surfaces, but then it's also a beer pub, with hundred of different bottles from around the world. Get the feeling it's not quite the one thing or the other. Sports bars tend to go for volume and have good promos, but the beer (outside the Happy Hour) is fairly expensive (though standard for Sanlitun, RMB50 for a Guinness etc). Then again beer drinkers tend to favour darker, woodier places with more ales on tap, which Settle Inn doesn't have. The food is decent and there's quite a good atmosphere there, I've been by once or twice when it's been busy and it's been good craic.

Good time, Nice atmosphere

First time at The Stumble Inn and was pretty impressed. It took a little bit to find the exact location in The Village (there should be an app for The Village navigation). It was quiz night and really crowded but the staff did a pretty decent job at taking care of everyone. The food was typical for pub food and they had a nice selection of beer on the menu. Although we didn't win the pub quiz, it was a good time and a fun atmosphere. Will definitely go back when i'm in the area.

This is a cool place. Good drinks and all know great variety to choose.Like Blue frog has a variety of shots this place excels in beer choice.
I like the eats too here. Whatever I have ordered works to my taste. Before I spent a good time at Blue frog and Union Bar and grill, now some of my visits are at Stumble Inn.

Eating at the stumble inn

Review of The Stumble Inn

Have tried eating here 3 times. Food is always ok, especially if you have a craving for yorkshire puddings on a Sunday. But the service is routinely poor; food takes a long time to come, it doesn't all come at the same time so one person will have finished a meal while the other is still waiting, or food doesn't come at all. When some chicken wings failed to arrive the expat management were very friendly and made sure the dish did come and was for free...... but when the bill came the floor staff still wanted to charge us.

It's not lack of staff, there have always been more than enough, it's that they obviously have no clue what they are doing. It's a real shame because this place has potential (YORKSHIRE PUDDINGS) and training staff to an acceptable level is perfectly possible. Still, early days, so I hope things improve so I can get my sunday lunch fix more often.

Reggae in the Morning

My wife and I took the bait and stumbled in on Thanksgiving Day.

My advice is not to eat a turkey dinner in a place that plays Reggae music at 11:30 am on a Thursday. We were the only two customers in the joint but the waitress refused to turn down the music. I don't think Bob Marley liked eating turkey. He preferred eating ribs or chicken with his ganja.

As for the turkey, it was dry as a bone. It wasn't fresh, it was sliced from a loaf, as in meatloaf. I'm sure they'll reheat the loaf for Christmas turkey dinner as advertised. I'll stumble in to some other place for my bird.

Happy Thanksgiving!

BEST BAR IN THE WORLD EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to report that this place is in fact the best bar in the world ever.
I was there a few nights ago and there were some fumes from some construction work going on.
I did however manage to escape with my life hahahahaha as some others have suggested this scenario
may have been in jeopardy.
I ate a Chicken and Bacon Linguini which was spectacular and then drank my self silly receiving a bill
that didnt amount to much at all.
When I first got a whif of this smell I (being educated and of an I.Q. in double digits) simply approached the management and ASKED what was going on. My Wife demanded i stay quiet but i had had a few and thought an explanation would be entirely reasonable. and it was.
enough nonsense.
I played pool on a beautiful table and carried on drinking.
Unfortunately the only problem is that the last of my money was reserved for the baby sitter so we couldnt stay on.
LOVE LOVE LOVE THE STUMBLE INN.
BEST BAR IN THE WORLD EVER.

Recent construction work

Hi all,

Apologies to chinpokomaster05 and anyone else who's evening was in any way soured by the construction smell over the past two days.

Unfortunately, the minor work going on just outside our back door is being carried out by Sanlitun Village Management and completely out of our control. It is my understanding that they are doing some upkeep welding and spraypainting of the metal grating near the elevators.

We were not warned in advance that this work would be carried out, and so it took us by surprise, but we have been assured the work is nearing completion.

Again, apologies if this tarnished your experience with us, and we hope and look forward to welcoming you back soon.

All the best,
The Stumbles Crew

The best thing of this place is the choice one can make to choose the beer.
Absolutely amazing. Drinking same old Stellas or Guinnees is so boring specially at age second or third rate bars like lugas or paddys.
Drinking here makes you feel you can make a choice in this city and yes you can really choose from the better of the best.
Congratulations on keeping such a great choice.

The wait staff are smiling always.
The snackfood is cool . Love the jinga fries .Absolutely value for money . Whatever I have tried has been wonderful including the soups.

Finally there is a bar which is really run by professionals even the kitchen is handled by the professional Australian chef? (my guess from his pronounciation) and you can meet him and tell him few things, how you like your snack to be done . Unlike in lugas or paddys where the pubgrub is completely handled by chinese and you dont have to think hey-its a bar , and dont ask for best as eats in a bar is not supposed to serve good eats .
You dont have to compromise on eats .

I love this place.

Great place for a chilled out lunch

The Stumble Inn might be better known as a place for a few beers at night, turns out it's also a great place for a casual lunch. Great club sandwich, cool music, fast wifi and a birds eye view of the Village from the rooftop terrace all means I'll be back again.

One of the best places to be in

Review of The Stumble Inn

I loved the stumble inn before. This new version is even better.
The outside patio is real good.
The waitstaff dont bother you if you hang around with a beer for a longer time !(comparison with den where the waiters push you so hard so either you order a second one or just get out )
The food is best, though a bit pricey but I guess we need to understand it costs to hire foreign chefs! and have we respect the quality of the food.
(comparison chinese waiters doing western pub pubgrub at paddy o sheas doing burgers of which the breads can be stale or the patty may be uncooked or overcooked ) and can be bought on the roadside for less than half the price)

So finally there is a bar which is a real great bar.
Blue frog and Union Bar and grill have a good competitior.
NO one can though match the beer choices Stumble Inn offers.

A lot of work has gone behind to set up Stumble Inn and people who love drinking like me just love this place.
Yes ,the dart lovers have a ball with the quality of equipment available here.

Great beer selection, not so great food

Review of The Stumble Inn

If you're a beer drinker, there are perhaps no other places in Beijing that will delight you more. The Stumble Inn has an incredible selection of hard-to-find beers. The prices match the difficulty of obtaining the selection, though - in some cases, they're eye-poppingly expensive.

The atmosphere is also better than I expected for a place that is--let's face it--in a mall. Lots of creative and attractive Beijing-themed art throughout, with comfortable seating and both an upstairs and downstairs area.

Where The Stumble Inn falls short is food and service. After bringing us the menu and doing the typical "Chinese Hover" (where the server stands by the table eagerly insistent to take your order the second you open the menu) - to which we waved him away - it became impossible to actually place an order. Keep in mind, this was a Tuesday night and the place was almost empty. Finally, someone who I think was the floor manager (he seemed Irish) came and took our order.

My order was fairly simple, tomato soup and blue cheese fries, but the wrong kind of soup came. The server was apologetic and quickly fixed the problem. The blue cheese fries were expensive and I found the sauce to be too soupy and watery - maybe this is the way they should be, though. Obviously this isn't a dish popular in the US, but I wouldn't order it again. The tomato soup was excellent, but oh so very expensive. 80 kuai for soup and French fries, without a beer even being part of the equation. For the price, I'd at least expect generous portions--how much more could it cost for a big bowl of soup instead of a disappointingly skimpy dish?

Would I return? Definitely, if I was in a mood for a hard-to-find beer. I'd eat somewhere else first, though.
