Interesting Art, Ace Giftshop

Review of Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA)

It's a nice space, and some of the exhibits here are amazing, others ho-hum, but I'll cop to it -- I have largely pedestrian tastes, and at the end of the day, I want to be able to buy a cute bag or a trendy mug to accessorize my day of art viewing. This is where the UCCA comes up aces -- it has a huge gift shop with a variety of cute, and not too pricey, items on offer. Smaller but on par with gift shops such as the one in Tate Modern back in Blighty.

The restaurant is also fab. I dig the slightly Bond-villian-lair retro look, and the salmon pizza is delish.

At the heart of the art

It's no secret that 798 rents have been rising and pushing out the original artists/galleries in place of parking lots as it steadily Disney-fies but the addition of the UCCA in late 2007 was a major step in the right direction.

The UCCA's direction is non-profit and education focused.

In total they have approx 100 staff which includes massive Education and Events departments. As well as the big name exhibitions they are also constantly organizing and running loads of cool events including live music, films, lectures etc.

They truly seem to have the interests of the contemporary Chinese art community at heart.
I am a UCCA member so I get direct, first-hand info sent to me plus free entry to all of their programs. I'd encourage everyone to join.

A Rarity in Beijing's Art World

Ullens is a rarity in Beijing's art world - a not-for-profit gallery that functions more like a publicly funded museum-style institution. As such, it's one of the key places that has stopped 798 degenerating into an out-and-out commercial shopping zone.

Having said that, in recent times the exhibitions here have been of variable quality. The "Breaking Forecast" group show they had a few months back, supposedly including the most cutting edge artists in China, was a major disappointment. They have had some excellent exhibitions in the past, however, so hopefully this is just a glitch.

Ullens is only partly an exhibition space - they also have an extensive program of talks and screenings. Many of the lectures are in Chinese, and not being a proficient Mandarin speaker I haven't been along to any of them. I regularly attend their screenings though, which are great. Most films are subtitled in English, and the Ullens website generally specifies if works are in Chinese only. They show a broad range of material including some major retrospectives of local and international directors.

The last thing Ullens has to recommend it is its architecture - the gallery is housed in one of the best preserved Bauhaus factory spaces in the 798 complex, with many classic features of the style apparent in the interior.

If you're visiting 798 Ullens is definitely one of the spaces worth checking out in an area that these days has a lot of very mediocre galleries.
