Wutengzhai Restaurant and Bar 无腾斎

Specializing in Hunan Cuisine, Wutengzhai is a small, hidden gem in Qilinbei hutong. With Lonely Planet travel books and other magazines strewn across their bookshelves, the restaurant has an eclectic but pleasant atmosphere. Wutengzhai earned five stars on dianping.com, in which reviewers recommend the sour ginger fish (紫姜鱼), a Hunan specialty. Another dish that comes highly recommended is the paper pot fried string beans (干煸四季豆).

Fantastic Hunan food!

I've been to this little gem a couple of times now and have come away impressed every time. Tucked up a very unassuming hutong at the western end of the same block that holds Yugong Yishan, this refurbished courtyard home has a cosy, homely feel that's only reinforced by the friendly, nicely low-key service.

The third time I went here with my partner, the owner recognised us and even gave us a discount for being "old customers" - a very pleasant change from the usual blank stares you get from brain-dead fuwuyuan in many Beijing restaurants.

I recommend the fish dish mentioned in the directory description above, and also the crispy toufu. Tebie hao chi!!!

One word of caution - although delicious, the food here is quite spicy and oily, so it's probably not a great place if you have a weak stomach.

The restaurant is hard to spot from the main street. If you're at Yugong Yishan, head west down Zhangzizong Lu - the restaurant is in the second hutong on your right. The hutong looks suspiciously empty, as Wutengzhai is the only business here, but walk to the end and on the left you'll spot a little sign and a shiny red door. Head inside for a very reasonably priced, tasty meal cooked in the style of Mao's home province.
