Xinjiang Red Rose 新疆红玫瑰餐厅

Beijing’s most famous Xinjiang restaurant serves some of the best lamb skewers around matched by enormous servings of dishes like dapan ji (a chicken, potato and pepper stew), latiaozi (noodles with a spicy tomato sauce) and baked flatbread (nang). Nightly performances (starting at 7.40pm) feature live music and belly dancers with snakes – you might find yourself dragged onto the stage to join in. Voted "Best Xinjiang" in the Beijinger’s 2010 Restaurant Awards.

Two Different Experiences

Review of Xinjiang Red Rose
2

Happened to go to this place twice in three weeks with two very different experiences. I would consider myself a big fan of XinJiang food and was pleased with my first visit (small group, outdoors and no show). The food on this visit was on par with some of the better XinJiang restaurants I've visited in the city. I particularly enjoyed the DaPanJi and some of the cold dishes (cucumber, peanuts, etc). None of this is particularly "difficult" cuisine to pull off but based on the dinner I considered the restaurant a solid choice in the GongTi area.

That experience however was sadly forgotten based on the second dinner. This dinner (12 person group, indoors, during the show) made me think otherwise. First the food came out FAST, as in minutes after ordering. I did not consider this a positive as the quality of the dishes were significantly lower than the first visit. I seriously wondered whether everything was pre-made and sitting there for who knows how long... Spices were generally off, bread either barely toasted or burnt beyond recognition. Just as far from the first visit as possible in terms of quality. Even the DingDing ChaoMian, a dish that probably is as basic as it comes in these restaurants, tasted "off".

With these two very different reviews I think the decision of whether to eat here would depend on whether you're interested in paying a premium for at best solid XinJiang food and a show over going to another more consistent restaurant with lower costs (especially in terms of beer/wine).

Atikins diet heaven...

I think the other reviewers have summed this place up nicely, both the good and bad reviews can be accurate here. It probably depends on what state of mind you're in before you arrive and what you expect to get from the experience.

Not for a romantic night out, not recommended for non-smokers but few places in China are going to get that tick. Highly recommended for those on the Aitkens diets, large delicious skewers of meat, esp the lamb and chicken.

The band and dancers were outstanding the night we went, the snake lady dance was especially entertaining. So for a crowd on the lash, looking for a smoke filled night of fun, rubbing shoulders with a melting pot of locals, visitors and vodka swillers, then this place is hard to beat.

Top tip - book, or arrive before 7pm to get a table. By 7.30 the place is packed.

Not What Was Expected

We went to the restaurant with a large group, celebrating a goodbye dinner.
We expected a belly show dance, but I guess we went a night they didn't have it going on.
For the Chinese atmosphere and menu, the food was overpriced and not very good.
On top of it, a whole group of people drinking beer thinking it was going to be cheap (since it was yanjing) turned into 600rmb on alcohol alone, which did not make us happy in the end.
I would NOT recommend eating here. "Best Xinjiang," I saw nothing special about the food and certainly have had better elsewhere.

Awesome Food

Awesome food, great atmosphere, the belly dancers are hot! Musicians are not bad either. Prices are reasonable, lamb skewers are prob one of the best in Beijing.

Highly Recommended!

For the people who complained that they couldnt talk during the performances, well what do you expect with a live show?

Like really loud belly dance performances? Go here

Like really loud belly dance performances? Go here. Don't go here if you expect to hold a conversation with your dining partners.

Old Classic..

This place is a mainstay of the gongti area. As the years pass, it remains the same, firmly rooted in its little alley with a crowd of locals, russians and middle eastern folks munching on kebabs, smoking a chicha and downing vodka by the bottle.
The food is nothing out of this world but it's consistently good and foreigner friendly

oh right, i almost forgot ;-) they got belly dancers and what a show it is. The lovely ladies stroll around the room teasing diners and dragging them on stage every so often much to the delight of their companions for a little rattle and shake.
