Dating back to 1922, this time-honored (Laozihao) Buddhist vegetarian restaurant is perhaps the most well known of its kind in the city. Located in an ornate, temple-like venue in Qianmen, the flagship store of what has now become a successful franchise still abides by its basic Buddhist philosophy: harmony through taste and environment. All dishes are 100% meat free and some are made to resemble meat (i.e. "pork" balls, bbq "lamb" kebabs with cumin, and black pepper steak - heijiao niupai). Other standouts include shiba luohan and gongde doufu. The restaurant also claims to not use any shallots, ginger, garlic, leeks or lotus - although that rule appears to be consistently broken in the mock-meat dishes. Gongdelin is well suited as a slightly offbeat place to treat out of town guests.
