Dating back to just 1992, and looming over the Third Ring Road, the CCTV Tower is Beijing’s tallest structure at 387m. It will always lack the cachet of its “underpants” little brother, the Rem Koolhaas-designed CCTV Headquarters (pXXX), but its eerie similarity to other TV towers that grace ex-Soviet bloc capitals like Vilnius, Moscow, Prague and East Berlin – but also Toronto and Seattle – is endearing in a homely, retro way.
The global TV tower mania of the 1960s and 70s is somethign to ponder during the swift
elevator ride, unless you prefer to be serenaded by the memorized commentary rattled off by the elegantly dressed elevator ladies. At the top floor is the open-air observation deck (238m), where you’ll enjoy stunning views of Beijing or, on some days, a bird’s eye of smog. Fear not if the visibility ends at the Fourth Ring Road during your visit – helpful photos are on hand to show you what the view “should” look like on a clear day.
Below the observation deck is the inevitable revolving restaurant (RMB 168/298 for lunch/
dinner), as well as exhibits detailing the history of CCTV. (Anecdotal evidence suggests that food tastes better when you’re revolving). For an additional fee, you can sit in a mock broadcast studio, flash your pearly whites, and do your best impression of CCTV 9 anchors.
