Nestled inside the new 1949-The Hidden City complex, this rustic-chic Mediterranean taverna offers respite from the noise and bustle of Sanlitun. For a flavorful burst, try some olive foccaccia (RMB 18) dipped in a dish of tiger prawns in chili garlic butter (RMB 228). The prawns were better than the slightly bland garlic and coriander razor clams (RMB 58). The made-to-share entrees of salmon steak with tomato-basil salsa (RMB 98) and beef sirloin with béarnaise sauce (RMB 188) were nothing memorable, but the baby back pork ribs in a barbeque glaze (RMB 188) were finger – or at least fork – lickin’ good. The dessert sampler (RMB 56), including tarts, cheesecake, and mousse, was sweet and delicate. Though the wine list is exhaustive and well-matched to the meal, expect a small pour (glasses range from RMB 50-138). Even if 1/5’s flavors are a fraction underwhelming, its presentation and ambiance alone guarantee this city won’t be hidden for long.
