The owners of 2 Kolegas pledged to make it the place to hear live underground music. Enjoy cheap beer, chuan'r and real grass (gasp) in the small courtyard. Spread out, watch fire dancers, and soak in the Rebel Without a Cause atmosphere in the neon glow of the nearby drive-in theater. Bars & Clubs

Sitting at one of the tables scattered outside the entrance of 2 Kolegas, Beijing's newest punk bar, it was time for another round. When a friend ordered a Tsingtao, the waiter (one of the friendlier punk rock service employees) suggested a similarly priced (RMB 10) Beijing Beer instead: as he explained it, it was geng ku (cooler). Non punk rockers, keep this in mind when you visit, it might just help you fit in: most patrons of 2 Kolegas are real Beijing punks, or at least foreigners producing documentaries about Beijing punks. The outdoor tables (the bar is located in a spacious and grassy corner of the Chaoyang Drive-in Theater) provide a comfortable location to drink beer and eat rouchuan'r while listening to the show going on just inside. The outdoor seating is extremely popular with punks, allowing a first-hand look at one of Beijing's more spectacular sub-cultures. Jul 05
