Finally, a restaurant with sufficient sass and class to match that special dinner companion you’ve been hoping to impress for so long. Cepe’s sophisticated, low-key atmosphere is enough to put anyone in the mood for an intimate tete a tete. Those in need of a conversation starter need only look as far as restaurant manager Lorenzo, fresh from New York’s Le Cirque, with his easy flow of anecdotes. The food, however, will halt all chitchat. Roasted portobello mushrooms (RMB 140), fresh from the restaurant’s own humidor, are gloriously rich in flavor, perfectly complemented by stuffings of eggplant, ricotta cheese and sautéed prawns. The tender ravioli (RMB 130) is bursting with prosciutto and smoked scamorza while the pan-fried sea bass (RMB 220) is evenly, delicately cooked, and served on asparagus and spring onion. To top it all off, treat your date to the luxurious warm chocolate pudding (RMB 80) served with aromatic lavender ice cream and you’ll both discover taste buds you never knew you had. Zoe Li Dec 06
