Xu Xi 許素細 is the author of ten books of fiction & essays, most recently a new novel, That Man In Our Lives ( Available at The Bookworm).

To be a writer, you must in the first place write. And then you must read your own work as a writer does, with a critical eye for editing and revision to make it the best piece of writing you possibly can. In this workshop, you will learn to read your own writing with that kind of eye, by focusing on word choices, sentences and paragraphs of your own work and those of others in the group. This workshop will provide you with writing craft tools to think about your own work the way a writer needs to, and to help you consider how you might continue or revise your work in progress for eventual completion.

Each participant must submit a piece of no more than 250 words that is the opening paragraph of a NEW story or essay or book that you are writing or wish to write. Please don’t send me something you’ve already completed or published because that entirely defeats the purpose of workshop, which is to look at work in progress. You need to send this by no later than Sunday September 18 (one week before the workshop). We will read excerpts of everyone’s work anonymously and discuss its merits and how it might be improved.

So dust off those drafts, turn on those computers and craft up to 250 words that you’ll email to xuxi@xuxiwriter.com as either a WORD attachment or in the text of your email. And we’ll all meet on Sunday September 25 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

If you have any questions, suggestions or comments please email info@chinabookworm.com
