童梦失魂夜

La cité des enfants perdus/The City of Lost Children

(dir. Marc Caro & Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 1995) 8pm

France | Germany | Spain | 112 min

From the makers of Amelie and in the same dreamy visual style, this French film is a fable of child exploitation which has its roots in tales of child catchers and bogeymen. Transplanted to a fantasy world of science fiction scenarios, the child catcher is a mad scientist who cannot dream, so kidnaps children and steals their dreams to provide the inspiration he desperately seeks. Cue a rescue mission comprised of a circus man and a very determined orphan girl and you have a cracking adventure story to boot!

7月20日 星期三 晚8点 Wednesday 20th July 8PM

潘神的迷宫

El laberinto del fauno/ Pan's Labyrinth

(dir. Guillermo del Toro, 2006) 8pm

Spain | 119 min

A macabre fairytale, Pan’s Labyrinth has been noted for its similarity to the tale of the Little Match Girl (who, dreaming of an imaginary world where there is no poverty or suffering, slowly freezes to death during a particularly harsh winter). The harsh reality in Pan’s Labyrinth is the reign of Franco, when government forces committed unspeakable atrocities – and it’s no wonder a little girl would create a fantasy world where she can live happily. However, it’s when one world bleeds into another that the story gets really disturbing. Amazing animatronics, gorgeous sets and ethereal photography really bring this fairytale to life.

Korean dark-fairytale double bill!

蔷花,红莲

장화, 홍련/A Tale of Two Sisters

(dir. Kim Jee-Woon, 2003)

South Korea | 115 min

Adapted from a Korean folktale about an evil stepmother who drives two sisters to suicide, this psychological horror film focuses on the odd behaviour of two sisters who have recently been released from a mental institution and are seemingly persecuted by their new stepmother. The evil stepmother is such a standard figure in traditional fairytales, but this film gives the trope a shocking twist by including issues of mental illness and modern notions of repression and trauma not explicitly dealt with in traditional stories. Very creepy.

7月23日 星期六 晚10点 Saturday 23rd July 10PM

韩塞尔与葛雷特

헨젤과 그레텔/Hansel and Gretel

(dir. Yim Pil-Sung, 2007)

South Korea | 117 min

An incredibly weird re-telling of the traditional Grimms fairytale, this Korean Hansel and Gretel reverses the roles. Instead of a malevolent adult enticing children into a gingerbread cottage, instead it is the children who entice an adult to their horrendously kitsch little house in the woods, where they can eat cakes and candy and play all day. It all sounds quite idyllic until it’s made quite clear that there is no escape. With high production values, fantastic set design and excellent photography, this nightmare is a pleasure to watch, even though the story may not be entirely consistent in places.

7月24日 星期日 晚8点 Sunday 24th July 8PM

公主新娘 The Princess Bride

(dir. Rob Reiner, 1987)

United States | 98 min

An original fairytale, written in the face of a culture which deemed fairytales to be outdated and uncool, this film is very witty, a bit silly and very enjoyable, earning it cult classic status. Taking elements from plenty of well-known stories, there is a hero on a quest, a damsel in distress, some wily bandits, a man bent on revenge, an evil prince and lots of pirates. If you haven’t seen it, you’ll have heard it quoted, and if you have seen it, it’s the type of film you’ll want to watch again!
