Are you looking for a new hobby, have you always wanted to learn how to play chess, or are you interested in honing your chess-playing skills? Well, look no further! OPOPO Magazine is proud to feature BJ Chess Culture, a collective of chess players in Beijing who regularly come together for learning, teaching, and fun!
Please meet Nayyir S., the principal founding member and facilitator of Beijing Chess Culture:
How long have you been playing chess?
I’ve been playing chess for about a year now, but I play regularly and consider myself more than just a casual player.
What was your motivation for starting a chess club here in China?
Back in the US, I was quite active in a local chess club. We met regularly and it was great for being challenged and learning new skills. When I moved to Beijing back in October 2016, I wanted to keep up the habit. While training for my new job, I just happened to meet two other gentlemen who shared my enjoyment and enthusiasm of playing chess; Kenneth from Lexington, Kentucky, USA and Richard of Leeds, UK. We decided to create this collective so that we could have an opportunity to spread chess culture and give ourselves more chances to play together.
Is BJ Chess Culture only open to expert chess players?
No! The collective is open to anyone interested in playing chess. Whether you’re an expert, a novice, or have never played a single game in your entire life, all are welcome! Our group is composed of enthusiasts, players, and supporters from all over the world.
