Huang Zhou (1925-1997) lived through some of the most turbulent periods of Chinese history. He was a member of the People’s Liberation Army, which deeply impacted his art, and at various times in history has been regarded as an insider and an outsider in the art world. His art was deeply influenced by his political beliefs, and he is regarded as being one of the most important artists of the post-war period.
