Hike: Changyucheng ‘Long Valley City’ day trip

On this trip we’ll explore the village of Changyucheng, looking at old shrines, defensive walls, and a temple with a big old tree, before taking a good long walk up a long valley to a tablet that marks the border of Beijing Municipality and Hebei Province. We usually make this village a start or finish point for several of our tough Great Wall hikes in the same area—this trip is a good chance to see some of the same great scenery without making your legs so tired! We follow mountain roads on the way to this hike. If the roads are closed, we’ll switch the trip to one that is closer to the city.

This hike costs 350 RMB (315 RMB for members, 200 RMB for children under the age of 12). Please use the booking form on our website to reserve your place on the bus and to find out about the time and place of departure. Reservations are essential. The cost includes transportation, guides, water, snacks, and a late lunch after the hike.

Weekend Cooking Classes at The Hutong

In The Hutong Kitchen, every weekend we teach a variety of cuisines from within and beyond China’s borders. We always focus on fresh, local, seasonal ingredients and on making tasty, wholesome meals from scratch. We believe it’s important to eat according to the seasons, just like once upon a time – just like nature intended. We also believe that each dish has a history and its own character – that it tells a story and acts as a window into its own indigenous culture. We invite you into our Hutong Kitchen to unwind, have a great time, and learn more about than just another cuisine.

ZHAN WANG: MY PERSONAL UNIVERSE

This November, UCCA welcomes a highly-anticipated sculpture and video installation from Beijing's revered sculptor Zhan Wang.

Zhan Wang has displayed his series of stainless-steel rock casts at an impressive resume of venues, even hauling one to the top of Mt. Everest. For his exhibit My Personal Universe at UCCA, Zhan Wang began the extensive production process for the project by exploding a gigantic boulder in the mountains of Shandong Province while recording the event on hi-definition video from six different angles at 2000 frames per second. In post-production, he extended the millisecond of the explosion from all six angles into three-minute clips. The six HD footages will be projected onto giant screens in the UCCA Big Hall, making the path of each floating rock fragment stunningly clear from each angle. Suspended throughout the exhibition space are over 5000 stainless-steel replicas of the stone fragments from the blast: their gleaming surfaces reflect the footage of the explosion into infinity, thus creating an endless abyss reminiscent of the birth of the universe.

Photos exhibition: Freb - French photographer in Beijing !

Frédéric, French photographer, was born in an artistic universe with his mother being a painter, he realized his first photos at the age of 11. Self-taught, Frédéric began to create his universe, being widely inspired by the world of painting to which he remains closely connected.

Frédéric travels to an enormous extent, he photographs places and incredible characters that he has the opportunity to visit or to meet throughout the world. He refines his style due to a perpetual desire to ever-improve.

Today, in spite of a trump card represented by digital technology and computing tools, Frédéric refrains to either optimize or retouch his images. He devotes his work within photographic tradition and reproduces highly technical and aesthetic effects manually.

Frédéric uniquely employs digital formats, without further treatments nor retouching. Very opaque, his photos are realized with poetry, with tenderness and a Zen spirit.

Opening: Friday January 6th, 3pm to 7pm.

Examining Objects – Song Yuanyuan Solo Exhibition

Platform China is excited to present “Examining Objects”, a solo exhibition of new works by Song Yuanyuan.

In a departure from his experimentation with non-traditional canvas stretching and framing techniques, Song Yuanyuan continues to examine objects within the confines of a traditional oil painting format. Depicted in spaces awkwardly ambiguous whether they are in the process of construction or destruction, there is a certain discord between the objects that challenges the viewer to reconsider a multitude of relationships: the relationships between the objects, the objects and the painting, the objects and the viewer, and the viewer and the painting. The idea the object is broken down, disregarded, and newly approached with no preconceived notions about what an object is or what it should be, extending the examination to concepts of space, people, existence through implication, and the painting themselves. The artist’s use of text in some of the works, appearing sometimes as blunt statements of what the objects are, sometimes as a more personal commentary, exists in a an obscure space between providing insight and disrupting the viewer’s perception of the work.

Splendid with no regrets

Still coping with the mutations experienced by the modern urban landscapes, once more Fortunée Noël’s new works depict a frenetic Beijing juggling with cinder blocks and girders.
The concept of transparency was central in her earliest works produced in China. Noël’s representation of unaccomplished skyscrapers and their thousand reflections were a testimony of the increasing use of transparent materials in modern architecture - a true revolution in a city like Beijing where opacity means a lot.

The new set of works proposed at the Babu Space gallery mainly tries to recreate the energy inherent to this aesthetic transformation guided by desire as well as necessity. Consequences are no pretext for interrogation this time. The artist doesn’t feed reproaches neither raises uncertainties. In her new urban landscapes Noel proposes the perspectives of modern towers which definitely grabbed the horizon of the Chinese capital.

Bullfighting from behind the barrier (Toros desde la barrera)

Bullfighting from behind the barrier is aimed at inviting visitors to think about the diversity of aesthetic and ethical points of view that arise in contemporary societies when it comes to the art of bullfighting. The works of art that will be displayed are all diverse in their approach to bullfighting. This diversity is in fact what shows the complexity of this topic and at the same time encourages the local audience to increase their interest and knowledge on one of the more well-known clichés of Spanish Culture. The art works consist of photographs from Cristóbal Hara, Fernando Herráez, Cristina García Rodero, Isabel Muñoz, Ramón Masats y Ramón Zabalza; and the work of the video-artist María Cañas.
