I tried Kiosk recently - okay burger (the chips, on the other hand, were very tasty); Grandma's and Steak and Eggs - ho-hum burgers; John Bull Pub - a bit dry...
Another contender for the best burgers and other American food (including some good salads and other healthy options, which are hard to find in BJ) is the American Cafe, by the Blue Castle apartments.
Have tried the Den burger - with a fried egg on top - it wasn't too bad, but not special enough to make me go all the way there when I get a hungering for a burger... still searching...
almost embarrassed to admit it, but Hard Rock Cafe serves up a righteous burger. Sure you have to put up with all the american tourists and chinese hookers, but it's worth it.
Might try Grandma's ... when it first opened had a chat with Grandma herself who noted the secret of making good burgers... according to her, the cattle here are a bit lean, so she adds fat to the ground beef to make it juicier ... having said that, she's no longer slinging hash out back so I'm not sure they're still doing the burgers that way.
How about Sizzler? It's fast food, but hey, they might know a thing or two about meat.
almost embarrassed to admit it, but Hard Rock Cafe serves up a righteous burger. Sure you have to put up with all the american tourists and chinese hookers, but it's worth it.
They also have a really nice veggie burger.
I had a cheeseburger there - it was passable, but the price was insanely expensive. Service was good. Lots of loud, stereotypical Americans. (What are the odds?) Probably won't go back.
I tried a few times, but I must have bad luck. I've never had a good hamburger in China, unless I just stay home and make it myself. All of the ingredients are here; the problem is that the natives don't quite understand the concept of a good hamburger. You just let it fry by itself, without poking at it a flipping it over a dozen time. Hamburgers aren't meant to be stir-fried.
However, China has the best French fries I've ever had. Find a Sichuan restaurant that has 'Gan Bian Tu Dou Tiao'. Deep-fried potato strips that are then stir-fried with spices and green onions and garlic. I just gotta remember to tell them to leave the numbing little Hua Jiao's out of it!
And feel free to take a bottle of ketchup with you. They won't have any there, and the staff will think you're nuts, but it's excellent. There are two restaurants near my school that I go to so often that the staff know me and they let me keep my ketchup bottles in their refrigerators, so I don't have to carry them around with me. THAT'S service!
Gotta say that the burgers at American Cafe were good before, but now with the help of the new foreign chef...WOW they were fantastic and very authentic. I think the Chef was a Canadian. Try em out! :!:
Its under the evolution gym in Blue castle, behind sunshine 100. I haven't back for a month but I know the food has improved since June(alot of my friends from Blue castle use to go there). Check it out.
I am a frequent customer of American cafe. While I realize improvement in the quality of food in the past few months, especially their burger, salad and pizza, I don't see any foreign chef working there..... unless he is humbly hiding or is only a part time.
i had seen a caucasian guy working there .... white, speaks good English (no weird accent), probably North American. American Cafe is an under-rated restaurant with decent food; but service is kinda slow there though.
... not related to the hamburger post, but has anyone noticed that South Beauty now has a French waiter on staff? I take it the French know a thing or two about service.
I don't know where 'admin' comes from, but the French are the worst if it comes to service. In Europe they are famous for their 'I don't look at you when I serve you because that is not cool' attitude.
But that's not what this forum is about! I had a burger at Zing yesterday and it was awsome! Normally I'm not a big burger eater, but I just fancied one yesterday and I didn't regret one second. It's a huge burger with the standard toppings as tomato, lettuce, pickles and ketchup and you can choose two additional toppings as cheese, bacon, a fried egg or mushrooms (if you pay more you can get them all if you want!). Nice french fries on the side..... it made my day!!! And this all with good lounge music on the background..... they will see me again there.
club football's double patty cheeseburgers are hot. Fries are no good though. Also have doube patty chicken burgers and one time we got a one patty chicken one patty beef burger by accident. Good stuff.
I'm actually partial to the bacon cheese burger at the Goose & Duck. The one at Joe's bar actually tastes a bit better, but the size is so tiny that you end up having to eat 2 of them to make up the one at the goose. And at rmb49 at Joe's (not counting cheese & bacon) vs rmb35 at the Goose (including cheese & bacon) I'd still rather have it at the Goose.
Is that a foot in your mouth or are you just glad to see me?

I've had that burger. It's the most horrible thing I've ever tasted after pointed to the letters B-U-R-G-E-R on a menu. It does not deserved to be called as such. Freeze-dried-beef-patty is it's due name.
Try Mr. Lee's USA cafe, iits about 100 m north of the East exit of the Silk Market. On same road as the Blue Marine and Mexican Wave bars but other side of the road and about 50 m North. Excellent burgers, good price.
Mr Lee is Chinese but lived many years in Huston, plays US recorded radio station music.
went for a burger at Eudora Station yesterday -- as much as I wanted to hate the place (they royally screwed us on breakfast during our that's Beijing ski trip in December), I thought the burger was excellent. RMB 35 gets you a decent burger, fries and some cole slaw -- nice touch was that they don't charge extra if you want cheese on it.
Can't vouch for the other food but if its a burger you are after and you're in the Lido area, get the cheeseburger. Hell, it's not even that more expensive than a trip to Mickey D's ...

I’d definitely be interested in feedback on this one.
At some point, China mastered the art of the french fry. Good fries are easy to find.

Thanks for a great post!
I'll try those fries and if I can find a decent burger, I'll bring it along with the ketchup.

Holy cow, something nice to say about Zing! Can anyone corroborate this?
BTW I like my burgers flat ... ie no taller than my jaws can open, so as to make taking a bite possible without wreakign havoc on the whole assembly
