Chinese-Style Divorce
Just started watching the mini-series "Chinese Style Divorce" -- really quite good. Guess I'm a bit behind the times in catching this as it was apparently all the rage a while back.
No English subtitles but dialogue is understandable even if your Chinese isn't all that great.
Interested to hear others' opinions on this series ...

I'm on like episode 13 now and damn it's good.
It has it's cheesy moments and improbably plot twists (like why the hell the main character can't just fess up to his wife that yes, he was drooling all over their divorced neighbor at his best friend's wedding), but overall quite good acting and very believable.
I find the repetitive nature of the long plot (fight, make up, fight, make up, fight ...) makes it easy for a non-native speaker of Mandarin to understand.
Extra bonus: filmed in Qingdao, which is quite beautiful.

Re: Chinese-Style Divorce
Just want to recommend the other one.
I'm wondering if non-Chinese-spoken audience like the very popular TV series Dazhaimen'r (The Gate of Reign), a story on a Bejing medicine family--the founder of Tongrentang(同仁堂). I think the plot and the language are good. The lines have very authentic Beijing flavor and actors play very well. Even directors Zhang Yimou, Tian Zhuangzhuang,Jiang Wen and Chen Kaige star in.
There are PartI and Part II. Now there are still many TV channels playing it. As I ate Yangrouchuan'r in small Hutongs, vendors are all sitting outside watching it. It's easy to understand and practise your Beijinghua.
I highly recommend this TV series.

Re: Chinese-Style Divorce
Just finished watching "Chinese Style Divorce" -- all 23 episodes -- and though the final wrap-up episode was a little disappointing, overall I'd have to say this was a brilliant series. The haunting soundtrack, arthouse cinematograpy and striking sets (all shot in Qingdao I believe) all framed a wonderful, realistic plot.
As a foreigner what I really enjoyed about it was the fact that even over 23 episodes there were really only five or six characters you needed to keep track of, and the dialogue was contemporary, unaccented and relatively simple. This makes it different from the typical historical dramas that litter the airwaves in China -- those that
(a) feature just enough classical Chinese dialogue to confuse the second-language learner;
(b) have far too many characters to keep track of
(c) require some knowledge of imperial China to understand the historical context of what's going on.
Does anyone know of any series similar to "Chinese Style Divorce" that are set in contemporary Beijing?

Re: Chinese-Style Divorce
These two are good, set in contemporary Beijing
One is Pinzui Zhangdamin de Xingfushenghuo (Garrulous Zhangdamin's happy life), it's about a Beijing local man's life in Beijing. The diolague and plot are closed to daily life. It's also humorous.
The other one is Zuilangman de shi (The most romantic thing), which is about three sisters and their mother's love story in contemporary Beijing. This one is my favorite.
The two are both family-themed stories that are favored by Beijing Laobaixing.
