That street behind the Friendship Store... where can I get decent food. Seems every time I go there I end up at Paul's or Grandma's and I"m thinking I should spread my wings a bit. Any recommendations?
I know that there is a decent Thai place around the eastern corner by the Starbucks. I think it’s called lemongrass. They have an extensive lunch buffet as well. I also enjoy going to Gold Lake once in blue moon. I have heard that the entire block will be gone soon to make room for a new hotel going in. Better eat quickly!

Not too fond of their mainb courses, but I like Sizzler's all-you-can-eat salad bar. It's not exactly expansive, but it's decent, with veggies as well as passable soup (three selections) and fruit.
Gold lake is a comfortably decorated Cantonese restaurant with a very extensive menu. Although the food is “fast food” they serve a lot of traditional dishes. Decent BBQ pork and good noodles, but I usually find that the sauces they use are watered down. It’s located in the same block of Le Jazz and I think that the Sizzler is also there. Gold lake also has a location in Guo Mao and in Full Link beside Party World.

on the street you were ACTUALLY asking about.. behind friendship store you should go to makame (maybe spelled wrong) it is tibetan and FANTASTIC. make a reservation though but it is a fantastic place to take guests.. great dinner show, good food and cool tibetan staff. everyone will get up and dance in a circle aound the cozy room at one point in the night. great decoration... have the roasted mushrooms..

Is it available for lunch, dinner or both?
Both. 42 kuai. They'll try to get you to buy drinks and a main course but you can resist. They'll give you ice water if you ask (at least they did when I went)
What about that place above Grandma's? I've heard music coming out of there, but since I had already been seated, and was waiting a customary hour before getting my food, at Grandma's, it was too late to change...
Grandma's was decent, for the type of food served, in the beginning, but since G'ma was kicked out, or so I heard, it has really gone downhill. I heard that the former chef at G'ma's has opened a Tex-Mex restaurant beside the St. Regis and behind Sizzler. Heeard it was really good.

Not sure if he was a chef at Grandma's, but a Chinese guy named Peter opened Peter's Tex-Mex first in Chengdu, then expanded to Beijing last Feb/March. Grandma did train him how to make everything, so there is a strong connection between the 2 places. They have a menu very similar to Grandma's, they've just added Tex-Mex to the menu.
A few of the waitstaff at Peter's used to work at Grandma's.
I give it 2 thumbs up, and we Texans are picky about our Tex-Mex! It's definitely better than any other Tex-Mex place in town.

What kind of food do they have at Gold Lake?

Here's a story about Grandma's and Peter's in Chengdu (although the writing is a bit over the top):

I've haven't been there for quite a while, but Istanbul was always pretty good. I read they have a new chef. Anyone been there recently?
