Vodka at Centro

A few months ago I ordered my usualy vodka tonic at Centro. The first couple were ok but the third one tasted a bit funny. I had been drinking befroe I arrived so I didn't think that much of it.

Last Thursday I went to Centro and again ordered a vodka tonic. The first two were ok. My friend ordered me a third and it tasted a bit off. I took my drink back and had them make another. That too tasted funny. So I asked to sample the bottle to try and narrow down the source of the odd taste. It was definitley the bottle. They handed me a new bottle of Stoli to open and that one tasted off as well. The vodka had smelled vaguely like tequilla and had a peppery taste with a tequilla after taste. Has anyone else experienced this at Centro or anywhere else in Beijing? Is this indicative of "fake" vodka?

Re: Vodka at Centro

it seems strange that both times it was the third drink that was a bit off. were you eating any food? mowing down on the peanuts? no doubt, fake booze is a problem in beijing but in the case of centro, they let you smell the bottle of new vodka and if they were indeed being tricksters it would seem logical for them to pop out the "real" stuff in that case.

by the way, what was the response of the centro staff when you brought this all up?

Re: Vodka at Centro

It just may taste funny because too many patrons are being offered bottles to stick their snouts in and take a whiff  ... oh gross.

Re: Vodka at Centro

The waitress agreed the drink tasted off (I had her try it). The bartenders weren't too concerned as it was pretty busy and no other parties seemed to notice.

Yes it was the third drink, but I don't think it had anything to do with it. I was eating no food or snacks. Another guy in our group noticed the same strange taste after I pointed it out to him as did others in our group who I had try my drink. I am by no means suggesting any funny business on the part of the staff. I go there quite a bit and ususally the drinks are fine. I was just curious if anyone else had noticed this with vodka at Centro or anywhere else in Beijing.

Re: Vodka at Centro

Right after I sneezed on the bottle they let me open it and pour it into a glass. So it was not that gross I mean bird flu doesn't get transferred from human tohuman.

Re: Vodka at Centro

not sure. i'm not much of a vodka expert and i've never made it to three drinks at centro. i'll have to give it a try.

Re: Vodka at Centro

Well, i guess the vodka u took in that bar is Absolut Vodka, right? Coz Absolut vodka has many flavors, like Absolut Citron, Absolut pepper, ABSOLUT VANILLA, etc....guess that 's the reason why u thought the taste was funny...

Many people think they are full of niubility, and like to play zhuangbility, which only reflect their shability!

Re: Vodka at Centro

As stated earlier it was a typical bottle of Stoli. I opened the bottle myself. It was not flavored vodka.I know my vodkas. It tasted awful. I just want to know if anyone else has experienced the phenomenon.

Re: Vodka at Centro

I own a bar here in Beijing (not Centro) and I can attest to the fact that fake vodka can be a problem. Some owners willingly use it, other honest but unlucky ones get a few bad bottles mixed in with the good and don't even know they're serving it. I had a similar experience with Stoli at my bar a couple months ago when customers complained, and I was shocked to discover that the vodka was indeed fake. Also tasted like a cross between tequila and baijiu, really awfull stuff. It's probably not that Centro was trying to trick you, but that they got tricked by their distributer, who probably got tricked by his importer who probably. . . point being, you don't know if its fake until you taste it, and the vodka goes through many hands before it gets to your lips, and they have know way of knowing for sure that its real.

Re: Vodka at Centro

that's scary, because i assume that a place like centro is exactly the place where i WON'T get fake booze.

hey, how did you know the vodka was fake? just by the taste? i mean, did the fake bottle look exactly like the real thing (or was it a real bottle and fake booze)? and how am i supposed to know if the booze is fake or not when i'm at jenny lou's? ai ya!

Re: Vodka at Centro

Thanks for the info.

Further to Phil's questions, is this also a problem at stores like Jenny Lou's? Is there a way to tell by the bottle if a vodka is fake?

Re: Vodka at Centro

Unfortunately, there is no way to be 100% sure the vodka is real just by looking at the bottle. The only way to be sure is by tasting it. I haven't heard of this problem at Jenny Lou's, but I assume it isn't impossible that they have sold fake booze without knowing it too. Btw, the "stoli" that you drink at basically any cheap drinks drinks place or "all you can drink" nights is Chinese vodka called AnTe, but you probably won't taste the difference in a mixed drink anyway, and it shouldn't be any more harmful to your health than real Stolichnaya. AnTe is not the same as what is inside the fake stoli bottles, which doesn't even taste like vodka no matter what you mix it with.

Re: Vodka at Centro

The problem of fake booze is most common with Stoli vodka, or if you just ask for vodka tonic, vodka orange, etc. If you specify for a different vodka, say absolut or finlandia, you should be a bit safer. Also, whiskey, gin, etc. don't seem to have as many problems, though there are never any gurantees, and I've heard of fake just about anything turning up from time to time.
One rule to remember, if it seems too cheap to be real, it probably is. Case in point, I saw an ad for 200rmb Chivas with 5 btls of green tea and popcorn at a popular student place in wudaokou. Even if you're a huge place like Mix that sells tons of Chivas, you still have to pay about 160 kuai a bottle wholesale, so do the math and see if they could possibly be making money if they were selling the real stuff.

and in this case, it's a good thing that good chivas is being mixed with green tea... save the fake stuff for that.

Re: Vodka at Centro

We have just been informed of this web posting and would like to thank Guest123 for informing us, the Centro Management of their concern with the Vodka served. Being part of the Shangri-La group, The Kerry Centre Hotel Beijing only buys our alcohol from licensed and approved vendors here in China, as such we will be informing the supplier of the vodka mentioned of your feedback and will indeed remind our bar staff to be extra vigilant with regard to checking new bottle seals and noting down guests' feedback. For this particluar comment we have not received other reports, nevertheless we do take it seriously. Thank you again Guest 123 and we sincerely hope when you next visit Centro you will keep giving us feedback. A very concerned and committed Centro Management.

Re: Vodka at Centro

i think i must have had a similar experience. the other night, i drunk some vodka, it tasted bitter and after a while, my vision started to blur, my speech started to slur. after this i can't really remember a great deal, though in the morning, i awoke with a bad headache and a toothless forty-year old divorcee lying next to me.

such symptoms can only be induced by counterfeit alcohol - i'll be making further investigations next weekend, by personally collecting a number of samples at various establishments around town.

then it wasn't the vodka. 1965 was a bad year for divorcees. try a 1967 or a 1973 and you should be fine.
