Finally some great tasting desserts in Beijing

Don't know about you but all these premixed powder cake that sometimes look ok but always taste awful, I got tired of it very quickly. I've been trying so many places to get a good cake full on taste and though a few places were "ok" never got really satisfied...that is until this week end.

I read about a new place in cityw-e ( I know shame on me, I am still a big fan of Thats) and I decided to try with a very suspicious mind, I mean c'mon after a year here....

turns out the place was pretty nice, inside is cool and cosy with great leather seats, the coffee tasted like coffee though I must admit I do not know much about that lavazza brand they talked about but MAN, their desserts are just fantastic !!!!! I mean they have choice and the one I tried was just totally incredible. They have quite a nice selection and I must say I have not seen ANY of these stuff anywhere else around.

On top of that the boss (a loawai dude) gave me such good description of the cakes and suggested the perfect one for me....HEAVEN

If you like chocolate that's the place to go, and for the cake lovers I bet you'd never thought you'd have that kind of stuff here, a must tatse

They called "Le Palais" (if anyone knows what that means???) and they are behind the kerry center, big purple signe.

Know I got a reason to get my a.. to the gym!!!

I assumed it meant "The Palace." No???

Thanks for the feedback. I've been interested in trying this place. Do they have much in the way of non-chocolate cakes, etc?

I don't know, Babo. I've only been to Justine's once, about six or seven years ago admittedly, but it was preposterous. It was as if the entire place was conceived by someone whose sole experience of France was from bad hollywood movies. The decor was like some Turkish harem, swathed in silky cloths and decorated with ridiculously ornate fake Louis XIV (?) chairs. And it seemed like everything on the expensive menu was swimming in XO sauce or flambéed. It was almost as bad as Maxim's of Beijing -- a ridiculous Pythonesque parody of a French restaurant.

We never returned, obviously, but perhaps things have improved greatly in recent years.

What do you like about Justine's, Babo? How would you say it compares to other French places in Beijing such as Flo?

I must precise I am not talking about the restaurant, which I've never been to,
but the small deli on the left side of the main lobby (which is under renovation, the deli is next to the temporary entrance)

This is basically a bakery, specialized in cakes and pastries, with a few chairs and tables

They propose you sandwiches, pitas and coffees

A sandwich is around 20 rmb
the pastries around 15 rmb
same for coffee

The cakes are great and cheap (85 for a basic cake, compared to Tasty Taste where nothing comes under 160, and for the same quality if not better, u see the difference) and after 7.30 pm every evening, everything is at 50% Smile

I tend to like this place a lot, I can't really be honest

Re: Finally some great tasting desserts in Beijing

well I can tell you that I tried justine and all the other places and quite frankly I was always desapointed ...

as far as menu goes can't be sure I remember all of it but they had a good selection of belgian chocolate based cakes, several with liquor in it and some fruit mousse base cake of of which I remember clearly the raspberry one cause not easy to find that around here.

Oh and I just find out in the events section of that's classified website, they have a "party" on friday ... I'm going see you there!

Re: Finally some great tasting desserts in Beijing

mnk, Did the restaurant pay you to do advertisement here? You've got to learn how to market!

Re: Finally some great tasting desserts in Beijing

Nop Big Grin because if they did I'd have to give their money back cause when it comes to marketing I just simply can't do it LOL

I'm just an overly enthousiastic person in general and after living in BJ for 3 years I gave up in finding some place like I have back home in france...

just wanted to share a good finding with some fellow thatsbj reader

Re: Finally some great tasting desserts in Beijing

Hi everyone,
"Palais" has two different meanings in French. Both of them are relevent in this topics (orelse I would just let you in your ignorance!)
One of them, as one of you said, is palace.
The other one is (pardon my English) is the upper inside part of the mouth. It's particularly relevant for a restaurant since the french expression "avoir un palais fin" means beeing a gourmet.
Here is for the free French lesson!
Bon appétit!

a.k.a. the palate. In English, we also say that gourmets have an educated or fine palate.

Simply: Justine's (the deli/bakery) is a waste of time. All very mediocre quality.

Re: Finally some great tasting desserts in Beijing

The best cakes can be found at the Kempinski Hotel deli. Their chocolate orange cake is to die for...... I'm looking forward to trying the Palais!
