Me too... I studied Japanese for 3 years in college, and if I don't get some practice time with it, it's going to collapse and become dust in the wind. Can anyone help me out?
According to the Insider's Guide to Beijing, you can take Japanese classes at Beijing New Oriental School (15-1 Beisihuan Xilu, Haidian District, 8261 1818), Berlitz (Rm 801 Sunjoy Mansiion, 6 Ritan Lu Chaoyang District 6508 0244) and FESCO (14 Chaoyangmen Nandajie, 8561 8287).
But given the local interest in learning Japanese -- this, despite the animosity some Chinese harbor towards Japan -- there must be many other schools that teach the language in Beijing. And finding a Japanese tutor should be a piece of cake given the number of Japanese students here.
My schedule is pretty hectic these days; would prefer to find the Japanese tutor style approach, but not sure where to start searching. I wonder if there's some parallel Japanese equivalent of That's BJ's forum where some random Japanese people are thinking, "How do I find someone who wants to learn Japanese and is looking for a tutor?"
For some reason, I think Japanese students here are not in dire need of money and need to resort to teaching to pocket some extra dough. Will check out those places, Adam-san.
I've been out of school just long enough for my Japanese minor to become completely lost in the recesses of memory. I've become absolutely horrible! Would anyone possibly be interested in setting up some kind of social activity to at least get a little practice in?

I don't know if they have websites, but you could check with Beijing's Japanese listings magazines like Walker and Super City. Another option would be to post an ad in a restaurant popular with Japanese students like Shuangma Canting in Wudaokou (14 Xiwazhuang, Wudaokou, 6261 2041). Surely, some Japanese students are looking for extra income -- they can't all be loaded.
I just found this old thread and was wondering if anyone had additional information on Japanese Beginners Classes preferably in DongCheng area. I did a search on Berlitz and FESCO but didn't see anything for the upcoming year. Thank you! Any leads would be appreciated.

Yeah, I studied Japanese in college too. And I went to this New Oriental Japanese class for a winter vacation... It's really not that good! I think it's just about like studying on your own...
I had a Japanese tutor, a native Tokyo-ren.. she's a really good teacher and not expensive... I found her in Sculpting In Time Cafe at Wudaokou... She posted a small ad on the wooden message board at the entrance of the coffee shop, I saw it and I called. I was lucky... But she already went back to Japan, otherwise I'd introduce her to you guys.
So I suggest to try Sculpting in Time Cafe(Wudaokou).. message board
This may or may not be considered an Ad, but our training center has some Chinese teachers who are fluent in Japanese and can teach it. Or if that is not acceptable, we can also provide Japanese people to teach. The differences of course would that the Chinese teacher will be limited in any cultural lessons you might, but on the other hand, generally speaking, the Chinese instructor will cost less.
We currently do not have a schedule for Japanese learning, but if any of you are interested, please let us know what you are seeking and what type of class hours you might want and we can try to arrange a suitable class.
Our classrooms are located at Jianwai Soho and you can reach us at 5869-0743.
In my experience, Japanese university students are not particularily interested in their studies, and are definately not hard up for cash. If they are tutoring, its as part of a language exchange in the hopes of improving their Chinese. I am sure there are exceptions to this hanging around Wudakou somewhere, but I will be surprised if there are very many.
Another idea would be to find a Japanese housewife who is here with her husband and arrange language exchange with her. You could either teach her or her children. Many of the women I have met here are former business women with very excellent communications skills and practical experience working with English-speaking foriegners. Most speak excellent English and are interesting people too.
My written skills are awful (I learned my Japanese "on the streets" more often than in a classroom) but my husband has 1 kyu and a Japanese university degree, and might me interested in a language exchange or some tutoring with the right person. FYI: My husband is a Chinese national.
If you are interested please PM me with your experience and what you are looking to work on.

I told you my written Japanese was bad! But I am keen to practice with some like minded folks if there are any around the board. Let me know, and I'll start a thread for hacking it out in Japanese.
I'm heading to Japan in August to to hopefully live there for a good long while, and my Japanese has dissovled in my brain too. I've been hanging around with a couple of Japanese tourists this week, and my Japanese has gone from barely managable to dire.
I think the only full sentence I can remember is den wa bango nan ban desu ka? (hugely important tho). If anyone wants to get together and form a little study group, or let me know of one, then I'm more than ready to join in. I have the old edition BBC Japanese textbook, but alas, no tapes...

Where's the Japanese???
Hi!
I am a Japanese who just arrived in Beijing.
I don’t know how many people will check this old thread but anyway if you are Chinese or German, I would like to have language-exchange.
If you are not, I may be able to be your tutor.
Since my time is limited (I mean I need time to learn Chinese and will stay here only for 2 months), the group lesson like zombie_chris suggested might be a good option.
Then I can help some people at same time.
What do you think?
I look forward to your contact!

This thread is heaps old but I'm looking for Japanese classes in Beijing, preferably around Xizhimen or Chongwenmen. I speak fluent English and Mandarin and currently work as an ESL teacher. JLPT 4 standard needs revision and hope to take JLPT 3 this year. Open to doing a language exchange too.
