Ghosts in Beijing

I know, this is not that kind of thread you'd normally read in this board, but actually i'd really like your opinion, because its a feeling wich i encounter here in beijing more and more often. Please dont laugh at me Smile

Let me tell you a small story. About two years ago, i had a chinese friend here. He actually wasnt a local beijinger, but worked as a designer for a very small advertising company. The company was in a small appartment in the He Ping Li area. It consisted out of one office room, and a sleeping room for the employees, three of them actually.

So my friend lived there, with his colleagues, and at that time, i was a student, i had alot of time, i used to visit them quite frequently. Very soon one of his colleagues asked me, if i believe in ghosts. At that time, i didnt really believed in it, but i never declined it either. I asked him, why he would ask me such a strange question, and his answer came very fast: In this appartment, he claimed, would be ghost. I didnt pay much attention to this "nonsense" at that time.

About one month later, i came over again. We watched some dvds. We, that is me, my friend, and the other roommate. This roommates Girlfriend was there too, but she was in an other room surfing through the internet. It was evening. About maybe 9, 10 o'clock. While we were watching, Shrek 2 as far as I remember, we suddenly heard a scream from the other room. Of course we charged there immediately, just to find his girlfriend sitting like made out of stone, pale white in her face, on the bed next to the computer. She was not able to speak but soon started crying, falling into her boyfriends arms.

About 20 mins later she calmed down, and was able to act normally and, most importantly, speak again. She claimed she saw the ghost of a young girl, about 10 years old, pale, black hair (i guess chinese) pointing at her without any word.

In my heart, i still actually didnt believe these claims. So i forgot about it a few days later. My chinese friends were actually more concerned allready, since ghosts are a part of chinese tradition i guess.

About two or three weeks later, my friend found a lost kitten, small thing, just outside of his appartment. He allready had one cat there, and thought it wont hurt to give this cat some company. But this kitten was small, and young, and week. I guess it didnt had much chance to survive.

One day my friend called me, rather nervous, and asked me to come over. I went there and he told me his story, wich obviosly just happened a few hours ago.

He said that last night the kitten died. He planed (like it is chinese tradition with dead pets) to throw it out. He put it in a bag, on the floor, to take it out with the trash later. Than he had to work, and after his boss left the office, since he felt a little tired, he decided to take a afternoon nap. He fell asleep very quickly. But awaked soon, because his other mewed loudly from his window.

He opened his eyes, and turned arround to the window, and there she sat. It was the ghost again, a young girl, about 10 years old, pale, almost dead skin. With a cruel gaze in her eyes she talked to my friend "You have to bury the kitten! You have to bury it! Here under the window! Hurry up! Bury it!" Her voice became more and more agressive, and suddenly, just like that my friend woke up, from what seemed to be just a scary nightmare. But this dream felt so real, his body was covered in sweat, and when he turned to the window, he saw his cat, sitting at the window, looking outside.

Unnecessary to say, that my friend buried the kitten immediately. He was really nervous about it, and i began to think that something was not going on quite right in this appartment. Up to this point all of the three roommates claimed to have witnessed signs of the "paranormal" phenomena going on in this appartment. I still wasnt clearly convinced at this point though.

Some time later, i went out with my friend. We used to go out every weekend, and well, as i said, i was student at that time, so there really wasnt that much money for me to spend. The night wasnt really good though, so soon we decided to go to his place, watch some dvds and hang out a little. He seemed a little tired so went to sleep soon, i still watched a dvd in the office. Since all the beds in the bedroom were full, i made myself comfortable at the office couch. Soon after the dvd planning to go to bed. As i lied there, everything dark, maybe 4 or 5 o'clock in the morning, it suddenly happened.

I heard some strange noises "Clack...Clack...Clack..." It allmost sounded like steps, outside the room on the floor. I actually am quite a nervous person myself, so i stood up and switched the light on. The noise disappeared instantly. I looked outside of the room, down the floor, but i couldnt recognize anything. So i thought my senses were playing some tricks on me and went to bed again. But just one minute later it happened again "Clack...Clack...Clack" I jumped up, switched the light on, and also switched the light on in the floor. Of course there were no noise anymore. I went down the floor in the direction of the noise. But i couldnt find anything. I waited a few minutes, but nothing happened. So i went back to sleep. But, just about one minute after i switched the light of, it happened again. "Clack...Clack...Clack". At this point i was thinking, i was kind of going crazy. So i switched on the light, and waited there til sunrise, zapping through dvds. At sunrise i packed my things and went home.

After that day i allways felt kind of uncomfortable to be at this appartment. But very soon, that company went bankrupt anyway, so my friend had to move out. I never saw this appartment again, but i still know exactly where it is and how to come there. Sometimes i imagine to go there again, during the night, and lift the curtain from the riddle, but, to tell the truth, i am damn scared when i do so.

Well, enough for the storytelling. What you think about the written above things is absolutely up to you. I for myself find, that there are things in this world we maybe cant understand completely. Afterlife might be just one of these.

Believing in ghosts is a big part of chinese tradition. I actually heard one or two similar ghost stories from friends here in beijing. To tell the truth, when i stay in a new appartment, or some place i wasnt before, since then it allways takes some time for me to adjust myself to the surrounding. Even in my own appartment, when i am here alone it takes me 20 to 30 minutes to find a peaceful sleep (ok i'm not used to sleep alone anyway :) ). What are your, if you have some, experiences in this matter? Do you have something to share maybe? Or do you maybe think that me and my friends are just a little mental and seriously overreacting?

When I was young I used to pray for a bike. Then I realized that God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike and prayed for forgiveness.

Re: Ghosts in Beijing

Here's a ghost story...

Used to spin at a club in Beijing, but for some reason, the staff would clear everything up super fast and get out of the place as soon as possible at the end of the night. It was a newish building (probably 60's - 70's) and not what you would call creepy, it used to be a theatre.

The weird behaviour from the staff went on for a few months and even though there were 2 slightly raised corridors running along side the main room, they'd strangely only use the left hand corridor.

It was an identical corridor to the right side and again, nothing at all scary about it, very modern with newly fitted carpet etc..

One night, myself and a Swedish dj stayed behind and decided to program the "intelligent" lighting, it takes time so we did it in shifts, each taking a nap in the karaoke rooms. Neither of us drank alcohol and after a noisy night of partying, the music was off.

The only noise was from the cooling fans in the lights....the rest of the room in pitch darkness so we could see the colours, pattern and position of each light....... then about 1.30 am on a warm humid night, it happened !

Re: Ghosts in Beijing

I've never experienced any, but heard a lot...

One of my classmates has done some summer job in the Forbidden city, and she told me that there was one spooky alley... woooohuuuuwoooo...

All the windows along the alley have been sealed, but every rainy day, they could hear women crying in those rooms...

I totally believe it, since there're so many murders in that place...

woooohuuuuuwooo.... floating away from the computer...

Re: Ghosts in Beijing

The story is scared, I used to live in He Ping Li Area on myself. I believe there were something mysterious in the world, thanks my lord never let me met in real life. Only special people has the ability to communicate with ghosts, but for normal people, It is not good sign to have this experience.

Livin' might mean takin' chances, but they're worth takin' Lovin' might be a mistake, but it's worth makin'

Re: Ghosts in Beijing

I personally don't believe in ghosts. when i was a little kid, i lived with my grandma for a while and it's an old big house. my grandma don't like open many lamps, and only open one in the main room which is located in the middle of the house, and i used to staying in a small dark room next to it. I was always look back wherever i go when i was little, because i wanna know if there is anything follow me, and at that time, i believed in ghosts. Since i always get upset by dark, ghosts, kinda suffering at that moment, so i asked my grandma " grandma, do you believe in ghosts?", "no, i don't believe in it. it's made up, you need to be brave, when you grow up, you will know ghost it's not real". those words were really work on me from then on. I keep telling me "be brave, don't scare yourself, there is no ghost, no anything that we shall be afraid of". Wink

Re: Ghosts in Beijing

Okay, ... 8-)

Well like I said, one night this strange thing happened.....

The doors into the disco flew open, shattering the silence and my dj partner came barreling in at full speed, screaming "get out, there are ghosts, run F****** run".

Now before anyone calls us pussies, this was very, very frightening !!

His eyes were bright red and streaming with tears and he isn't a small guy, this was something really terrible, so I hit the master power breaker to 'off' and whaddaya know? we were smack bang in the middle of this huge room in total darkness, he is livid and the way out is somewhere through a forest of bar stools and sharp cornered tables.

We made it to the exit, (not sure how we were going to fight off whatever it was with a couple of Carlsberg ashtrays) and as quick as we could to the front door of the building. The glass doors had an unlocked chain draped between the handles, one of us must have pulled it off because we were out into the street still running... (to this day, I can't figure out why 2 security guards were asleep somewhere with the building unlocked).

My buddy said "enough, enough" and we both stood there in the middle of a deserted street, hands on knees, trying to figure out what was going on.

He said that he had been watching a vcd in the karaoke room, dozed off a bit and woken up surrounded by "monsters and noises", his eyes were still red and I even thought he might be a bit weird somewhere above the shoulders, anyway we headed down to Dongsi and a 24hr restaurant and talked about nothing for ages.

Hours must have passed because the electric busses were trundling around and people were walking backwards outside, it was getting light and we had to get back to the dj house and get some shut eye.

At 1pm the Ayi woke us up and wanted to clean the bedrooms, the club wasn't going to open until 9, so with a shrug we both agreed to go back and finish the lighting programing on condition nobody was left alone, after all, ghosts don't visit on sunny afternoons do they?

On arrival at the club, the sun was blazing, it was cooler inside and the security guards were playing badminton in the car park. We headed for the office and asked who was in the club, apparently some workers fixing some broken stools. Nothing more was said about it so we headed for the club.... nothing scary.... pretty normal, and turned all the smaller power switches "off", before booting up the whole system.

Maybe we had just got over excited about the happenings of last night, who knows? we were probably too tired to care by now. Neither of us was going to stick around after tonight's disco session to find out.

A couple of hours passed and by now, we were pushing buttons and joking about the whole thing. The sound system was on and turns were taken at programing the lights and playing tunes, he seemed okay although I was getting tired and moody. What the heck, the workers are noisy, the music is on , I'm going to show him and get some sleep in his "haunted karaoke room"......

I can't even remember falling asleep, the furniture was comfy and it was a hot, bright day outside, Ghosts? yeah right.

TICK TICK TICK TICK!!!!! "what the hell is that?", my whole head was shaking with every noise (pulse sounded like chopsticks snapping) and I felt myself tumbling head over heels without actually moving, the room was full of clouds.....OMG... I didn't know whether to drink water or cry and was completely stunned !

As I made for the door something tripped me (probably a cushion) and I hit my chin on the edge of a coffee table (still have a little white line there today) but I made it to the door, eyes streaming and straight out of a fire exit into the car park.

Whatever it was, we both quit.... ghosts or whatever, bye bye. For 2 months I was convinced that these things actually haunted us.

SOooo what happened....

A few weeks later on a routine check up in London, the doctor asked about my health. I told him about my chin etc and got around to me telling him my right arm was strangely cold. We discussed what had happened in Beijing and he asked if I was sure my left wasn't actually warmer (something that comes with poisoning)

In the end, it turned out the happenings were actually both dj's being zapped by fumes from the carpet glue in the corridor while no air conditioning was on. Whatever it reacted with, it was odorless!

We both nearly became ghosts!

( the building is no longer used for entertainment )

Re: Ghosts in Beijing

Actually, Zed, there are many many this kind of ghost stories in China, what u met was only one of them . as u suggested in ur thread , ghost is part of Chinese tradition. it is said when somebody is dead , there probably would be a ghost, it is the deadperson, if he hates somebody when he is alive ,then he tries to become a ghost scaring the person he dislikes ,
l don't know how to describle a ghost story vividly, coz l am also afraid of it ,and don't pat that much attention, but if u listen to some old people telling them , then u will be really scared ,

l remembered when l was young, l can't sleep by myself at night after hearing some ghost stories from my grandparents, coz they seemed so real , when l was sleeping , l usually covered my head with the whole blanket , sweating through the whole night Wink

that's bj is interesting, l like the website

Re: Ghosts in Beijing

Just found this thread again, and thought we might get some more stories.

I have read that dreams or experiences of falling, flying etc are often associated with astral projection - when you are aware of your spirit going out of your body. Of course, you have to believe that you have a spirit which is separate-but-attached to your body to accept this theory, but it might make it less scary for people who have had this experience. I have been a spiritualist in the past and I saw some really weird things which could not be logically explained (for me, anyway). Maybe those people who dont like to believe in ghosts could explain some of these things in other ways. Also while I think of it, sometimes when you are falling asleep or waking up, if you feel like you cannot move at all and you have to really, really struggle to move, then this too is a sign that you are about to ...... leave your body, and astral project. This is not dying by the way, although we may get that sensation of consciously leaving the body when we die - no-one knows for sure, do they?

Any more stories?

Re: Ghosts in Beijing

That thing that happens just before you fall asleep, when you feel you can't move, like ocpaul explaned, that is something called alfa state. And it is like intro to astral projection, it is complete relaxation, and extreme concentation of the mind at the same time, but it is quite difficult, to do this, cause some people find it hard to relax that much without falling asleep, or just relax at all, the daily worries etc. So, some poeple tried to find some other positions in which you are to practice this relaxation without falling asleep. Anyway, your subconsciousness is alert then, and it is believed by many that you can influence happenings in your daily life just by playing with it, creating mental images and so on. It is very interesting topic.

I'm trying to reach that level by doing "autogenous training". In fact it's very relaxing - and sometimes I need that state of mind here. Also think it's an interesting topic, but sadly there is much nonsense out there regarding this topic (written and "teached")

PS: Maybe coco_lin should try some "autogenous training" hehe..

Re: Ghosts in Beijing

You are right, it is a bit ungrateful to discuss these on any forum, cause most of the time people will come out with all sort of things, superstition, being scared, etc.
Or, wait, no, they started this topic, so we are the intruders here with all our spiritual hippy crap when all they wanted is some bonfire scary stories about an escaped madman with a hook for a hand Big Grin

So, ocpaul, should we annex this ghostly topic and turn it into something more serious? I will bring the incense sticks... I mean I, not myself Wink

Re: Ghosts in Beijing

I want to meet someone who has done the Transendental Meditaion flying (siddhi?) course to ask them what it is like. I did the basic TM training once and found it was quite good, dont do much meditation now... more nodding off in my chair haha.

I dont mind incense sticks although the smell is a little bit too heavy for me and tends to hang around longer than necessary. Good in the loo for getting rid of the "bad beers" smell though.

More into preparing for the end of my world at the moment - not that I'm dying or anything, just that a lot of people believe that things are hotting up for the 2012 - 2017 period. Even the Mayans seem to think this was the end of their calendar ! I wonder why they stopped there?

Yes, being an old hippie-sort-of-guy (oh wow man...peace) I am definitely into spirituality, energy stuff, the Beatles, UFOs, aliens, and all that crap, although I dont hit the red weed (war of the worlds) or brown weed and never have. It always used to make me sick as a dog. I used to smoke cigarettes for a couple of years in my 20's - so that makes me a bit of an old devil I suppose.

I think we should get a UFO thread going too sometime.

Hardly a guru though - except in looks. Long beards are not that popular in BJ I guess unless you are Fu Man Chu. (I mean the guy with the beard, or was it a mustache, NOT the band)

Re: Ghosts in Beijing

The problem with incense sticks is not the smell, the problem is the fire-alarm in my room. But I have been very enlighted afterwards how long it takes that 5 guards are hammering at my door (did I ever mention how much huge guards scare me?). Ahh yes, to answer the question, it takes 3 minutes.

And guru, the maya calendar thing also worried me some time ago, but I came to the conclusion that they were simply bored to think about things that happen in 950 years if the property management didn't seem to be responsible for the things that happen after 2 months you move in. Look at some buildings at Tulum how they look these days. "Built to last forever" ha !

But to give you hope about the "end of the world" thing, I recently translated Nostradamus from French back to Latin.

Don't worry, we have many centuries left (this is in fact a little word game, done by myself ..haha !)

PS: guru, don't make fun of chicken sacrifices... it's pretty common... aah yes, I'm talking bout restaurants...what else.....

Re: Ghosts in Beijing

Is that why the xiaojie sometimes have feathers still sticking to their mouths - they have just bitten of a chickenhead to make someones chicken soup. Thankfully, not mine, as I try not to eat anything with eyes.... although you can never tell here.

Re: Ghosts in Beijing

can't answer you that one. But I would have also a question to my guru:

Yesternight, Yan Xishan enlighted me with his GOD FAQ. Still there are two questions left:

I keep wondering if there is an afterlife, and if there is will they be able to break a twenty?

If God exists, why doesn't he give me a clear sign? Like making a large deposit in my name at a Swiss bank?

(both quotes are done by W. Allen, the guy who had some kind of ayi problem, few years ago..hehe)

Hope to hear some answers....

Re: Ghosts in Beijing

Hmmmm.... was it you who was hearing voices? They might answer you I suppose if you ask them. Smile

Personally I believe in an afterlife - not because of any God thing or a religious thing either but because twice in my life, I have found myself up by the ceiling (in 'spirit' not body) while I was resting and still wide awake, so I reckon that some part of me must be separate from my body and maybe that part of me also lives on. I am constantly testing my beliefs though. (I am a questioner, not a 'faith-man'). After all, most major religions believe in some form of 'spirit' and so it is possible that it might be right. Of course, various religions put constraints around this, but essentially they all believe the same thing. Maybe it is just an in-born fear of death and so that is why all religions talk about an afterlife. (For some it is only if you are good enough to 'earn it').

Yes, I wonder what the currency is 'up' there on a cloud?

Clear sign.... haha. If Erik von daniken is correct, you could be getting that sign from the 'gods' anytime in the next few years.

What kind of 'sign' would you believe. THATS the real question?

Any advanced civilisation would have plenty of mind altering machines and probably could make you see anything you wanted to - including well-known messiahs, space ships, crop circles, etc.

So the God bit is acedemic really.

As far as banks are concerned, I would like to open a few accounts in different countries too, but so far the money laundering regulations have stopped me. Any ideas?

Re: Ghosts in Beijing

the scary part of a ghost story is in the setting not in ghost themselves. If a ghost sets up an appointment with you in your office on Tuesday 10am, and shows up on time and ask you to bury the cat, you won't get as scared as you will get annoyed. On the other hand if a person shows up at night in your house, lets you know his existance, and leaves without a trace, you will get scared. So the scariness is not because they are ghosts but the spookiness.

I don't know if ghost exists but I suppose if they can prove they exist then instantly they become just another form of being. And death is not to be afraid of but to be planned for ("plan" in the sense of "retirement plan"). Ghost stories are foundamentally self-defeating.
sorry for being thick and spoiling good stories with rationalization. Zed you are a good story teller. thanks for taking the time. for me it's like watching movie -- you know it's just a movie but you still enjoy it.

Unfortunately, just knowing they are a ghost would freak some people out - whether they made an appointment or not.

Quote:

I think you kid yourself, if you think you would not be scared if you could see through someone or if they appeared without a head - even if they had an appointment. And... what about your secretary? How would she handle it!

I dont quite know what you mean by 'spookiness' of the situation. Fear is a fear is a fear, and preparing yourself for it, probably is not going to help much.

How many 'other types of being' do you know? What proof do you need that they exist? Do you want to feel them, see them, hear them, measure them, sense them, film them? All these things have been done, but some people do not want to have their comfortable world disrupted by things they dont understand.

Aliens are a good story until you get to meet one (which I have not), but many many people claim to have met them, seen them, and some even to be operated apon by them, AND not all the people want publicity either, so it cannot just be made up for their egos.

What makes a story believeable? Maybe knowing the person well who tells it? Maybe, some personal experience? who knows, but I think maybe you just dont want to think about it too much in case you freak yourself out. Not everything in life can be planned, and flexibility and trust-in-life are probably of more use in the long run.

There are no such things as GHOSTS.
It's all imagination or a stress/lack of sleep induced phenomena.

Re: Ghosts in Beijing

just a joke about aliens:

guy: last night a spaceship landed in my backyard.

girl: you don't have a backyard to your house.

guy: three aliens came out of the spaceship and drank water from my fountain.

girl: you don't have a fountain.

guy: my driver and butler were scared to death.

girl: driver? butler? were you dreaming that you saw aliens, or were you dreaming that you were a rich man?
