The only foreign guy i've met that wanted to learn Russian was an American redneck that married a Russian illegal immigrant girl (she paid him $5000). I began teaching him, but he abandoned the idea after 1 week.
Russian IS a difficult language to learn. As far as i know, all slavic languages are..
Teaching material is ISHHH... Pimsleur and the stuff that i bought at Foreign Language Bookstore was horrible. The language they use is either 50-years outtated or just awkward. Nobody speaks like that. Can't say anything about Ruslan and other books on Amazon. But my advice - don't try any self-teaching material without a Russian person's supervision. They should be able to tell what is useful and what is not. There is also plenty of learning material on the internet.
Some things to start with:
1. Learn the Cyrillic alphabet:

http://www.masterrussian.com/blalphabet.shtml (capital, small, written letters)
2. Watch video of Russian speakers. Annotated childrens' comedy program, Eralash: http://russian.dmll.cornell.edu/brtf/eralash1/winstart.htm

There's a lot of history there, it would be good to understand more. I've known the alphabet since the 80's and besides the Russian's i've worked with have been the most friendly and hospitable people you could meet. There are exceptions but on the whole, i like em.

Similar to music albums. Lots of useful topics ranging from Greetings to Business meetings and even dating someone. English tutorial and lots of Russian vocab read by natives. teach yourself books arent bad, theres a couple of different books, one thats absolute beginners and one that carries on from that although you can use this one on its own as a start...
Ruslan 1 and 2 are pretty good
Through Russia with love
Transit (Tranzeet or транзит) is good for intermediate level...
These are some I can think of off the top of my head... sorry I havent provided links so you can see which is which and get a basic Idea... must get the kids to school... will do later if I remember (getting old so memory is... uh what was I saying...
)

Ruslan and through russia with love were used as course books for a couple of classes I took... the others are stuff I used when I first decided to learn Russian... (not that I am fluent... I only really got to intermediate level before starting Chinese...) Nearly all these books also come with cds/tapes...
