I always thought Paul (Steak'n'Eggs) was quite nice person. He does talk a lot and most of the time it is about his awards, business, life or sports, but it kind of is amusing and makes it a little bit personal, don't you think...

It's a love hate thing. Anyone that walks around talking about how much money and whatever they've got to the people who are the source thereof is a foool. But, at the sametime there is something about that place that sets it apart from its contemporaries...
Say what you want about Paul and the Steak and Eggs staff but you have to admit: they're real characters. Like 'em or hate 'em, they stand out from the anonymous crowd.
And guess what else I heard: Paul's won the contract to cook for the US Embassy staff cafeteria! That's big bizness.
thats true they are quite some characters. E.g. the staff: Instead of coming and getting my order, get me some hot sauce etc. they just sit at the next table and eat their own food. And no matter how many times i tell them to get it for me, they just call someone else whos not gonna show up for another 5 minutes. They are really incompetent.
I got nothing remotely intelligent or witty to say.

My favorite server at Steak and Eggs is Lee. Here's what he said to my boyfriend and I last time we went for lunch:
"I wish I have girlfriend. Girlfriend is nice. With girlfriend, sometimes watch movies, sometimes romanticah!"
Gotta love it.

yeah, lee gets my vote too. Especially when he whips out his little book, for you to pronounce English words for him. Then proceeds to get it horribly incorrect. God loves a trier!
I find the service excellent in there, maybe because I go out of my way to be nice to them. I've seen boarish expats barking orders at them (loudly, slowly, in English), and I just cringe. Maybe you think they should speak perfect English, as they are working in a western restaurant. But if they could speak perfect English, they certainly wouldn't be working in Steak n Eggs, taking orders from loud, obnoxious idiots. Cut 'em some slack guys, they try their best. Try learning a little Chinese. Crazy thought!
And their constant humiliation at the hands of Paul and that awful partner of his, in full view of all customers, isn't going to make them want to bend over backwards. Be patient!
Even if Paul took two old ladies, put them into headlocks then body slammed them, it would be hard for me to hate the place. They whip up one of the best, "i'm so hung over I can't see straight" breakfasts in the city. Without them I would never survive a Sunday.
I got nothing remotely intelligent or witty to say.
Except big portoin, I really cant see anything appealing of steak and eggs.
And when I saw the many prizes they won on the wall of their restaurant,
I feel kinda sad that for the last several years, there are no competitor strong enough to beat them or at least can be threat to them.
This is neither good for them nor for customers.
Lack of strong competitors results in retrogress.
And it's always better for customes to have both Mc's and KFC, cocacola and pepsi.
i ll stick to grandma and their skillets for a basic reason: food
the "3 eggs, 1 steak, mashed potatoes and toasts in a pool of water" breakfast i once had there
was below any gastronomical standard for a meal and made my cholesterol levels take off like Discovery
but one day i ll have a coffee there to enjoy the show, from what u wrote, sounds promising

I've only been to Steak 'n' Eggs once, on my last day in BJ the last time I was there and I really enjoyed myself. Thought the service was great, the waiter was nice, loved the food and the cocktails. Paul seemed nice too esp after I told him I spent many years in Canada. Perhaps I was seeing things through rose-tinted glasses that night since I was with my bf and having way too much fun (yes eventhough I was leaving) but I will definitely go check it out again just to see if I notice the sort of things everyone else has written about.
Just about a year ago, when I first arrived in BJ, my co-worker & I were sent to Steak 'n Eggs to pick up bread for an event we had going on...both of us, being new to the city, had no clue how to get back to the subway station to return to our school.
In this torrential downpour, Lee held my umbrella and walked me to the station. It was one of my very first impressions of China and I will never forget his kindness. It's the people who work there (they always make me smile with everything that goes on) that keep me returning...that and the fruit plate
steak and eggs was the first western restaurant i was taken to in beijng...the first restaurant actually; being as i spent 3 months in a city with no western restaurants...i was craving some western hard.
i don't care about anything except it's big portions of quasi-decent western food at a reasonable price. as long as i'm with friends and getting gut-rotting full on something other than kung pao chicken, i'm a happy camper
I don't know if he got the contract or not, but I was in there a couple of weeks ago and an order came in from the new US Embassy. Paul started jumping around and barking orders and was really trying to break some kind of record in filling the order.
They were closed today for some reason. I went next door to Grandma's and it was very good. Nice place, good service, good food.
sorry I stopped going there last year, simple really; when my wife and my 2yr old went there for Sat brekkie we ordered two of the large brekkies you know with everything - pancakes, bacon, toast ham, eggs etc - we asked for an extra plate to share with our 2yr old and they told us NO, we had to buy a kid meal for the two year old..... So of course me being me told them rather politely to FOff and bring a plate as we were not going to order so much food to just waste as we have more than enough with the two big brekkies. Well the old bag would not relent so I we left the food on the table and got up and went to Grand mas????
I have told this story many times and I always hear similar stories, their being rude, impolite, obtrusive etc. so why go – is it the only game in town? Oh yea, the embassy thing for a Canadian, he really puts an emphasis on the American Embassy…go figure… watch out for those Canadian coins
We tried the place twice and one thing was for sure: the food was absolutely nothing special. At least we didn't have to listen to anyone's life history! Doubt we will be back for a third try.
The Steak & Eggs is still open near WAB. Caters mostly to the students from WAB during lunch time and most other times is rather empty. I think Paul used to go there every other day, but I don't think he or YangYang even bother to go there and concentrate more on the other location.
Lets say it is a popular Western restaurant. Its good in the sense that often it can solve a craving that a person might have for a particular type of food, lets say blueberry pancakes or unlimited coffee.
Word in Shunyi is that Steak&Eggs by WAB closed, for good, about a week ago. Everything gone, padlock on the door. I have hear talk, however, of it moving north to the new EuroPlaza which will be completed in a few months, but have not had confirmation of that from anyone who would know.
Tried to go to the Steak n Eggs by WAB this past weekend, only to find the place looking like a construction zone. It was nice that it was in this location, although somehow, the decor and interior never felt very inviting and looked rather tacky. Hope the new place will have a better feel.
I was there last week for lunch so I guess Paul made the decision quickly. Never seemed to do much business there anyway, so maybe a new location will work out better for him.

Actually, this is not true. Paul put in a bid for the American Embassy cafeteria but did not get the contract.

I'm a somewhat regular customer of Steak and Eggs, but my daughter likes Grandma's better, so we alternate.
Steak and Eggs gets my vote for being a great breakfast on a Sunday morning. I know there are many places to go, but Steak and Eggs does it for me.
