Happy Valley Beijing
I went to Happy Valley Beijing (opened today), and it was pretty cool. I always think that a city isn't *really* developed until it gets a nice modern amusement park. Until today, Beijing has been pretty much lacking in this department.
Happy Valley Beijing is by east fourth ring road. Not all of the rides and areas are operational yet. There's still lots of construction work going on. But the sense is that this place is as big as a Disneyland pretty much. It's got some sweet roller coasters and rides. However, be prepared to wait in line forever... the signature roller coaster ride took us 3 hours in line to ride.
And unlike western amusement parks, "waiting in line" means being pushed and shoved continuously.
But overall, it was really fun. Certainly a welcome alternative from the usual daily Beijing life. And also, it should get better as more rides and more areas come online.

Is it the carnival annually you are talking about? I thought it's somewhere near BaBaoShan? and to be honest, I didn't like it.

No, it's not. It's a new state-of-the-art amusement park that just opened today.

Actually, Happy Valley was surprisingly intellectual property theft-free.

I'm trying to think of a better solution that doesn't entail getting on an airplane, but I'm just fresh out of ideas. Suffice it to say, it was fun, but a lot of waiting involved. Next time, going on a weekday would be highly recommended.

Re: Happy Valley Beijing
I think I'll wait until it's complete, and visit on a weekday, but I'm definitely planning a visit. I've been saying for years that Beijing needs a decent theme park, and lo-and-behold they go and build one for me! It looks like a good place, from what I've seen - I don't think 160RMB is too much to ask to be honest, it's not like I'll be going every week.

anyone been to Happy Valley in the dead of winter (aka right now)? Can't imagine whipping around on a roller coaster in 5 degrees celsius. And how's the English signage?

i take it back. I went today with family in tow and it was fantastic. Really nice park.
Pixar Studios (A Bug's Life) might have another opinion on that ... granted ants all kinda look the same in real life but the cartoon ants that are the #1 character attraction at Happy Valley bear a striking similarity to those in "A Bug's Life"

Re: Happy Valley Beijing
Oh, and I went back in the "dead of" the mild winter just passed as well -- albeit on a sunny day. Don't forget the gloves! I would suggest that anybody looking to have a good time at Happy Valley adjust their expectations downward by quite a lot, and then it may actually be possible. There are at least two relatively-terrifying rides (as much due to the aforementioned dubiousness in re: local construction standards, as well as knowledge of the relative cheapness of human life in China, as due to the actual design of the rides themselves), so that much may be a draw for some.
Place was not nearly as big as Disneyland, let alone Disneyworld -- ah, maybe HK Disney is smaller, and this is what is being referred to? Characters are all super-annoying. Oh, my lord, and the "MUSIC" -- worst part, by far, horrible horrible horrible. They cycled what we timed as a 26-minute CD over and over and over again, which would probably be a really ugly scene if one were waiting in line for an appreciable length of time. If this is the trash the Chinese take to be Western culture, why the eagerness to adopt it?
Even the rides that were supposed to be open (not many under the best of winter circumstances) were sometimes inexplicably closed or didn't make the announced opening time. Lines were minimal, given that this is China, but still, all in all, I had a better time adjusting my expectations even further down and going to the amusement park in the SE part of town... the brazen intellectual property liberties are half the fun (but the place was surprisingly okay in any event).
In summer, the rides at Happy Valley will be better ...
but there's no way that the crowds won't S U C K (as related above).

Re: Happy Valley Beijing
I have just returned from taking the kids to HK Disney, and my 5 and 3 year old had I am sure the best two days of their lives.
My wife and I were quite amazed at the affordability of it.
We had to go through Shenzen as the HK flights were full, but basically 2 nights at the Disney Hollywood Hotel, and three days, two in Disneyland, cost us about Y3000 per person including food!
I had heard the lines were long, but being mid week on a non holiday week, it was fantastic. The longest we ever waited was 20 minutes, and most rides and shows you can just walk right on to/in to.
If anyone wants the details, let me know.

Re: Happy Valley Beijing
I went Happy Valley-ing last weekend and they open early (8:30?) and close at 10pm so for your 160RMB you can stay all day. While one or two people queue for a ride, the others can queue for another, but yes, the queues are horrendous. People were queuing for the cinema (15 minute film - 4D) at 4:05pm for the 5pm film. Anyway, a good day out for all but not cheap. Extra cost for the boat ride (10RMB - 15/20mins) and the train ride(20RMB - 20mins) but most of it is included in the admission costs.
To quote H.L. Mencken...

Re: Happy Valley Beijing
I must admit, i do love a good theme park.
But i remember years ago, going to Beijing Amusement Park, and swearing that for as long as i was in China, i would never take my feet off the ground again!
So, have things really got better now, safety wise? I really would like to check out this Happy Valley place (i remember the one is ShenZhen was awesome) but i'd like someone's comments on safety.
And if it does turn out to be safe, why don't we make it a board get together event? Who's up for a day at the theme park?
