Hatsune disappointment

First, let me say that I've been dining at Hatsune regularly for years and I think their food is consistently great - the sushi is always fresh, I love their bento box lunches, their rolls are creative. But, I've always been puzzled by their reputation for good service - they've won tbj's "Best Service" category two years in a row, but I've always found the service to be slow and unorganized.

Yesterday was the final straw. My dining companion and I sat down for lunch and it took fifteen minutes for the waitresses to stop chatting at their station (I watched them) to come over and take our order. The food trickled out slowly. I finished my tea, but no one came by to refill my cup. We ordered and our food arrived, dish by dish, over the space of 45 minutes. Finally, after my dining companion had received -- and eaten -- all his food, I asked about my final item, a 119 roll. The waitress went to check on it... it turns out 45 minutes after ordering, they hadn't even started MAKING it yet. I cancelled it, we paid the bill and left in disgust.

I've come to accept mediocre service from most Beijing restaurants, but when a restaurant such as Hatsune, which prides itself on good service - and wins AWARDS for its "good service"! - offers such a sloppy, aggravating dining experience, I feel that its worth complaining. Hatsune - you could do better.

Re: Hatsune disappointment

I never understood the appeal of Hatsune. I thought everything about it was quite ordinary. (Not bad, mind you, but all the reviews and verbal descriptions and my actual experience certainly did not match up.) My view on Hatsune is that it's a good restaurant that wins awards because of cute and clever advertising campaigns (that then drives votes in all the reader awards) more than actual high quality food. As for service, it hasn't been bad in my experience, but far from a "best service" award for my book. Also, the facilities are starting to show signs of age... the area on the front stairwell is starting to peel and crack. In my mind, it's not hugely superior to Isshin anymore. (And I went to Hatsune today so my opinion shouldn't be out-of-date per se.)

Re: Hatsune disappointment

What I like about Hatsune is the fact that they at least do the rolls differently. I swear I've been to probably 10 to 20 different Japanese restuarants in Beijing and I'll be damned if they aren't all sharing the same exact menu. The only two Japanese places in town that don't have the exact same cookie-cutter menu are Hatsune (with their funky rolls) and Jazz Ya (which has weird sh*t like Japanese pizza with mayonnaise toppings)

Re: Hatsune disappointment

That weird sh*t you're describing sounds like okonomiyaki, and it's really tasty. Tongue Particularly if it's Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, which has noodles in it. Try it sometime. Smile (And yes, you can order it without mayonnaise...)

Re: Hatsune disappointment

I like okonomiyaki too - there's a place near the Lufthansa center that has great okonomiyaki. They start preparing your food as soon as you order it, too. Wink

I disagree that ALL Japanese restaurants in Beijing have the same cookie-cutter Japanese menu. Len Len has great, creative food, as does Meshiya. And I haven't eaten there but Yotsuba is supposed to be terrific.

In any case, I LIKE the food at Hatsune. Note In my original post I called their rolls "creative." My gripe with them is about their sloppy service.

Re: Hatsune disappointment

You call hatsune's advertising campaign 'clever and cute'? As an advertising creative who has worked with Hatsune I have to disagree with you. They don't have any strategy and don't know what they want, they tell the designer 'whatever that's different, Japanese cult comic style is preferred', then reject a draft that meets the brief for no reason - their 'marketing manager' is a girl who's merely 19 I believe. As a result their ads are inconsistent and crap.

Re: Hatsune disappointment

clever and cute compared to what else is out there. Show me another Japanese restaurant that has any sort of memorable campaign in english here in beijing

Re: Hatsune disappointment

On a relative basis, on a relative basis. Yes, they're inconsistent (I remember an ad with a guy eating a pile of wasabi followed by an ad of... Homer Simpson?), but it's obviously "different" than other Japanese restaurants. (I personally didn't find it funny, but it was memorable at least.)

Re: Hatsune disappointment

Reading all the defensive comment, seems that admin has very good relationship with Hatsune ot at least one of the biggest fan of Hatsune in Beijing

No offense......that's just my impression....Hatsune is not a bad restaurant though.....

I like it for sure! But also willing to try new ones all the time. Again, show me any other Japanese restaurant that has unique menus and a clever ad campaign, and you can bet I'll give it a try!

Re: Hatsune disappointment

I think this year's best service awarded restaurant is Alameida. Although I love that restaurant I consider their service to be really bad. I'd rather vote for the canteen I'm used to as the attention they welcome clients with is faaaar more impressive.

As far as I'm concerned, I don't agree with almost any of TBJ's awards. Serve the people is not the best thai in BJ, Alameida not the best service, Flo definitely not the best French... Could go on and on...

Re: Hatsune disappointment

The Best Service award in our Reader Restaurant Awards actually went to Hatsune - Alameda won for Best Business Lunch and Restaurant of the Year.

Re: Hatsune disappointment

Really?
Sorry...
But I am quite sure I saw Alameida somewhere in the best service... maybe 2nd place?

Re: Hatsune disappointment

They did indeed get an Honorable Mention at the bottom of the page along with Aria. Our pick was the North Korean restaurant Hai Tang Hua for their fabulous singing waitresses...

Let's hear your pics -- would love some new recommendations!

Re: Hatsune disappointment

I think best service should go to Paul's steak and egg or Peter's texmex.

Of all the places i've been to in Beijing, not one came close to having the same level as those two. They're consistently great.

Re: Hatsune disappointment

I think the problem of bad service in Beijing is cause the waiters/waitresses have no incentive to serve well (theyre not working for tips, like in the states).

Re: Hatsune disappointment

Bringing up this topic again....

Saturday night was the third time we have been to hatsune in about 2 months, its also the third time in a row that they do not have any maodou (hairy beans) and dont have Asahi beer.

this time to add to the "Meiyou" list was... any cocktail with fruit in it and Sea Urchin.

The manager was also in a really foul mood and after sighing and giving us blunt unapologetic replies she dragged another waitress over to our table and began yelling at her in Chinese in front of us even calling her stupid.

we also ran into the owner of Hatsune last weekend at centro and he claims he is never at the restaurant anymore because he is busy working on the opening of his new creation on ChaoYang Park West Gate.. i guess this may be why the service is suffering but im tired of hatune!

is there another japanese restaurant which has not only great sashimi (like albacore tuna) but also creative rolls like hatsune?

Re: Hatsune disappointment

Meshiya has some interesting rolls, but they're more Japanese than California-style sushi. I do like the kimchi and tuna roll, though. I've heard Yotsuba is excellent for sashimi and am looking forward to trying it soon.

Edited to add Len Len is also quite good, with interesting, creative food (including sushi rolls, I believe, though I've only been there once).

In the past few weeks I've heard numerous complaints about Hatsune's service so these are not isolated incidents. It's really too bad.

Re: Hatsune disappointment

I've been to Hatuse only twice, I prefer Kagen.
First time was maybe two years ago,a dn the second time was just the other night. First time was ok, but Kagen is much better.
I was a bit reluctant to go the other night because I read all the complaints here, but I must say, it wasn't really that bad.
The only thing that was bad was the service (it is important).
It took them like 20 minutes to come and take our drink order, and then it took them another 30 minutes to bring us our drinks. Ok, we were having cocktails, but still. The same cocktail takes like 3 minutes to be made and brought to you at Kagen.
After that we made our order, and the witress asked if we wanted to have everything we ordered brought at the same time, we said "yes". Needless to say, it didn't happen. It only made us angrier cause she asked.
The food was also coming very slowly, so we spent like 3 hours there.
It was a very pleasant evening with our friends and the bad service can't really spoil it.
But, yes, the service was somewhat bad. But the food was good.

Oh, and Len Len, it's very nice, great atmosphere, and nice menu. Only they change it very often so my favorite spinach dish is not there anymore.
But, if you like japanese it's deffinitely worth a try.

Ceterum censeo Carthaginem esse delendam.

.

they make the drinks for Hatsune at Kagen and send them upstairs.
its the same owner and they share the bar. one of the reasons cocktails take so damn long... oooh but you have to try the coconut martini! heaven!

Re: Hatsune disappointment

i went for the 1st time on monday at hatsune

it was goood, me and my friend liked it a lot

it took a while for the martinis to come, but the waitress had warned us it would be a bit long (btw, the coconut martini was good, but not unforgettable, but tastes can differ Smile ...)

the food was really good, the location was very nice, the service was ... u know what, but not too bad

and the sushis with salmon and salmon skin were awesome Smile

i will definitely go back there, should also give a try at kagen then

btw, the thing at ritan south gate is "love the people", still under construction, it must have sth to do "serve the people"? are they all connected?

Re: Hatsune disappointment

There's this new Japanese restaurant at the Sanlitun Embassy area, by the side of the Liangmahe river. It's really good, the owner is a really nice Japanese guy, you can see him almost everytime you go there, he's very interesting to talk to, makes you laugh. Their service is really good too, once we ordered some BBQ fish, it took a little longer to cook, we really didn't mind to wait, but they gave us some really good dish for free . I don't think we even waited that long for the fish. Their BBQ fish are fantastic. And unlike Hatsune, it's a real Japanese style restaurant, it's just like in Japan. When they first opened, 90%of their customers are Japanese, now I think they have 30%-40% westners. The food is real nihon-aji(Japanese taste).

Hatsune is an American style Japanese restaurant. They have some tasty food. But I agree they don't have good service. They always give you this drink manu and when you order the drinks, they'd say, sorry, we can't make it now, because the bar downstairs is closed. And a lot of the times you do have to wait for a long time for the food to be ready. But I do want to get the recipes for their butter-beef-yaki and their sakegohan.

Re: Hatsune disappointment

Mika, could you please tell us the name of this restaurant? Address and/or telephone number might be helpful too.

Re: Hatsune disappointment

OK, the name of the restaurant is Reisen. The address is ??????????(Sanlitun Bei Xiao Jie 2# 1st floor) It's close to the Korea Embassy. Telephone: 010-64611498.

Re: Hatsune disappointment

The Chinese adress is messed up. But if you call them, they speak Chinese. The restaurant is not in That's Beijing yet. I think they opened in May this year.
