How popular is Cilantro in Chinese cooking?

My wife is from Sichuan, and she puts a large amount of Cilantro (香菜) in many of the dishes we eat at home.

How popular is Cilantro in Chinese cooking? Does anyone have any idea about this??

Re: How popular is Cilantro in Chinese cooking?

Cilantro is used as a garnish in a lot of dishes, just as parsley is used in western cooking. You know, sprinkle a bit on top just before serving. I find it is used more in southern Chinese cooking than in northern. Some people love the flavour; others can't stand it.

Hey! I went and have dinner (home cooked) with a family from...mmm...near Shanghai and we ate cilantro as a SALAD!!!
with a lovely vinegary dressing!

Never occur to me cos we use it like decoration or to give flavor in soups, oh! but it was brilliant!

Cilantro a.k.a. coriander a.k.a. Chinese Parsley...

I used to see huge bunches of the stuff at my nearby Jingkelong supermarket. Jingkelongs don't cater to lowai, so presumably there is a local market for the stuff.

I have also tasted it it food out of Xinjian province - both in leaf and seed form.

Re: How popular is Cilantro in Chinese cooking?

It's an indipensable ingredient in Chinese cuisine.

It matches well with other seasonings and cooking style in china.

Anyhow, not every chinese likes it.

Some never eat it. Some, like me, can have a dish that totally composed of
Cilantro.

But not sure whether it will work well on western food also.

Happy New Year!

It goes very nicely in salsa.

I think it's actually duel east/west herb, being native to both Asia and Europe.

As far as chinese cuisine goes, I use mostly with eggs and in hotpot. But it can garnish just about any dish.
