the reason has been confirmed by CNC and China Telecom
CNC has confirmed that due to the earthquake in Taiwai yesterday evening, the Fiber-Optic Cable couldn't work as usual. And this brought the inconvenience browsing the the website abroad, including some famous sites like IBM, YAHOO etc.
It's said they are trying to fix them up ASAP.
Here's the news from the domestic media:

Dont know what the reason is.
But i can confirm that nothing works for me.
Yahoo, gmail, some german sites, multiplayer of some games, messengers (MSN, Xfrie, Yahoo) all of problems.
So it seems to be more than just a banning.

Sorry for my limited English, anyway, i would like to have another try...
The reason is the cable undersea which transfer data between mainland and other parts of the world was broken off by the earthquake in taiwan. It's said there are 4 cables broken down.
So we have problems log in or browse website abroad, or use any IM program with service abroad.
CNC(the company of these cables) said they are fixing them up now.
Btw, i can use my MSN just now, around 4:50pm, however, seems it dies now...

did you say 4 cables snapped off? It is SIX! Someone surely is being frugal with the truth.

Well, on Panicday +1 everything seems back to normal. Email servers deliver, p2p moves data, and I can visit everything I want to visit. The use of Tor seems slower than usual and streaming radio doesn't play well- but if that's all I'm fine for now.
I guess yesterday a lot of people at CNC had a busy day flicking switches to sort out the mess. Good job.
Looks like armageddon will have to happen another day.

Also for me this mornings joy got a little damper. Since everybody is sitting in the office bandwith was of course going down. Maybe one should get used to working at weird times.
But most of the net is at least still usable for me, if not at glorious ADSL speed.
For proxy servers try these Korean ones. Maybe they work for you. More at http://www.samair.ru

There's obviously something wrong. Why is this post in the most viewed? Nobody ever posted anything since friggin' 2006. It's so dusty it makes me caugh.
