Get That Crap Outta My House: Air Purifiers and Dustbuster

Greetings forum dwellers... I'm a little new here and this is my first posted topic, but I'm not gonna throw a rose parade just because of that. Smile
Just saying hi, been reading the forum for past few days... I gotta say we got some interesting people here (in a good way, some in a bad )!
I'm lookin' forward to throwing in my two cents in every once in a while. I hope this place doesn't (or hasn't) degenerated into what most internet forums become. Thinking

Anyway... if you don't know that Beijing has a pollution problem I'm gonna smack you in the head for not knowing... I really want to look for ways to help improve what I'm breathing because for the past few months I've felt like I'm sixty years old when I'm coughing (no offense to any 60-year olds here). I've found topics here ranging from acupuncture or inhalers (which I'm considering, although I haven't been diagnosed for asthma, I'm come to doctors with suspicions of it), but how about some other methods, starting with what's at home?

So then, my questions are:
- How much are the air purifiers here (if they have any here)?
- Do you have any? Are they helpful at all?
- What brands are good, what stores would you recommend?
- Any dustbusters in Beijing? Or ANYWHERE in China? That would make my day, seriously.
- How do you get rid of dust and other crap that floats around in your home (which would normally end up in your respiratory system)?
- I have an area to hang laundry which is surrounded by windows... anyway to keep the dirt from not flying in? I've even closed most of them all the way or almost all the way! Love Struck

I hate to admit it, but I've finally given in to wearing those surgical mask thingees that the native Chinese people wear while they're outside. I can't step outside nowadays without coughing my head off...

Oh yeah, it would also be helpful if any of you guys (and gals) knew what "air purifier" and "dustbuster" were in Chinese, too.

Thanks for any answers you guys have!

My two feng's worth:
There is not a way to keep the crap out unless you hermetically seal your apartment. The crap is flying about in the air and although you might keep the larger particles out with a closed window, in our apartment you can see that the wind comes under the skirting board too. I can tell because there are little patches of dust on the floor where the wind comes in !!

Air purifiers might help but I feel that it is fighting a lost cause. The real solution is long-term stopping of the building work and coal-fired central heating (which the authorities are now changing to gas-fired). Of course, it is all over China, and not just here in Beijing so it is a nationwide problem of pollution.

As far as your coughing is concerned, you might like to consider how to make yourself less susceptible to the dust particles irritating your throat. It might be that you have an allergic reaction to a kind of dust or chemical. Boosting your immune system might help this or some kind of test to see if you do have an allergic reaction which is making the coughing worse.

Sometimes our physical reactions to things are triggered by previous experiences. As an example I have heard how asthmatics sometimes get worse asthma just be being in a stressful situation. As another example, my uncle used to get bad asthma if he saw a field of hay on the TV!

To quote H.L. Mencken...
The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

Re: Get That Crap Outta My House: Air Purifiers and Dustbuster

I have seen air filters in many appliance stores. They sell the appliance, which comes with ONE filter, but they do not sell replacement filters.

This has prevented me from buying one. Given the dust around here, filters might need to be replaced often.

Villa Lifestyles sells a brand called IQAir (advertised this month in tbjhome) ... I can't vouch for the brand but Villa Lifestyles is run by an expat who also sells things like Xmas trees and outdoor grills ..

from another thread:

I am guessing you are referring to the HEPA airpurifier. The biggest local brand is Yadu. Their stuff is on sale everywhere in Gome, Dazhong, Carrfour.

I bought directly from the company, better price and cash on delivery (same day). Service was excellent.

Everything is there. Unfortunately, the site is in Chinese and I don't know if they phone sales people can speak English.

Re: Get That Crap Outta My House: Air Purifiers and Dustbuster

1 word for you: IQair. Your cough will be gone soon, friend!

I cannot speak highly enough of them.

Our Yadu barely did anything to clean the air. It was like living in Los Angeles on the single worst day of the year....except for us here in China it's year-round. Villa Lifestyles can do a particle test if you're unsure how in/efficient your current air filters are, and/or how bad the air is in your home vs. outside. The Yadus have a hepa filter, but the design is such that the air just goes around the filter. It's crummy, really. I don't know what they go for these days, but ours weren't cheap, either. We paid around 200 USD but they didn't do practically anything.

IQ Air, on the other hand, is the single most effective air purifier on the market. No ionized air to worry about, no charged particles... just ultra Hepa technology, an outstanding air flow design and tons of activated charcoal to catch a bunch of gases & odors (even bathroom stench hehe).

Catches 99.97% of all particles. Bacteria. Viruses, Mold spores, dust, airborne particulates like soot, dust. Gases like the offgassing from new furniture, or traffic fumes, or remodeling fumes. IQ Air was the product of choice in SARS patient's rooms, and are still in use by 95% of the Hong Kong Hospital Authority.

These truly are awesome units. We were, all four of us, coughing all winter, and less than 24 hours after the filters (we bought 2)...NO coughing. Our son's eczema has even cleared up over these 3 weeks. AMAZING. CAN'T SING THEIR PRAISES ENOUGH. Thank you, Mikeal for introducing me to such a worthwhile product and impacting our health so positively!

Re: Get That Crap Outta My House: Air Purifiers and Dustbuster

Anyone have experience with IQair and know how much it cost to buy?

Re: Get That Crap Outta My House: Air Purifiers and Dustbuster

the IQ Air range on sale by villa lifestyles is like RMB10,000 to 12,000. They'll come and install it for you.

the best known local brand is Yadu, which has a top-of-the-line price of about RMB 5,000-6,000

Re: Get That Crap Outta My House: Air Purifiers and ...

You might have a bit of a jungle in your house if you do this, but its much less expensive than a machine. http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/kamal_meattle_on_how_to_grow_your_own_...

Re: Get That Crap Outta My House: Air Purifiers and ...

IQAir gets great reviews. I have a BlueAir purifier, but a friend has an IQAir and it helped his allergies a lot! He sent me this website with info on the IQAir because he was trying to convince me to buy one http://www.air-purifiers-humidifiers.com/iqair-air-purifiers.html
They are really expensive and the filters are costly which is why I went with BlueAir, but if you really need a good one, it's probably worth it.

Thanks so much for the TED Talk link Boco. I don't have any specific respiratory problems but often wake up with a stuffy nose and feeling lethargic so I think I'll get some of those plants and see if it has any effect!

Re: Get That Crap Outta My House: Air Purifiers and ...

+1 on the IQAir HealthProPlus - bought one for my bedroom and I absolutely love it. They aren't cheap and about $100/year for filters, but they filter to very small microns and are great for many sources of pollution.

Dust particles are heavy and often settle on to surfaces. A good HEPA filter vacuum is essential, air purifiers can't do everything.

If you can't get an IQAir or don't want to pay that much, check out something with a good clean air delivery rate. We put together this article that explains the positives and negatives of the clean air delivery rate along with a table of AHAM certifiled CADR models:

Stay away from ozone generators at all costs. Every health authority warns that ozone is great way up in the atmosphere but NOT at ground levels, it can damage the lungs and cause all sorts of problems. No amount of ozone is safe according to the California EPA an US Environmental Protection Agency.

Good luck in your search. There are LOTS of bogus claims from manufacturers out there so be careful! But I think if you went with IQAir, you could consider it a good investment for your lung health.

Re: Get That Crap Outta My House: Air Purifiers and ...

But what about in a damp climate? Specifically, would I have to have someone turn it on a day before we arrive, or would it have to be run all the time to make a difference. We live part of the time in Guangzhou, and my kids seem to cough even more there.

Re: Get That Crap Outta My House: Air Purifiers and ...

waitaitai,

The dampness may be causing an increase in dust mites, they love the humidity. It could also be a mold or mildew problem and if there are spores or mold particles in the air, that could be causing problems.

I am not exactly sure what your kids are allergic to so it is hard to know what technology to apply and if there is anything that will help their symptoms.

Re: Get That Crap Outta My House: Air Purifiers and ...

Thanks for the concern and interest. We are back in Beijing now (a decision made in no small part by the dampness/health issue) and I only have to battle the dust and pollution. Read your info carefully and we are going to go with an IQ.
Thanks again!

Re: Get That Crap Outta My House: Air Purifiers and ...

My personal experience is to always get a HEPA air purifier as these are proved to be the most quality one. Of course, they also cost a bit more than the one's without.

Re: Get That Crap Outta My House: Air Purifiers and ...

After using it for months and feel no difference, we decided to get rid of our Yadu air purifier (that local brand air purifier will only waste your money) and bought IQ Air Health Pro 250. I would say we really did a good investment, in the 1st night after we used it my sore throat just gone as well as my husband `s sinusitis sympthom.

So, invest a bit more (it cost around rmb 14,500 but we get 10% discount) and love your body & lung.

Expect the unexpected

Re: Get That Crap Outta My House: Air Purifiers and ...

Alen air purifiers are a great alternative to IQAirs. Alens are a third of the cost with nearly parallel efficiency and results. I notice such a difference in my house, and so does my husband, who is even more sensitive to the pollution than I am.

Alen is great; you can get purifiers for your whole house for the cost of one IQ. Plus, there is a lifetime warranty, and they handle customers service quickly and personally, no hotline plus some native English speakers. They are an American brand, just came to Beijing this year but have been in Shanghai and Hong Kong for years.
