The Mandarin Phrasebook ... worth 50 kuai?

so someone out there is buying these things, and certainly not for burning for winter fuel (coal is so much more efficient).

Could we have some feedback please? What's missing? What should be updated for Edition 2 (to be released sometime, oh, six years from now)?

Re: The Mandarin Phrasebook ... worth 50 kuai?

admin,
did you get my PM about the guide?

I got it two weeks ago and it has not let my murse since. I sneak a peek at it whenever I can and I've actually learned a few things.
50RMB is on the money considering the lonelyplanet one retails for 120RMb or so without even proper pinyin.
I think my only complaint might be that it is a little too extensive in the range of information it has. Shaving a few pages to make it smaller, more convenient to carry would suit me a bit more. but that is just my opinion

Re: The Mandarin Phrasebook ... worth 50 kuai?

I have two guides, one for the home and one that I take with me and for the office. It has some very good suggestions for surviving in Beijing and I agree with Badr that perhaps some condensing of the material would make it easier to tote around. Maybe you can add a mini dvd, so people can listen to the mandarin being spoken to get the right tones, etc. Is that possible?

Re: The Mandarin Phrasebook ... worth 50 kuai?

I WANT ONE!!!
I heard its really good!
Went to Wangfujing big big bookstore and couldn't find it!

Where can I get one?!

Re: The Mandarin Phrasebook ... worth 50 kuai?

I got my copy at the bookworm. They had plenty over there

Re: The Mandarin Phrasebook ... worth 50 kuai?

found the website!
Ta!

Re: The Mandarin Phrasebook ... worth 50 kuai?

I liked it so much, I swiped Badr's copy.

A bit too Beijing-centric to be a good all-purpose travel phrasebook, but I can see that when I move to BJ it'll be a lifesaver.

Echoing the size sentiments, though. It's just a tad too big to carry in a pocket comfortably.

Re: The Mandarin Phrasebook ... worth 50 kuai?

I luv it. Terribly useful collection of (Beijing) vocabulary.

I would like to learn the whole set. So my question is: is there any way of getting the vocabulary (as in the appendix) as an xls-file or whatever to put it into a vocabulary-learning-software?

I used mine on a recent trip to the interior and found it incredibly useful. I disagree on the size ... it fit in my bag just fine.

It's a troublesome world.
All the people who're in it
are troubled with troubles
almost every minute.
You ought to be thankful
a whole heaping lot
for the people and places
your lucky your not.

Re: The Mandarin Phrasebook ... worth 50 kuai?

Great book,

really useful for chinese language dunces like myself.

I really like the humorous elements especially the 'stick to the script' however one thing about the examples used... maybe they sometimes go a little too far out of their way to try to be funny? as a beginner student of mandarin it might be more useful to have a few more 'mundane' examples and a little less confusing vocabulary, I think the example which springs to mind is "I understand transsexuals' or something along those lines!

In any case definately worth the 50 kuai in my opinion!

Re: The Mandarin Phrasebook ... worth 50 kuai?

Indispensable!!!!

:!:

I think therefore I am.

Re: The Mandarin Phrasebook ... worth 50 kuai?

I tend to agree with the comments posted. I think it depends on what your goals are for language. Some of the phrases are certainly intended for more advanced learners of Mandarin. At the same time, the book has more character and flavor than the typical textbook which rehashes the same phrases time and again.

OP: The Mandarin Phrasebook ... worth 50 kuai?

Answer: no.

Re: The Mandarin Phrasebook ... worth 50 kuai?

It's not bad......... but I think it could use more on the picking up guide section.
