Great mexican food
Yesterday was "El fogoncito" mexican restaurant inauguration...and it was absolutelly awsome!
If you want to try real tacos al pastor, served by a real taquero, great tostadas de tinga and delicious spicy chilaquiles verdes...
mmmm! go there while they still have mexican chefs and service...the restaurant is at Wanda Plaza!
I'm not sure about the price as yesterday was free for us mexicans! 8-)
but from an expert point of view: it was pretty f-ing good!

Wanda Plaza is between Guomao and Dawanglu on the North side of the street.

Re: Great mexican food
Wanda plaza is where I work.
Between East 3rd and East 4th ring road.
Specifically in the space
EAST of 3rd Ring
SOUTH of Guanghua road (if you know Hatsune, it's there)
NORTH of Jianguo Road where Soho New Town (NOT jianwai soho) is
WEST of Dawang Lu (Blue Castle, Goldfield International, Sunshine 100)
Been eating there for the past week or two
Service was terrible at first but finally have got their sh*t together.
GO! while it's still cheap.

Re: Great mexican food
You're joking, right? Because those directions might get you to Wanda, but the won't get you to El Fogoncito.
If you are facing the Wanda Plaza from Jianguo Lu, its in the outer building, near the back on the left (west side, closest side to the 3rd ring road). There is still a lot of construction being done on this street and it looks deserted, but its down there on the right.
A friend and I went tonight and had a great time. Good food, attentive but not overbearing service, a margarita that seemed much better the second round than the first. And the staff from Mexico were eager to chat with the Spanish speakers in the restaurant (so not me, but pretty much everyone else!).
Nice spot and I'll definately be back . . . the prices are silly low at the moment! Go!

Went there, and it was great! Their rolled crispy taco was really yummy! Half-price too for a limited time!
Decor was nice and modern too, a big departure from the cheesy style Mexican restaurant places...

Re: Great mexican food
Went there tonight and was fairly disappointed. The decor was standard Beijing upscale cheese, the kitchen didn't have a single Mexican in sight, and the service was a little spotty. The tacos al pastor were tasty as hell, but the portions were really small, and the fajitas came w/o rice, beans, or anything (I had to order sides of everything that should normally come w/ fajitas, and they still felt incomplete). Margaritas were small and on the weak side, and chips and salsa should really be provided. Maybe I'm spoiled by the taquerias in San Francisco, but I left the place with my Mexican food urge unscratched.

Re: Great mexican food
How odd about the Mexican staff not being there. We met the chef and two others last night when the came to our table, and all the others, for a chat. Really friendly people, eager to meet people and swap stories! Perhaps they are off Sundays? Perhaps try it another night?
Margaritas were a little hit and miss last night too. The first were mostly tequila (we didn't complain!), but the second round was lovely.
I agree with you on the chips and salsa. That would have been a nice touch.
I really don't think that there is anything comparable in Beijing at the moment. Certainly not the Mexican Kitchen in Pinnacle Plaza, which is good but is definately a Tex Mex place, and the tortillas there are flour. Plus, they only come 4 or 5 at a time so you always have to order 10 kuai more to finish your meal.
And I do think, perhaps, your tastes have been spoiled just a tad by your experiences in San Francisco.

Re: Great mexican food
I was there on Saturday too. Great food. Yeah, small portions, but when it's made authentic, you take your time eating it and get full off smaller portions. Tequila kicked my ass as well. And, I saw atleast 4 Mexicans: Roberto, Jose, and some other guys. Overall, I'm not a huge fan of the new sterile feeling Mexican places, but this one's food and people won me over.
and wanda/and this place is about a 3 minute walk from walmart, if that helps anyone out in finding it.
Expect a review of it in next months thatsbj

I went to eat there last night and ended up doing a little sightseeing in the taxi before I finally gave up. Your directions could have been sufficient and my chinese skills and knowledge of the area poor, but can you please write down the address this time?
I see there has come some more information since about how to get there, but I want to be sure to arrive there next time.

Re: Great mexican food
Hello!
I just wanted to say that I'm more than happy to read about this news (I actually read it on Forbes.com!). When I was in Beijing I really noticed that there were no real Mexican food restaurants. I live in Monterrey Mexico right now (but moving to Beijing next month), and you can't find this restaurant, so whenever I travel to a city with a El Fogoncito restaurant, I don't miss the opportunity to eat some tacos al pastor.
I have some comments:
* El Fongoncito is a Mexican franchise. So, of course it isn't exactly real mexican food, but it's the best tacos you'll find anywhere (at least in Beijing)! I don't know if they are thinking in some tropicalization of the product to adapt it for Chinese market, because as you had describe it, it seems pretty much the same stuff they sell here.
* Of course you won't have the cheesy and tacky decoration of a "Mexican" restaurant! The lack of sombreros and mariachi shouldn't be a surprise... I guarantee you that most restaurants in Mexico aren't decorated that way! The same goes to those asking for chips and salsa, fajitas, etc., like you were on some Chili's. Really, we don't eat chips and salsa everyday! Nor tacos (which btw, tend to be made from pretty small tortillas). This is nothing personal on you, it's just a misconception.
My overall point is that I'm so happy that I'll be able to eat tacos whenever I miss home!

Thanks for this very interesting perspective meguminosa!
I don't suppose you know if they have mole on the menu? I've only ever eaten it once, and it was to die for!

Re: Great mexican food
Sorry Gracie, I don't remember seeing mole on the menu when I was there nor anything else close to being that elaborate. Additionally, I was not as impressed as some of the other posters to this thread, so don't set your expectations too high. Not horrible by Mexican food in Beijing standards, but compared to both Mexico and U.S. standards, I would definitely not go back for a second try. The one area that I agree with is that the staff (especially the non-Chinese) were very, very nice and accommodating, especially to the Spanish speakers.
Provecho!

Re: Great mexican food
great tacos at the (what used ot be there?) taco stand in front of John Bull - is it still there, I don't know - but the last time I was, yum yum yummy
alidesign
Re: Great mexican food
malmar: there's a new texan restaurant where John Bull use to be...and they offer tacos too, but El fogoncito's tacos and gringas are FAR superior! The pastor meat is real pastor!
Make sure you ask for extra cheese...as they've adapted their menu to Chinese clientele...(Thats what they told me...)
I went there last night...it was very very good! The mexican staff is great!

Re: Great mexican food
Was there today...Extremely small portions with nothing at all on the side. No Burritos on the menu....what I wouldn't give for a good LA style Burrito. A far far cry even from Taco Bell or what you might whip up with some Mexican supplies from Jenny Lou's.
meguminosa
Re: Great mexican food
As someone already said, no, they don't have mole... they don't sell it in the Fogoncito restaurants here, so I wouldn't expect to find it in China.
I was really amazed that you have tried it. Where did you taste it?
meguminosa
Re: Great mexican food
I think it's a question of perspectives... it's like some people claim to love Chinese food,, but when they go to China and try the real thing, they don't like it. You won't find anything like Taco Bell tacos in Mexico, that's for sure!!

Re: Great mexican food
not having had the benefit of having anything but what we in the US call "mexican food" , I'd like to know what the major differences are between what you find in the US in Mexican restaurants and the "real thing" ...
(not talking taco bell here but rather a sit-down taqueria or fancier spot)

Re: Great mexican food
Admin,
Not trying to be argumentative with another poster, but the Mexican food that you get in the U.S. is very similar to the Mexican food that is in Mexico. There are obviously some things that are 'gringo-nized' such as chicken nachos, breakfast burritos, a heavier emphasis on flour tortillas rather than corn and somewhat super-sized portions, but on the whole, the food is very similar.
The thing that I think is the most different is the fact that most of the Mex restaurants in the U.S. have a hodgepodge of dishes from different Mexican regions ranging from the Yucatan to the Baja as opposed to the restaurants in Mexico which tend to focus on a menu that highlights the food from a particilar region. Many restaurants in Mexico not only highlight food from a particular region, but more specifically, a particular dish (and slight variations of that dish) from a particular region. So Mexican restaurants in the U.S. seem to be a 'greatest hits' version of Mexico-with menus ranging from lime soup to ceviche and everything in between.
Unfortunately for those in the U.S., there are many very traditional Mexican dishes that have not migrated north of the border yet; i.e. mole, which most versions are a rich chocolate based gravy that they cook chicken in (sounds weird, but absolutely delicious in my opinion).
As for El Foguncito, after seeing many of the favorable posts, especially from the Mexicans, maybe I just caught it on a bad night; a night that they completely ran out of any seasoning. Still not sure if that is enough to get me back in there for a second try.

Re: Great mexican food
Hi all. This is my first post here, and it took this thread (which reveals both the best and the worst of this board -- I’ll explain in a minute why I say that) to bring me out of the shadows.
First, some context: I’m an American from New York but lived in Mexico City for two years just before moving to Beijing a few months ago. I was always a fan of what I thought was Mexican food in the States, but didn’t realize what I was missing until I lived in DF (Mexico City). I found that Mexican food in Mexico is not fajitas, chips and salsa, chimichangas and stuff like that. Nor are burritos common. There’s nothing wrong with any of that – it’s just not really Mexican. You can find it here, by the way, at places like Peter’s Tex Mex (BTW he opened a new branch in Lido area, a few doors down from Jenny Lou’s). DF has restaurants so good and so creative that they give Paris and New York a run for their money. For the most part, good food there (outside of the beach resorts) in almost no way resembles the Mexican phone found in the States. But that’s another story.
Anyway, tacos al pastor, which to Mexicans are as common and as beloved as, say, dumplings are to the Chinese, are what I miss most about Mexico. It’s often street food, although many restaurants also feature them. I was going through some serious withdrawal, and that’s why I was so excited to read about El Fogoncito on this board. (As meguminosa said, El Fogoncito is a Mexican franchise chain. It’s not quite as good as El Farolito, a competing chain, but I won’t be that picky in Beijing!)
So it’s a big plus that this board exists, and that people care enough to share great and useful news like this. On the flip side, it was really frustrating the first two weeks or so when none of the posters thought to include an address or phone number (c’mon, Wanda Plaza is not yet quite as well known as Tiananmen, but not knowing that, I tried to get there only to give up after being driven around in circles). Thanks to alidesign for thoughtfully including an actual address and number. Now I’ve gone there twice in the last week, and came out pretty well satisfied.
The key for thsese tacos is the meat, and the marinade for it, grilled on the spit and combined with the small, soft freshly made corn tortillas and topped with fresh cilantro, onion, pineapple, and with fresh green and red salsas and fresh limes for toppings. When everything’s fresh it’s a cheap and delicious snack.
Except for the lack of fresh limes, Fogoncito serves up some tasty stuff that transported back to Mexico for a little while. Based on what I did, here’s my recommendation: start with a glass of good tequila (this is the first place in Beijing where I’ve seen Herradura reposado – it’s for sipping, not shooting!), then order a plate of three tacos al pastor. Try all three salsas on it at once. When you finish that first plate, order another, and try a margarita with it (we had several margaritas over the course of two meals. They were a bit different each time, but after the 3rd we didn’t care), then get another plate after that if you’re still hungry. You can’t go wrong. Your taste buds will thank you.
Finally, they don’t tell you this for some reason (maybe they just like surprising you when it’s time to present the bill), but all food is half price through the end of February, meaning that a plate of three pastor tacos is 7.5 rmb, instead of 15, which at normal price is still a pretty good deal.
Finally finally, Wanda Plaza looks like it’s about 60% completed and the area could be lively when everything’s done. The cinema there was showing Casino Royale, so before tacos one night we also attended our first actual movie in a movie theatre since arriving in Beijing!

Re: Great mexican food
I like their food a lot but I guess I am too accustomed to Tex-Mex style salsa -- the big, thick, chunky kind with lots of tomatoes, which is entirely absent from El Fognito. The sauces they serve seem a bit thin to me.

Re: Great mexican food
I went there tonight after seeing it listed as That's Restaurant of the Week.
It was so good! The prices were really low, and the service was quick. We were there early, so that may have had something to do with it. Our favorite was the chicken domadas (sp?) They were on the first page, about halfway down the menu.
We also tried the chalupas, pastor tacos, and chicken & onion taco.
2 thumbs up!

Re: Great mexican food
had an excellent meal at fongoncito the first time a while back. recently, disaster, spolied meat, etc. 2 of 5 from our party got sick, stomach problems and all that comes with it. i even voted for this place as one of the best, but now i;d withdraw that and vow never to return..
