Some friends and I are looking for figure drawing classes, or simply some model workshops. I would think CAFA or Qinghua would have them, but I wasn't able to find anything on their sites.
The major problem in Beijing is that, there aren't enough professional nude models. So, they get village people to nude model, and they have absolutely no idea about art nor nude modeling.

Nude models do not need to know art, they just need to sit still. Check out the classics-do you think all nude models on the paintings were artists?
Village people or beijingers, when they are naked, it does not matter!
For example, when you do gesture drawings, you need to change your postition very quickly, about every 30 seconds. You need to know how to make different positions which can help artists to learn human muscle movements etc. If you want to just paint a classical piece where a person is standing still, then, you don't exactly need a professional model(although standing still, or sitting still can be very exhausting, from my experience of modeling). But, if you want to learn the basic of figure drawing then it's definitely better to have a professional nude model who knows what he's doing. Basic figure drawing classes are for you to learn the muscle movement, proportions of human body, and how to show a movement on a flat piece of paper.
I think you can be a good nude model if you have an appreciation to art.
I had a model once in Beijing, she was from a village. She was embarrassed and scared to do different positions while modeling. I was doing my gesture drawings, and she wasn't creative enough to show different movements, which ended up being a disaster. I had to show her how to do it, it still came out awkward.
look at the works of Degas, Monet, Van Gogh, Delacroix, Matisse, even Michelangelo or Da Vinci and others-who do you think posed for them? Streetwalkers, cleaners, seamstresses, cabaret dancers, farmers, wild village girls -for Gauguin.... So Chai, maybe it is not the model's fault if your experience was not good....
I'm not talking about those master pieces which takes months and months to paint. I was talking about gesture drawings which is a basic for figure drawing.

When you take a figure drawing class for the first time, you don't sit down and start painting a person. You start off with weeks of gesture drawings to get the hang of proportions and movements.
You don't need an appreciation of art to be a model, but you do have to be comfortable with being able to be naked, and do it. and in that same token, you don't need to have a professional model, but just someone who doesn't mind getting naked, and moving as needed.
Proverb: A bad dancer blames it on the shoes (actually, it's a Russian proverb that says "a bad dancer blames it on his balls", but I don't think the translation goes over well!).
Professional or not, the important thing is finding a space with good light that regularly hosts these things, thats the important thing.
I don't think it takes years of training to be a good model, but there is deffinitly a difference between a good model and a bad one. The person has to know how to keep a pose, know what they can and can't handle, etc.
No one seems to have responded about the original question. . i am an artist that has just arrived in Beijing and i would love to do some life drawing.. are there any clubs community groups or universitys that offer life drawing in beijing? I am going to go out to 798 and make some inquiries but any info would be helpful..thanks
My boyfriend occasionally attends the Monday night life drawing sessions at "The Hutong" (that's the name of the place- it is a little learning center in a hutong in Chaoyang somewhere.)
He has complained about some of the models, though- things like them getting out of position during a gesture drawing session to answer their cellphones. Some are better than others, tho, so it depends on who is there on a given night.
The Hutong sessions are the only ones he has found so far, tho- so if anyone else learns of any, post it here and share!
I have danced all my life and have posed for art before, though I have never done life drawing. If someone could get enough artists together, I would be willing to pose for the class.
I am female, 183cm, and foreign.
Good morning. You posted nearly one year ago your interested to work as a life model for artists. Are you still available for this work? If yes, let me know your conditions for 2 hours sessions. Thank you for your answer. Jivan

Re: Figure drawing in Beijing
Back home alot of the models I had were artists, since alot of artists like to try and understand what a model goes through.
But in any case, it can't be hard, because there is lots of art here. All those artists need models.
