Any updates on local shops stocking masks for pollution protection?
I'm not talking about disposable ones, rather -reusable high tech cycling ones
.
I think every kind of masks which appearing in chinese market can be recycled, only condition is u need to hand over them to a special department, for instance: A hospital, after u use them.
I have a Respro mask for the dust storm brought from the US but I have seen it in local bike shop (sold out in a hurry, which is why I bought it when I went back). You can probably print out a copy of the product picture and take it to a big bike shop to have them order it for you. Or have someone order it and ship it to China (probably cheaper).
I don't wear the mask outside the dust storm, it draws way too much attention.
Whether it draws attention or not I think when the air is as polluted as this it is a smart option(the API index today is at 151-171 ! In other cities people would be warned to stay indoors!)
Actually, perhaps if more people were seen wearing masks it might raise the consiousness levels of the populace enough for them to start asking questions about what the government is doing to improve air quality in the city.
I know many people claim that the air quality in Beijing is improving, but i simply don't believe that's true. In eight years here i have never before woken up to an apartment filled with stinking smoke like i did last tuesday night. OK -so environmental factors surely play a part in that cloud cover keeps the smog 'lidded' in the city, but the burning eyes and throat and headache i experience on 'foggy' days is making me seriously consider getting out. Is there lower grade coal being burned at present??
Good, I have never seen guys in that stupid mask in Beijing yet, except some local women wear some horrible veils in big windy day...
yeah, real men just suck it up and get lung cancer.
f***ing pussies, caring about their health.
f***ing Amin, caring about our feelings. we all will get lung cancer because we dont wear stupid mask....All Chinese should go to hellllllllll......let me say....all stupid you couldnt bear here, go f-ing helllllllllllllllllll...........
F************I dont have time to talk more at work...
To quote H.L. Mencken...
The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.
I offered my personal experience and opinion regarding the face mask by addressing a specific inquiry by the original poster, I hope he considered that information useful. Sniping remark addressed to me as a third person offered value to no one.
For almost 20 years, I have refrained from posting on any BBS or discussion forum on a regualr basis becasuse the ease which people will type words that would otherwise considered rude if spoken outloud. I started participating in thatsbj because most of the discussions have been practical and civilized in the forums I use. Sadly, this thread has fallen into the same trap I've seen in countless other places.

Re: face masks
well, I can't remember ever reading any thread more than 3 posts long that have remained practical or civilized on here..
but I think we can blame this one on "Mom" (glad she's not mine) who was happy that she hasn't seen guys "in that stupid mask"
Then she thought admin said that "all chinese should go to hellllll"
and then she thought being bitter was the same as "biting someone"
In case you're wondering, women with psychoses are kind of a hobby of mine! Makes for entertaining times!

Re: face masks
Post-use dissection of dust filter. I used it for the past two mornings, walking outside. 4 hours total usage time.
I bought these filters for 16 kuai each at Beijing United. They can, for sure, be found cheaper elsewhere and if you buy in bulk.
1. At left: 3M™ Particulate Respirator 8210, N95, New.
At Right: 3M™ Particulate Respirator 8210, N95, after I used it for a total of four hours over two consecutive days in Beijing.

2. Filter cut in half.

3. First outer gauze layer peeled away, exposing main exterior filter.

4. Main exterior filter cut away, showing second layer.

5. Second layer peeled away to show inner layer. Thankfully, looks clean -- so at least the major shmutz didn't make it to my lungs.

CONCLUSION: WEAR A F*ING MASK
