"You will start speaking when the time is right"

I have seen this statement (or similar) written several places on the net refering to not forcing oneself to start speaking Mandarin. What do you think of this statement?

I just arrived, and will stay for <1 year. Studying Mandarin wil be my only priority here. Should I force myself to speak, or wait until my vocab increases, and my pronunciation improves?

Thanks....

Force yourself to speak every chance you get. Trial and error my friend - you need to take advantage of every second you have while in China in order to improve your Chinese.

Of course you should force yourself to speak. The more you speak the better, the more natural using the language will feel, it's also the best way to learn vocab, you'll remember a lot better if you used the word in a practical situation as oppossed to just writing it down on a piece of paper. Don't worry about making mistakes, that's how you learn. Good luck!!!

Speak, speak and speak.... Talk to the lady at the reception/in the lift, the cashier, the cute little girl beside you, the spitting guy opposite, ... just speak otherwise little progress will be made during that year.

Of course, makes sense. Thanks!

Re: "You will start speaking when the time is right"

Yes, it makes sense, I dont know what I was thinking....

Now that you mention it, even today I told the elevator girl my floor number in Chinese. Even this single spoken word from me got a zai jian out of her. This is a girl that never said anything to me before. So I should know that speaking can be constructive.

Yes I feel silly, of course I have to speak. Enough said, thanks!

Re: "You will start speaking when the time is right"

'cept you can't have much of a conversation if you each cannot understand each other.

Drinks or no drinks, I still have no clue what they're saying to me.

Re: "You will start speaking when the time is right"

Every time I am taught a new word or phase that I'd like to memorize, I make every effort to use it as soon and as often as possible - can make conversations somewhat contrived but it works! I've found the best people to practise on are the men guarding the doors of your apartment blocks (if you have them  ) - they work long boring hours and many like nothing better than having a good old chinwag about nothing much at all. The Chinese residents in our block (mainly rather snooty) probably think I'm trying to pick him up but I don't care - my Chinese is getting better every day because of it.

Re: "You will start speaking when the time is right"

Actually, I find that Chinese people are *really* eager to help you out and practice your Chinese with you... all it takes is for you to start the conversation. Also, I find that once you've started a conversation relationship with the elevator lady/desk clerk/guard in your building, it makes leaving and coming home a lot more fun, since even if you're busy or they're busy, a quick smile... it just makes the day better.

Plus, its great for the conversation skillz. Wink

The phrase not force yourself too much means you should not push yourself when you are stuck and keep working hard, then one day it will work out naturally. But if you don't even start, how can you say don't force yourself? Especially when referring learningChinese, if you don't force yourself open your mouth, how can you say you learn it?

Re: "You will start speaking when the time is right"

Speaking is not really that important and doesn't do too much to the learning process. It's fun to try it though. But just fun.

You will not learn anything from speaking. That is, because, you can only speak what you know. But reading or listening will confront you with new words all the time.

Saying that, even though you don't learn anything by speaking, it can be a great confidence booster. Do it anyway. I enjoy it too.

Re: "You will start speaking when the time is right"

Yeah, why waste time speaking? If you concentrate only on reading, after just 10 years you'll be able to speak Chinese as brilliantly as all the Chinese students here speak English!

"Do you like Chinese dish?"
"Oh, your spoken Chinese is very standard!"
"You're very great"
"That child is very lovely!"

Re: "You will start speaking when the time is right"

同志, you don't have to "waste time" speaking. There is still plenty of speaking opportunities in the bus, subway, taxi, McDonalds, the noodle shop.

You don't have to focus on speaking, but also shouldn't avoid it and try it just for the fun of it. But maybe "my time is right" already.

Re: "You will start speaking when the time is right"

You can't learn to swim if you don't get in the pool. Seriously, that's the stupidest piece of advice I've ever heard about language acquisition. It reflects a crippling preoccupation with face-saving. The only way to learn anything is to try it and accept correction. Sure, at first there will be times that people don't realize you're speaking Chinese. But when they at least recognize the language, that IS progress.

Re: "You will start speaking when the time is right"

The title of this thread actually sounds more like a Jedi Novice Code than an advice on learning a language. How the frak do you want to learn a language if you wait until you feel good enough to speak ? That's retarded. Learning a language is not about making you feel comfortable. You have to feel the pain ! Get out of your comfort zone.

Speaking is not acquisition. Reading and learning is. Speaking is just practice, which is useful with some knowledge.

Have you heard of Steve Kaufmann? Read #6:

Steven speaks 12 or so languages and I trust his wisdom more then some unfounded forum entries.

Another person to model on is Kato Lomb, another great linguist which acquired a language mainly by reading - starting often with kids books for local kids. Amazing stuff to copy.
