Harbin Wildlife Park
The world's biggest breeding centre for Siberian tigers encourages visitors to buy domestic animals that will be fed live to the tigers.
Special vending flaps are fitted on the tourist buses to allow visitors to feed chickens to the waiting tigers.
A live chicken can be purchased for £2.60, while a cow costs £100.
The authorities at the park say the tigers are being trained to be released back into the wild and argue that the fees charged for the live animals are used to support the park.

Re: Harbin Wildlife Park
If the tigers are being trained to be released back in the wild, doesn't the association between humans riding around in tourist buses and food pose a potential danger in the long term? Aren't many of these huge animals going to be thinking "wow, there is a good source of food" every time they see an automobile or a person? Doesn't sound like conservation is the number one concern of the park officials.

This is true. Whilst i cant say i have a problem with live animals being fed to tigers (it's nature fufuksake) this to me just seems like another exmple of chinese people not caring about animals at all. Look at the cute fluffy tiger, lets feed it! Is there an animal rights movement of any description here in China? I'd be sincerely shocked if there was...

Re: Harbin Wildlife Park
I went to the wild tiger park in Harbin during Spring Festival. During the trip, besides live chicken, they also threw a sheep into a bunch of tigers and lions. There was such a violent fight for the sheep. It's so cruel but also impressive. That's the most attractive part of the trip for sure. Some foreigners are on the bus also. They looked really excited, too. I dunno whether it's good for tigers or not but it's just a semi-wild park. Only tigers live there. So you have to feed them with either dead meat or live animals. For the park, even during spring festival, I didn't see many tourists. If they don't think of a way to entertain the tourists, maybe they can't even make the ends meet.
And I can tell the tigers are so wild and clever because after a while they figured out we were trapped in the park(Yes, that's true. Our bus got trapped in the hole under the snow and couldn't move out). They started to pee on the bus to label that's their prey and beat the bus by their tails. It is said if we didn't get saved in the end, the tigers might figure out how to open the windows which are not protected by iron stuff at all.
Of course, if it can a real wild park like those in south America, that would be really cool.
He is peeing on the bus...

Re: Harbin Wildlife Park
Yeah, the tiger park should have a warning sign for families with small children.
I wasn't interested in buying a chicken or goat to feed the tigers, but I got stuck on a busload of Chinese tourists who were totally entertained. That's the problem for me. I am not so naive to think animals aren't killed to feed the tigers, I just feel it is disrespectful of the sanctity of Life to see such slaughter as entertainment.
My whole day was ruined by the sight of the terrified chicken as it fought for it's life...and lost.

When I was about 6, me and my dad went to the Beijing Zoo. They had this huge pit with alligators in it. You could buy little chicks and throw them in.
Ah, good times.
