What do you mean by old city? Xi'an has its city walls still standing, but that's because they've been restored. Even inside the walls, Xi'an is much like any big Chinese city. If you do go, the terracotta warriors are cool, the museum is good, the Muslim quarter is interesting and there are some temples and stuff around to visit.
Harbin for the ice lantern festival in January, if you can brave the cold.
Qingdao for a seaside holiday - good seafood and interesting architecture.
Chengdu for its laid back atmosphere and the nearby panda preserve.
Kashgar for an I'm-not-in-China-anymore feeling (with a side trip to Lake Karakul).
A 3 day visit is enough for any of these cities.
Chengdu is the place for you. 3,000 years of history on display.

attraction Chengdu has to offer you. It is just one of many.

Basic rule about business in China : at first, laowai has the money and the chinese has the market knowledge ; then the chinese has the money and laowai the market knowledge :)
Suzhou is really pretty with the canals and gardens, and with Shanghai so close you can make it a day trip from there. I haven't been to Hangzhou yet, but I will some day.
u can go to Kashgar.it is the biggest resdential city of ethnic uygur people.thy are all muslims.it`s very different from other cities in china.although it`s a bit far,but i think it`s worth going.
HK, Macau and SHanghai are big enough for you, I would travel around some smaller cities like Lhasa, Tibet. It's more interesting to travel or observe something which is so non-Chinese.
go to datong. it's very under-rarted but there are some excellent sites including the hanging temple, and the buddhist caves. both very cool. you can fly there 4 times a week for about 260yuan each way, or take a very comfortable bus for 4-5 hours (90 yuan), or take a 6 hour train.
Just reading a Guardian article......... seems really true though. Really seen this place change in the last 14 years, even though the older China wasn't so whizz zoom bang...... it was unique and unquestionably China. I'm all for them preserving older buildings/areas and banning further land use until they tear a few monstrosities down and take a good hard look at some of the garbage that foreigners and Chinese alike have been allowed to weld together.

China has become the land of 1,000 identical cities, a senior government official has warned in an outspoken attack on the country's headlong rush towards modernity.
I belive that xi'an is surely a good place for visit. unfortunately i have not got the chance to go now. BTW. yunnan, where lijiang and xianggelila lie in, is another wonderful place for visit. enjoy your time.

It depends on if you want to see a real Chinese city or not. Stay inside the Great Wall and south of Beijing. Dongbei is not China. It is an invasion point for Han people with Russian style buildings. Xizang and Xinjiang are not China but a myth of Chinese dominance over weaker people and of course another invasion point for Han people to spread their influence. There is only one true Chinese city left and it isn't in China. That being Taipai. Chang Kai-shek wanted to build the perfect chinese city. He failed of course but he did not come far from it.
If you wish to stay in China and see REAL Chinese cities visit Zhenjiang or Nanjing or Nanning or Guilin. Chengdu and Chongqing are great cities and the people are wonderful but they are still examples of Chinese rebuilding after the communists destroyed the country.

Hangzhou!!!
Just hang out right there on the West Lake.
A must see in China
i agree with ducky...
it's a pretty huge lake... so i strongly suggest hopping on one of those carts to scout the various sites around 西湖 (West Lake) before venturing on foot... each area has its unique features, so jump off wherever is most appealing to your senses.
also, many people overlook the quieter Hangzhou Garden... locals would come here for picnics and to escape the noisy tourists... this vast garden is situated right across from the lush, forresty part of the lake where you can hold BBQ picnics...
i even took a picture with my camera phone:
the lake is in the backdrop of this serene corner of the park... good luck finding it and don't forget to bring your picnic basket!
