Visa run - Exit to Mongolia....Help wanted
I need to leave China to get an entry/ exit stamp to extend my F visa. I want to do this cheaply.
I've found that there is a daily train to Er Lian, the Inner mongiolian/ mongolian border town. This ticket costs 130 Kuai.
It costs 250 kuai for a Mongolian visa. So...
To go there, cross the border, cme back in, and catch the train home, will cost in total 500 kuai...by far the cheapest way.
Why isn't there a lot of information to be found on this run? Am i mistaken somewhere? If so where?
Anyone done this before? It is possible to just cross the border, then come back?
Any information is welcome.
Thanks

Re: Visa run - Exit to Mongolia....Help wanted
If you can get such cheap train ticket and also the VISA only for 250 so it's okay. You have also consider, that you have to look for a hotel in this area to stay one night, the price is around 150 RMB.
Everything else is correct! And also look to get a "sleeping" seat, it is only about 80 RMB more, but more convenient for travelling.
Another option is to take a bus to Er Lian, which will be cheaper, but takes much more time.

Re: Visa run - Exit to Mongolia....Help wanted
126 Kuai is the price for the hard sleeper.
Thanks for the confirmation. I'll be looking into this more.
I know at the HK border, you can just walk through and then come back. I guess thats the same at the mongolian border, no?
Anyone done this trip before?

Re: Visa run - Exit to Mongolia....Help wanted
Based on my "sources", the trip will be as follows:
- Reaching railway station in Er Lian
- infront of the railway station one street full of small cars, who are waiting for you
- one of this cars will drive you to the first Mongolian town and back to Er Lian
They will charge you for this 2 hours trip about 160 RMB.
But it seems to be, that you will not find a train back at the same day. And nearly nobody will understand English language there. (only Chinese, Mongolian and Russian language)

Ja, something or some such.
I didn't know you were being fan of those Woody Allen movies, brother Quadbert. Maybe for the sequel to "Three in a Yurt" we can be finding some way for having an "on location" shoot in this border town you speak of. We can use some similar style to one of Woody's movie.
For the working title perhaps "Three in a Yurt II: Erlian Express", or maybe "Burt and some Flirt in the Yurt" for having more direct approaching.
I am appreciating your imput for this matter Quadbert, send PM as usual.

Oh, and by the way Alleneque, you are appearing to be quite nerdy in that picture.
I am suggesting maybe for lifting some weights can make you apperearing less of a girly man.

Re: Visa run - Exit to Mongolia....Help wanted
Woody, you are correct in that you only need to cross the border, grab a Coke and waltz right back through. You do not have to stay overnight.
The issue may arise, however, that you cannot get a train back on the same day as another poster suggested. If that's the case, you need to factor in the cost of a one-night hotel stay.

Re: Visa run - Exit to Mongolia....Help wanted
So, next step towards perfecting this visa/ exit run...
Where do you get the sleeper bus from Beijing to Er lian?
It's going to be perfectly possible to get a train one way and a bus back...even if an overnight stay is required, it may still be the best option timewise.
Any help...where to catch a sleeper bus from Beijing to Er Lian?
Cheers

Re: Visa run - Exit to Mongolia....Help wanted
I might try this, too... looks like it can be done in just over 24 hours. I need to wait until August, though.
K23: Leave Beijing at 7:45a, arrive in Erlian at 8:37p
K24: Leave Erlian at 12:57a, arrive in Beijing at 2:04p
Fooking brilliant... looks like an overnight stay isn't necessary. Just take the train both ways. You've got 3 hours to cross the border, turn around and come back.
To do this, though, you would need to pick up a visa for Mongolia before you go. I doubt that they have a 24-hour visa office there.

I could be wrong, but I remember seeing where US citizens can get an automatic visa on arrival.

Re: Visa run - Exit to Mongolia....Help wanted
@Allen
the border at Erlian is NOTHING like HK, also the way i have gotten across was in a Jeep and train, It didnt seem like walking across was an option... when we got to customs it was maddness, think pushing yelling no queues... the whole bit. On the train to UB customs just came on with us. I was just going one direction but a turn around could be done. Good Luck.
@gdbill
I think Americans can stay in mongolia for 30 days with just a passport, unless this changed since last year. but Allen might be something else...

Re: Visa run - Exit to Mongolia....Help wanted
Oh yeah there will be people waiting to take you to the long distance bus station once you clear chinese customs...if you decide to go with a bus. Not much cheaper than train 150-220 depending on how badass you are.
Allenesque
Re: Visa run - Exit to Mongolia....Help wanted
OK, thanks everyone so far.
I still information on long distance sleeper buses to perfect this route. Thanks for the train times Jeff, your right that if someone is looking for a cheap and fairly quick exit/ entry this is the way to do it.
If the border at Er Lian IS a pain in the arse, then perhaps three hours to do the round trip from the train station to the border and back won't be enough. So, two bits of info needed....
Is the border at Er Lian open 24 hours or when are crossings allowed?
Where to catch a long distance bus from Beijing to Er Lian.
Thanks again.

Re: Visa run - Exit to Mongolia....Help wanted
hey guys - Just letting you know I recently did this trip (as a visit to mongolia, not a visa run, but experience still useful?)
We caught the K23 train to Erlian, cost 140 yuan (only option is softsleeper), bought ticket from main railway station in beijing the night before we left with no problems. Train arrived in Erlian at about 8.30pm (left beijing around 7am) - while onboard we were able to upgrade our ticket to a through ticket to Ulan Baator for $33 USD.
On the way back we caught an overnight softsleeper train to Zamyn Uud (Mongolian side of the border), cost a bit over 130 yuan (booked tickets about 2 days before the trip, there is a slower, cheaper train, but was already booked out).
Arriving at Zamyn Uud at 8am on Sunday morning, we found out that there were no trains going over the border until Thursday, so we headed out to the parking lot to find transport. No minivans to be seen, we ended up in a Jeep with other people - the drivers didn't seem to speak Chinese, only Mongolian. Jeep cost 80 yuan. Jeep took us to the Zamyn Uud side of the border, we went through exit procedure, then back into the jeep, over the border, and through Chinese immigration (they charge 5 yuan). Then back into the jeep, who drives you to wherever you want in Erlian (Chinese side of border). The actual crossing of the border took about 4 hours.
We were unable to get train tickets, think it was because there were no trains until Thursday. Ended up on a 10 hour (which stretched to 13 hours) sleeper bus to Beijing, 180 yuan. Bought the ticket about 4 hours before departure, with no problems.
Potential problems with using this option as a visa run basically stem from the train times - from my research, it appears there are only 2 trains per week (3 in summer), and they might not meet up when you want. Busses seem to be daily (although more expensive, and much more cramped than the train). Hotels in Erlian seemed to be plentiful (another traveller said you can get single rooms for about 35 yuan per night near the train station). Apparently the border also closes overnight and for lunch? (not sure about this one).
One more thing, when we crossed the border into China, we were handed a flyer which said:

Re: Visa run - Exit to Mongolia....Help wanted
Is there any train straight to Ulan Baator.
How long do you have to wait for the visa?
bobsi18
Re: Visa run - Exit to Mongolia....Help wanted
Yes, the trains that go to Erlian also go straight to UB - I think the going rate for these is about $110 USD (soft sleeper), visa took 4 or 5 working days.

Re: Visa run - Exit to Mongolia....Help wanted
bobsi18- THANK YOU!
So according to that flyer, I may be able to simply go to Erenhot (Erlian) to get a new visa and not technically leave the country??? If that's the case I think that place will get a LOT of business in the near future if we can do it for a few hundred yuan instead of a few thousand! I am very excited right now, I need to get mine done in the next couple weeks and money is very tight.
What did I hear elsewhere about americans not being able to get visas "on arrival"? What does that mean, like I can't just show up and get one? What's the other option, making a lunch date in advance?
(Really, what does it mean? I'm not just arriving in china, I've lived here a year, but I'd be just arriving in Erlian....)
I haven't found any info about this online, I guess it's so new no one has started talking about it yet.
More info would be GREATLY appreciated, and if I do it I'll tell everyone how it went.

oh, and did any of you guys who were contemplating this trip actually do it? Can you tell us about it?
And I don't understand what you mean by only needing a stamp... "just grabbing a coke and going back".... don't you have to get a whole new visa, like actually go through a process and get a new big sticker for your stickerbook?
I'm getting confused.
Please someone help the little girl understand.

Re: Visa run - Exit to Mongolia....Help wanted
Possibly... But I'm not really sure! I have a multi entry visa, so getting back into the country wasn't an issue for me at all. I think what they're aiming at is doing visa applications on the spot, when you come over the border from Mongolia.
If you were to get there, and they won't process you (because you haven't left the country), you could always just catch a jeep over the border to Zamyn Uud, and straight back again... Again, not really sure, there's not going to be alot of talk about this one until it's actually been done I think.

Re: Visa run - Exit to Mongolia....Help wanted
Hi,
Just wanted to update.
I went to Ulaan Baator for my visa a couple weeks ago. I figured I'd try to do it in Erlian, but if not, go on to Ulaan Baator even though it would take twice as long. If anyone has more questions about the Ulaan Baator run, feel free to ask.
The train arrives in Erlian about 8:30pm, and it's dark, so there's not really much going on there very easily.... no one handed me any flyers, the only people other than the travelers on my train were a bunch of taxi drivers out front and a basic staff in the train station.
My only official new input:
THERE IS a DESK in the train station called "PORT VISAS", so there is something official there (I thought maybe the flyer coulda been from some shady agency, but there is a real little dept at the station)... but it was closed and dark and no one could answer any questions about it. So I have no idea WHO is allowed to get them, what it involves, etc. And there's not exactly a handy website about it.
Sorry I couldn't get more info for future visa-runners. I tried, but I wasn't going to walk the dark lonely streets of erlian (yes it had a dark lonely atmosphere) looking for a hotel, only to find out I can't get a visa there for some reason, then wait another day for a train to Ulaan Baator anyway.... and with the jovial crowd of foreigners on the train to Mongolia, I just figured "what the heck, I've come this far, go all the way to freakin' mongolia!"
So I cut an extra two days of work and spent 3 days in Ulaan Baator.
Didn't go on any desert treks, not enough time, I was already playing hooky for a week, but I had a nice mellow time in the city and I'd like to go back for a more adventurous time with my son next year.
Oh, I put video of a Traditional Mongolian Show I saw on You tube.
Look up kw07kw if you're interested in seeing throat singers, contortionists, horsehead fiddles, FREAKY WEIRD dancers. (not too freaky, but ... well... weird enough to make me laugh at times and wonder if I was watching an episode of I Love Lucy where she makes up some bizarre dance that's supposed to be ridiculous. Only these in Mongolia are real.)
Hmm.

BTW....
I'm kinda sad.
I wanted to be... like... a pioneer, and be one of the first people to get a visa some cool slick new cheap way in Erlian.

I hope my confirmation of an official Port Visa desk at the train station can be a helpful piece in this puzzle for someone else in the future... *sniff sniff*...
Oh, and the embassy in UB is annoying - only open MWF 9-12 am. But you MUST get online outside at like 8:30. If you get online like 9:30, it will be 11:30 by the time you reach the inner door and they will shut it in your face for the next 2 days.
AND..... ugh I hated this. AT 8:30 when i got online there were maybe 8 people sparsely in front of me.... as time went on, their friends started coming and making the line 3 times as thick until it was a chinese-style pushing mob at the door (almost, not quite as bad). Get there EARLY. Really. 8am and you can waltz out smiling past all the grumbling people who got there at 9.

I'm confused.
So with this option, can I literally just go to Erlian, find someone to take me over the border and I assume there's passport control at the border which allows me to buy my visa there, correct?

I'm in contact with someone who is doing it RIGht NOW, and he said "americans can't get visas at the border."

I don't know what nationality you are, but that's all I heard. He continued on to Ulaan Baator, the capital and only(?) place in Mongolia with a Chinese Embassy. I'll tell him to post here when he gets back so everyone can hear his direct experience.
I can see this will be a slow-going process, learning about this Erlian thing... anyone who goes in the future, maybe you can get a brochure with details or requirements, or somehow get as much info as possible for others.
Whoever WILL be able to get visas in Erlian will be very lucky, I'm curious to see who can.

Re: Visa run - Exit to Mongolia....Help wanted
Ok, let me see if I've got this straight.....
We get a train to ErLian....
We transfer to another train, then head to UB....
We get there, then go to the Chinese Embassy, and apply for a Visa...
Wait around 3 days....
Come back to ErLian.......
Go through Customs.....
And back to Beijing.......
Is that correct?
Now, what i'm wondering is, where the heck (and how long will it take/cost) to get a visa to actually get into Mongolia in the first place?
And do we have any update yet on who can use the 'Visa Port'?
The Batman needs your help here people. Any info (or even just a telephone number of an office in ErLian!) would be appreciated.
Peace. HC

Yes Batman, you have the run-down correct (though it can be the same train all the way through, you just get off for 4hours in Erlian while they change the wheels). Please note the details in my previous posts about the chinese embassy's limited hours, so you can try to show up at the right time.
If money is tight, there are buses going there too, for cheaper. And in Ulaan Baator you can find cheap hostels where you'd share a room for like US$5 a night. I stayed in the UB Guesthouse. Cheap, clean enough, and they offer deals to take you into the desert or they can point you to other activities (though anyplace can do that).
Hostel, train ticket office, money exchange place, chinese embassy all spoke english fine. You will NOT use a word of chinese there. I have no idea why I thought I could, I guess I was just in another world.
If you want to try calling the port visa place, call the Erlian Train station. It's inside there, so surely they can hook you up.
