Beaches in Europe
Excellent and quiet beaches can be found near Malaga, Huelva and Almer in the south as well as near the coasts of La Manga, Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and Euskadi. If you do enjoy extremely developed resort towns, there are plenty of crowded beaches on the Costa de la Luz and the Costal del Sol . Interesting is the harbour of Almerimar with cosy bars, just south of El Ejido (Almeria).
Very unique architecture can be found in Cedoba, Salamanca, Granada, Toledo, Madrid... The visionary architecture of Antoni Gaud?and the Picasso museum are in Barcelona while Madrid is home to Spain top three art museums.

Re: Beaches in Europe
Yes, Croatian part of Adriatic coast is beautiful.
Incredible coastline, many islands, peninsulas, lagoons, and stuff like that.
If you have a chance go there, it's really amazing.
Greece is also goreous as long as you stick to islands. Beautiful indeed.

Re: Beaches in Europe
Yes, Spain is really a beautiful country in the world to visit. Barcelona and Madrid are both great cities. I feel very lucky to have spent a lot of time in Spain. Some other cities to visit: Salamanca, near Portugual, has beautiful architecture. The Basque country, too. San Sebastian is possibly the most beautiful city in the region, but Bilbao is worth visiting for the Guggenheim museum and old town, and the little seaside village of Hondarabbia. Outside Madrid are towns like Segovia, Toledo, and Avila, Toledo is probably the most famous. And Andalucia in the south, Grenada for the Alhambra, and Cordoba is very charming. Seville is very touristic but the old quarter is fantastic and you have to visit the bull ring for a tour!
The Lonely Planet guide books are always an excellent source of info and they tend to be honest, too—some guidebooks manage to find charm everywhere, but LP tells it like it is, so you don't waste time or money. As for taking the train, I found buses to actually be better. They are quite cheap and reasonably comfortable. A friend and I took the bus from Madrid to Grenada, and then travelled by bus all over Andalucia, and it was fine.
Missed the Picasso museum in Barcelona! I spent too much time in the old town...

Countryside in Spain
If you would rather get some fresh air, Spain is filled with opportunities to visit wildlife parks as well as trekking. The Pyrenees, especially around the Aragon area, are the best areas for trekking. Andalusia has its Sierra Nevada mountain chain with luxurious skiing resorts near Granada. Ski-sports are possible from November up to May. Between Guadix and Bazaar (famous horse market) one can find cave-dwellings, cave hotels, and beautiful natural parks. North and between these towns still are unexplored desert sceneries, with hamlets not even found on maps! The highway infrastructure in this "wild" part of Andalucia is excellent.

Re: Beaches in Europe
Euskadi - I recommend the French side. Spanish beaches are not famous for being clean... and expect to find a few needles too.
Go to the Coste Basque. Euskadi stands for Basque Country in the Basque language.
And we have waves. You can find good waves all along the basque coast. Then again, like I said, the French beaches are much cleaner than the Spanish ones, trust me, I've seen the difference many times.
The problem is that even in a big town like San Sebastian, they might have the resources to clean the beach but the sea pollution is atrocious. 90% of the pollution we get on our beach (platic bottles, bags, used napkins, condoms... rubbish) comes straight from Spanish garbage disposal centers situated too close to the sea shore. After a big storm the likes of which happen frequently in the Gulf of Viscaye, all this rubbish goes down in the sea. All the drains get full, the water tops over in the cities, the harbors, the disposal centers etc etc.....
Add in the propensity of Spanish towns to throw rubbish on the beach and in the sea and you get some seriously disgusting beaches in northen Spain.

Re: Beaches in Europe
Absolutely. If you like the calm and sometimes windy mediterranean sea, go for Grece. Corsica and Sicily are also beautiful. The French coast is not amazing, too much real estate development. I dunno about Italy. Then obviously you have malaga, ibiza... supposed to be pretty cool. And lets not forget the Canary Island off the side of Senegal, those are european islands! My favorite is Lanzarote.... a lunar landscape and a wide variety of beaches.

Portugal and spain both have great surfing beaches...Portugal beaches can be beautiful but clogged with garbage, same as bali and some beaches in hainan, a big pity...

Re: Beaches in Europe
Although the vacant sand to sun-bather ratio on European beaches must be the lowest in the world, the t-back, topless or nude to sun bather ratio is the highest, so it's swings and roundabouts really.

France.. some of the cleanest beached in Europe. Unrivaled by Spain, Portugal or Italy.
Greece.. beautiful water, beautiful wild beaches. You might need a sailing boat though... so many islands to visit!
And don't forget Cornwall in England! Clean enough water and surf.... summertime only ; )
Big reef swell at the top of ireland too...

And for German beaches:
Darss is nice. And there are loads of small lakes all over the country where you can swim in summer. No need to go to the coast if it's too far away.

Re: Beaches in Europe
I have the feeling that this thread started as a commercial for spanish beaches, with all the links to spanish stuff. But I'm happy to see that many posted here to show that that's not the best place to go.
It's a bit up north, like the UK and Germany, but the Dutch beaches are awesome in summer. Only sand, no rocks, and HUGE! Try Schevingen or Zandvoort, or one of the smaller cities in the province of Zeeland if you also like a good 'after beach' party. Wassenaar and Bloemendaal are famoes for their trendy beach bars (which go on until late in the night). If you want a more quiet beach, try the islands in the north (no cars allowed on Schiermonnikoog or Walcheren; everything done walking or on a bike). But again, this is summertime fun. Otherwise Holland is too cold.
For more southern destinations I prefer south of France (both mediteranee and atlantic) for the nice weather, cheap fresh oysters and rose wine, and plenty of nude beaches (like mentioned before, Agde is a very famous one). We have those in the Netherlands too btw.
Qingdao is pretty cool. If you like Qingdao.....

Re: Beaches in Europe
Spain is a spectacular and diverse country. My colleagues and I have made several times trip abroad and we unanimous deem that Spain is the most country we have been to. We not only enjoy its bullfights, flamenco dancers and crowded beaches, but also admire its social culture. Spanish people are very open-hearted and communicative. You won't have any problems to get to know someone, especially in the big cities like Madrid or Barcelona. If you want to go to Spain be on a tour, the sites costa brava holidays and ibiza beach may help you a lot.
