compensation???

Hi guys, just want to know how much is the average salary for a full time instructor job in Beijing and besides the pay are there any other things that should be included like visa and housing? Cause im being offered to transfer there by another company but im not sure if what they are offering is competetive enough. Thanks in advance!!!

Re: compensation???

Instructor of what? It depends?

And it doesn't matter what the average is. You demand what you deserve for your skill and experience.

Re: compensation???

Re: compensation???

Well that depends. Are you working as a regular english teacher like all the other monkeys in beijing or are you being hired by one of the private international expat schools?

You must have the utmost respect for regular english teachers in Beijing by this post. Laughing

Sorry to disappoint AmBj'er, don't go out during the week as my work keeps me on my toes (the law does that to you)... however, will be heading out this weekend to check out my friend's new bar at woman's bar street/street bar woman's/ bar woman's street (you get the idea).

And yet you hang out at a place that's full of those you seem to despise so much? Is there a story behind that? Thinking:

You go there to mock them; or perhaps one of them left a bad taste in your mouth?

Re: compensation???

They probably all taste bad.

But no, I actually don't think i've met many english teachers at the rickshaw. I can only think of one or two maybe. All the regulars I hang out with there have real jobs. Besides, pretty much everywhere but centro has an english teaching crowd--they're as unavoidable as mosquitoes in Louisiana.

SXD, sounds like you're just jealous that no one wants to have a drink with you!

Are you at it again Beerfish. By the way ABJinger, Beerbreast was a classic!

Well, I had occasion to be up in Beijing last week for a few days, so I decided to see what all you guys were talking about; this Rickshaw place. While it was one of the better ones that I perused on this supposed miracle mile, I have come to dub SanliTURD or TARD, whichever your preference; I was far from being jealous and was so glad to get back to a real bar town like Chengdu, which actually has bars over 50 square meters in size and which have room enough in them to support more than just the "in" expat crowd.

If you come down to my neck of the woods, I will be sure to treat you to more than a Fillipino foursome ala "Swing", or some pseudo-exotica stage show by two dime-a-dozen lyp-sinc artists a couple of doors down from that. At least the Tiger beer chick was hot piece to look at.

Please tell me this is not the best on offer?

Bar-wise, did you check out the other spots behind Sanliturd as you call it - like Kai, Shooters, The Tree, etc... Those places, albeit tight, are not that bad.

If you want something thats over 50 feet square meters in size, have you checked out Goose and Duck or Tim's - unfortunately, they are mostly expats and have fillipino foursome's going at it all night long.

If you want local, you have to go to the clubs rather than the bars, although Ive been to some pretty cool really local bars on the west side of town - you literally walk in and wonder why you decided to not take your friend's advice and check out Browns (example folks - I know most of you don't like it) and find yourself with eyes glancing over at you every 30 seconds.

Does this make sense at all - ive been staring at this screen too long today and my eyes are about to fall out.

Re: compensation???

Exuse me... did I miss something? The topic is about working in Beijing! Why do you discuss clubs and bars here? The guy asked you a question, you can't even reply him, but turned his topic to a silly discussion like "what bar is the best to hang in..." Thinking

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

Re: compensation???

Well he hasn't told us yet if he's a real teacher or a monkey.

Re: compensation???

I think a real teacher should have proper skills and education. Also a real teacher should be a fan of what he's doing. I mean he must really love what he's doing. hey, guys, btw how much a skilled teacher can get per hour?

8 years ago, corporate gig rates were between 275-350 RMB per hour. From what I hear these days though, you're lucky to get half of that?

Teaching kids, I would have to guess around 15,000-20,000 a month if you were a bit of a work-horse and take OT gigs. Of course, any school should give you a free apartment, all expenses paid.

I don't agree that you have to be a fan of what you are doing or love it for that matter. It's an easy way to get here, slog a few hours and to see what else is available and/or use it as your bread and butter to do other things on the side.

How come Beerfish gets all the free lessons? You suspect he needs them? A mercy ____?

Tongue

Re: compensation???

Actually its not english teaching its more on developmental psychology like how to help kids develop their full potential and instructing parents what to do with their child at a certain age. For the kids its more like playing with a purpose during the class cause thats the way toddlers learn but together with their parents.

Thanks for all the replys!

Give up monkey! The posters have tuned you out either because they're bored or just can't give you an answer...or both!
