Grandma's Kitchen vs. Paul's Steak and Eggs
Which one do you think is better? When I first got to Beijing all the stuff I found on the Internet was about how Steak & Eggs was the "best" place for North American food. I was REALLY disappointed when I eventually went. Not to mention that I don't like how the owner treats his staff.
I've since discovered Grandma's Kitchen and fallen in love. It's really authentic American food! Everything is fresh and tasty. The service is much better. I feel comfortable in the environment. I tried the Apple Cake the other evening and it was divine. The restaurant was also crowded (with a number of Chinese customers, as well). By contrast, I never see anyone inside Steak & Eggs.
Which do you prefer?

Grandma's Kitchen's environment is much better. Also, Steak and Eggs food is not so fresh at all. My vote is on Grandma's Kitchen.

Re: Grandma's Kitchen vs. Paul's Steak and Eggs
both of them do breakfasts well, i give Steak and Eggs the edge due to bottomless coffee and large slabs of meat in their "heart attack" breakfast or whatever they call it
if it's lunch or dinner I'd definitely prefer Grandma's

Re: Grandma's Kitchen vs. Paul's Steak and Eggs
I've never been to Grandma's. I end up always just going to Paul's out of habit, and if Paul saw me go over there, I think he would look like I betrayed him or something......And I like the bottomless coffee. Does Grandma's offer that?

Re: Grandma's Kitchen vs. Paul's Steak and Eggs
Not sure about the bottomless cups of coffee. That is a "perk" though.

Re: Grandma's Kitchen vs. Paul's Steak and Eggs
I don't think Grandma's offers bottomless coffee. But, I know Paul's coffee is not drinkable. I never order coffee when I go to Paul's.

Re: Grandma's Kitchen vs. Paul's Steak and Eggs
I only go to steak and eggs ocassionally for their biscuits and gravy--soooooo good. For all my other american food needs I go to grandma's. Chicken sandwiches, salads, burgers, fries--all good.

Re: Grandma's Kitchen vs. Paul's Steak and Eggs
Maybe it's a result of too much Sichuan, but I find Grandma's food to be tasteless-fresh, but tasteless. Except for the shakes-those I can down like tsingdao's.

Re: Grandma's Kitchen vs. Paul's Steak and Eggs
Grandma's Kitchen's better.
I once had a strawberry short cake at Paul's and it was very disappointing. Went back to try other things, and the chicken wings were very disappointing.
Though Paul is a very friendly person. food is just so-so.

I went to 'Steak and Eggs' once.
Found it overrated and expensive.
Just a few blocks south and behind Scitec, I found 'Welcome Break' for an English Fry-up and a large (Humungous) cappuccino for 51 RMB all else pales.

Grandma's has bottomless cups of coffee before 11, and its a pretty good cup of coffee. I'm a fan, I admit.

Re: Grandma's Kitchen vs. Paul's Steak and Eggs
I used to like the Steak&Eggs combo and Steak & Eggs before they raised the price. Admittedly, it's still worthwhile but no longer as good of a deal.
The Sandwiches there used to be good, especially the burger, but they've gone down in quality. However, they still make one of the better mai tais in town for 15rmb.
At Grandma's ( Jianwai SOHO branch), everything I've tried has been tasty... I love the mexican skillet.
I have not been to either in a while but if I were to pick one right now, I'd say grandma's.

I used to like Steak & Eggs when i worked in that area and they had the breakfast special before 9am during the week. Not sure if they still have that or not. Never really liked their coffee so bottomless for me was not that important.
Have been to Grandma's and they do offer you more coffee in the morning, but not sure if they also do that on the weekend. Also, the desserts are much better there. Paul's stuff is not always fresh and was even worse at his Shunyi location when he had one there.

Re: Grandma's Kitchen vs. Paul's Steak and Eggs
The food at both are jut OK, my issue is the service. I've gone to the Soho Grandma's a few times for a late weekend breakfast, when it was not busy at all, and waited FOREVER for it to come out. The last time after waiting about 30-35 minutes for a simple egg breakfast, I told them I didn't want it anymore and left. I do still get their delivery sometimes and thats not bad, although a little cold by the time it arrives. As for the menu, it's hit or miss, the mexican items are horrible! But I suppose "Grandma" ain't "Grandma Sanchez"

Re: Grandma's Kitchen vs. Paul's Steak and Eggs
One of the great mysteries of BJ is how Paul's Steak and Eggs can continue to rate favorably—let alone in the top 10 places to dine in this city. Must be ballot stuffing...
This place is uncomfortable, not particularly clean, new wait staff are perpetually in training (and do not speak any English), and the menu lacks a single creative assembly. If eggs fried in vegetable oil, served with convenience store toast & sausage rounded off with cheap artificial maple syrup are your thing—then you may like this dive.
Grandma’s Kitchen, Café Taipan, and Peter’s TexMex are within the same block and are way better, as is American Cafe.
The only thing “American” about this place is the poor nutritional content of the food and the influx of Americans who are duped by their advertising and ratings. Chinese staff, the owner’s Chinese patrolling the joint, Chinese allocation of napkins—even the effigy of Paul looks decidedly un-American (without the words you would guess that it is a Middle Eastern restaurant. No normal American would shamelessly use his picture in such pervasive advertising).
Their motto should be: Come because of the hyperbole and dubious ratings—never go back because of the lousy food and service.

Prefer Grandma's. For the food and the waitresses are cuter.

Re: Grandma's Kitchen vs. Paul's Steak and Eggs
I think it's also a play on words. It says a "North American" diner. That could mean Canada. Anyone know where Paul hails from?

Re: Grandma's Kitchen vs. Paul's Steak and Eggs
Is there more than one Grandmas? I've only been to the one in JianWai SOHO. The food was OK. Since I'm back and forth all the time, I usually just wait until I get back to NYC for my usual Greek greasy spoon diner meal.
Where is the Paul's place?
Best,

Re: Grandma's Kitchen vs. Paul's Steak and Eggs
Grandma's and Paul's Steak and Eggs are both located at Jianguomen. It's around the corner from T.G.I. Friday's. They are several little foreign restaurants in this area.

My first Grandma's Kitchen experience was in Chengdu. It was great, and in Chengdu of all places!

I believe Paul is from Canada but did run American diners in the USA, in Florida I think. The Grandmas and Pauls are almost next to each other behind the Friendship store on Jianguomen.

If Paul sees this thread he is going to be angry and will start kicking the beggar kids outside the restaurant harder.
He still does a good business, but I do think the quality has diminished somewhat. And I fully know that the quality has not been what we might call great, but does fill the need or cravings that us foreigners get on occasion.

Re: Grandma's Kitchen vs. Paul's Steak and Eggs
I also went to the Grandma's Kitchen in Chengdu and was very satisfied. Two weeks ago I went to the new one on Wudaokou. IT SUCKS!
I waited an hour for my food, and I couldn't finish it. Paid 60 kuai for a luke-warm burrito with less than a teaspoon of crappy sour cream that looked like bird sh*t. My friend never got his food, a sandwich, and we won't be going back there until we've heard a hundred people praise it up into the skies. I very seldom complain, but this was the worst experience I've ever had in China.
And I was really looking forward to it too. DAMN IT!

I didn't know there was a new one in Wudaokou. Where is it? How far from the subway?

Re: Grandma's Kitchen vs. Paul's Steak and Eggs
top floor of the new lianhua shopping mall
directly east of the subway station, on the south side of the street
I haven't been yet, so can't comment on the food/service
It just opened very recently, less than a month ago, so some problems with the service may be growing pains

Re: Grandma's Kitchen vs. Paul's Steak and Eggs
I've been to both only once or twice. At Steak & Eggs, the service was bad. They forgot all about our drinks; I had to ask for them after I got our food (true american style is bring the drinks ASAP) and even then he only brought one drink and we had to hunt him down to bring the other, which was the bottomless coffee... so it sucked because there was barely a chance to even have a refill; my friend was halfway done eating by the time he even got it. The food was ok I guess, but I was distracted by the awkward order things came out in and the lack of beverage or waiter for so long.
Grandma's Kitchen Soho - The omelette with veggies was huge, but the veggies weren't cooked into it, they were just placed on top. I actually never had an omelette like that in the US; they'd always be mixed in during cooking, so it didn't remind me of an american diner at all.
And the mint tea - omg - there was SO MUCH mint in it, like a handful of leaves; it was so strong I could NOT drink it, so I took all the leaves out and had to give a hassle for more hot water to dilute it; he was pretty much not allowed to give me hot water or something, but he finally did after i acted like, "hey buddy c'mon, it's WATER".
I HATE THAT! What's with all the foreign restaurants not wanting to give hot water? Every chinese restaurant does it, and we're in china, just give us the free harmless hot water, geez. I mean NOT EVEN A TEA REFILL. If I just paid 25kuai for a cupful of mint leaves damnit, be prepared to give me a stupid refill of WATER. Geez.

i've been to steak & eggs a handful of times. i've never had problems with service. the food is ok for beijing. the prices are a bit high especially for the steak. do yourself a favor, if you like steak, stay away from their steak. it's pretty BAD. the burgers and sandwiches are ok. the only reason why i would go back is if i am with my dog. their sidewalk tables are perfect when you are hanging out with the dog.

Grandmas Kitchen in Wudaokou is weak. very weak.
Haven't been to the older one. Won't.
Plus, the people that recommended it here are a bit weird.
