I'm freezing!
Aargh! It's only mid-October and I'm already freezing in my own apartment. I'm not sure I'm going to survive another month until they turn on the heat. What do you all do? Buy a space heater? Bundle up? Just freeze through most of October and November?
If anyone can recommend a type of space heater, I would appreciate it. I have no idea which one to buy and the store clerks were less than helpful.

Re: I'm freezing!
I bought radiator heaters which have a thermostat so I could keep them on low overnight, warming the room of the child who gets asthma from the cold. They are effective. I did find we blew a fuse if we plugged in more than 2 heaters though.

I live in an expensive expat type apartment that is warm and cozy.

Re: I'm freezing!
Just get the cheapest heater there. The one that looks like a fan. Those things BURN you if you get to close, and hell yes they work. You won't make any friends in the environmental movement or at the power company for running that thing, though.
Oh, and, seriously, try some hot water/coffee/tea/whatever. It really does help in this weather.

collect and burn that's Beijing, City Weekend, Time Out and Beijing Talk (hell, they're free)
Alternately you could shred them and fill your bathtub with the shreds and nestle in, gerbil style

Re: I'm freezing!
It has been a bit chilly lately and we have had to use our heat from the airconditioning units. I would guess most of the new airconditioners have the heat as well, but maybe in some older buildings just have cooling.
Anyway, its a thought OP, you might want to try.

Re: I'm freezing!
most department stores and guomei type places are loaded with the space heaters. I got one that's called a ceramic heater, not sure why, but it was a little black box of a thing, cost less than 400 kuai and served me well for 4 years.

It may be that you live in a concrete block like most of us other beijingers. Now is the time to start sealing up those windows cos that's where it's likely coming from. That should solve most of it. Then get some thick socks and gloves for in-home use.

Re: I'm freezing!
- Small blanket to keep me warm in the living room (just wrap it over your shoulders, cheap fleeze ones from IKEA are good).
- Socks or foot muffs or anything that'll keep your feet happy and cosy. I saw these funny little warming pillows you can stick your feet in at a supermarked, I think they're elctrical as well so should work.
- Extra duvet in the bed room, be warned though, it makes it twice as hard getting up in the morning...
- Radiator, I've got one that has a fan thing on the side as well if its extra cold. Uses lots of electricity though, but then again you prolly stopped using your aircon by now so it all equals out in the end...
- Hot chocolate, tea, warm red wine etc.
- Gloves, scarfs, hats for going outside, so you don't have to spend half an hour just defreezing once you're inside again.

Glühwein or hot Glogg will warm you up. Hot water bottles are def, gotta get the excess air out though and make sure the top is screwed in tightly.

Yea, it's really hard to get through this period even to a native Beijinger here. Some good communities can supply heat earlier but most of them just wait till November 15th. I use a electrothermal blanket on bed, take a electrothermal bag on waist, wear thick wool socks something like that.

Do they ever decide to turn on the heat before November 15? I think I'm starting to get a cold because my room is getting so chilly!

Re: I'm freezing!
There used to be a shop that sold it in satchets, here's a recipe for making it at home.
Hot Mulled Wine (Glühwein, "glow wine")
Ingredients (serves 2-3 persons)
* 1 bottle of dry red wine (750 ml)
* one lemon
* 2 sticks of cinnamon
* 3 cloves
* 3 tablespoons of sugar
* some cardamom (or ginger)
Directions
Heat the red wine in a pot (don't boil). Cut the lemon into slices and add to the wine. Then add the cinnamon, cloves, sugar and a little cardamom (to taste). Heat everything for about 5 minutes - do not boil - and let stand for about an hour. Before serving, reheat and strain. Serve in prewarmed glasses or mugs.

Re: I'm freezing!
Alcohol is good as long as you're not so cold that you're risking your health. It doesn't really warm you up, just makes you feel like you're warming up. That is to say, it can be dangerous to rely on alcohol to warm up unless you're not really cold in the first place.
The best solution is to dress up warmly, even while indoors, and drink lots of hot liquids. Take a lesson from all those hard-core street vendors in Beijing (and I don't mean to wheel around a stove full of baking sweet potatoes).
And the best solution ever... LONG JOHNS!!
Anybody remember the old M*A*S*H episodes when they had to deal with cold weather? Fighting over long underwear, electric socks, etc. They don't make TV shows like that anymore.

Re: I'm freezing!
I've found the oil filled heaters that look like radiators are the best... they have a thermostat and radiate a good amount of heat.
In the Wu mart and other stores they sell for about 400-500 rmb....but I found them for starting at 160-180 rmb asking price...
The place is the electronics market at lady bar street. To get there, go to Liang Ma Qiao and go east of the lufthansa centre (towards the Kempinski). At the intersection where Maizidian turns in to Tianzi street, go North (left) on Tianzi street...Just past the UBC coffee place, go right - its the lane at Super Bar street ( there may be an O'Mart sign on the east side of the street) and continue down the lane then into the market just past Bitta Pitta and the new Tibmed Spa.
There is a large market of cell phones, audio stuff etc... and computer stuff real cheap.... on the first floor, in the area to the right of the centre stair case, they sell lots of heaters...
Mines working fine keeping me warm!

Re: I'm freezing!
I heard this year they will turn on the heat on Nov 7. The infra-red type are instant high heat. Have one down south where there is no heat. I like the radiator type for about 350-500 Yuan (depends on how many coils and works with oil inside, but takes a little longer to crank up,Midea very good and last). The heaters with the light bulbs running parallel to the ground always burn out in a week, don't buy them.
And keep some water on top of the radiator to put some moisture back in the air and buy vaselene intensive care lotion for body. These dry heaters will dry every ounce of moisture out of your skin.
The best is still the live warmer
