Thailand resort
All you regular visitors to Thailand may be able to help me here. I'm planning a personal olympic boycott in Thailand next august, and wonder if I can get some recommendations. I know I need to go to the more southern islands as it's rainy season in the north. Not really into diving or watersports so much- nor hardcore partying of the 'full moon' nature. Really just looking for a romantic spot to take my lover and a pile of books. Good seafood to eat, beach and pool for swimming are essentials. Hopefully can get some ideas on the more luxurious scale, as well as some moderate options. Have been searching online, but the number of hotels is just overwhelming.
Thanks.

Re: Thailand resort
Phuket does it for me. Its a bustling island with a whole host of options. Patong beach is over-run with tourists and not my favourite spot, however, Kata Noi Beach (south of Patong, beyond Karon) is simply brilliant. There is a nice boutique resort on the main beach, however, if you wish to splash out, there are luxury villas for rent, nestled in the hills surrounding Kata Noi Beach.
A day trip to Phiphi Islands and Krabi is also highly recommended.

Re: Thailand resort
Any suggestions for the gulf-coast south of Bangkok, I want to go somewhere where it looks like in "the Beach". I'm on a budget and will start out in Bangkok.
You said, you just decide what beach you want to go to and go, without booking.. Is that true for the christmas and new-years season?
Thanks for any advice or opinions!

Re: Thailand resort
any reasons, why you are going so far south an not just down to ko samet, for example?
are you booking a flight from bangkok, or taking the train?
you too, have a great time! i'm so excited...

Re: Thailand resort
That looks like Krabi, from Kao Sarn road you can take a night bus (around 1,000 baht or 200 RMB) leaving at around 6 pm and arriving early in the morning. If you are pushed for time, you can also fly there.
If you are on a budget, I would recomend staying on Ton Sai beach which is right next to the very famous railey beach. You can walk to railey during low tide, kayak there, or hire a boat for super cheap. To get to ton sai from the bus stop, catch a song taew to the main beach drag of Krabi and from there catch a short boat ride past the peninsula. Even though it is on the mainland, it is only accessible by boat which makes it very special. Lots of monkeys etc there.
Its a 'climbers' beach, a lot of people go there just to rock climb but still great if you are looking to chill on the beach. There are also a bunch of outlying islands that you can kayak to (e.g. Chicken Island) and you can take a day trip to Phi Phi Island (Koh phi Phi) where they filmed the beach (Maya beach on Phi Phi Lei)

Wow!!! Thanks!
And thats the bus from bangkok? Easy to find information there..? I arrive in bangkok the 22nd, afternoon and will just to be safe book a room beforehand... but then i was thinking going from there without reservations.. and find out more in thailand itself? Just worried, because of the christmasseason with overbooked places..?
I should better head down south then, if i want that:

Re: Thailand resort
Yes, you can take the bus from bangkok. From the airport take a taxi to kao sarn road. Every cabbie should know it. Once you are on Kao Sarn road, just go to one of the many travel agents there. I would get a lonely planet or do some research before you go. In any case there will be a bunch of other travellers who should be heading in the same direction so they should also be able to help you out.
It is super busy during the x-mas season, so I would book in advance just in case. Its safer to have a room for one night, look around and move if you have to. That way at least you wont be stranded.

Look at the title of the thread. That usually helps.
Or you could even try reading the thread too.

Re: Thailand resort
??? I've been all over Thailand, except for the extreme south and the extreme northeast, and I would say that Phuket definitely does not the nicest beaches in Thailand.
However you can get to some great beaches by boat from Phuket.
