Stuck in a culinary rut - what are your top restuarants?

Suddenly last weekend the film ratatouille reminded me there is more to eat in this world than Chinese on ghost street and the restaurants of Beijing goodies.

In fact I've been in something of a food rut for the last few months - found the restaurants I like and don't go anywhere else, I think I'm missing out but I'm quite lazy:-)

I did go to a Thai hotpot (yellow leaf)last week which was new(for me) and excellent. I thought of fondue too, so I'll go try that and I want to try chef too's as well after seeing the thread here.

I guess other people here will have the same as me, as in a few staple restaurants they always go to - I'm totally bored with my food choices at the moment so maybe I can get some inspiration.

Here are mine - not because I think they are the best, but for whatever reason they have become my most visited restaurants - combination of quality, cost, proximity to my house I guess. (and this is going out, not ordering in)

In no particular order.(yes i know my pinyin is crap - shut up)

1. Matsuko japanese - 3rd ring
2. Phrik Thai - yabalu
3. hua jia yi yuan?sp - chinese ghost street
4. nuage - vietnamese, ho hai
5. morels
6. korean bbq on chun xiao lu
7. hot fish place at nu ren jie

What are your "default" restaurants? Give me some ideas

Smile

Re: Stuck in a culinary rut - what are your top restuarants?

wow, you seem to like traveling around a lot to different restaurants.

I normally stick close to home, and as I am not pulling in the big bucks, mostly go to local Chinese places....though I also have a weakness for coffeeshops. Oh and I also have a weird obsession with the Greek Salad at Fish Nation, because it is close to my place.

they are all probably in a 2km radius from my house, I like to eat. I spend most of the afternoon thinking about what to eat for dinner Smile

The variety and quality of restaurants is one of my favourite things about bj. Coming from the uk it's like food heaven...

Re: Stuck in a culinary rut - what are your top restuarants?

I hate to rain on all the restaurants parade, but MY Kitchen at home is the best place for a meal.

The choices are boundless, the preparation unmatched and if I want to have a conversation with someone I invite them over and cook.

Sorry not a lover of the Chinese Restaurants...............................

Really hard to get a table, too.

Re: Stuck in a culinary rut - what are your top restuarants?

you guys all seem to like asian food quite a lot..

my list is more "european"

- the elephant (russian) yabaolu
- grandmas kitchen (american "homecooking")
- trees (best pizza)
- indian kitchen (lunch menu)

dont get me wrong i do like chinese food, i just tend to return to my roots after a few days of chinese

Re: Stuck in a culinary rut - what are your top restuarants?

I agree for the elephant. My problem is that I like it when I go there with Russian but it is a total disaster when it is me who order... and I must say that the service is absolutely horrible.

I guess your root is cheap European mixed with a touch of commercialized American and average Indian.
