New Zealand accent?
I'm teaching English to a family that wants to immigrate to New Zealand. I was just wondering, what accent do they speak? Is it more British or Australian? Any other things I should know about New Zealand in terms of language besides the stuff I've read on wiki?

Re: New Zealand accent?
from my observation,
it has been like Aussie, but a bit milder,
some vocabulary might be more in common with the UK, and also Aust., as opposed to the US or Canada
i like them all..
What China really needs:
- Bill Nye, "the Science Guy", to come teach them basic Science.
- Jared Diamond, Dan Brown, and Spencer Wells to teach them about world/human history.
- MLK and Gandhi and Einstein to teach them about what being human means.

Re: New Zealand accent?
I would assume Australian just because of the geograpghy.

Ignorant coots!
The accent is very flat, with many vowels sounds pronounced with little distinction.
However main difference is that we pronounce long 'a' sound the same as most British-as in chance and dance (how the Queen would say it right propa' like)

Re: New Zealand accent?
What the f**k!! THat is so awesome! Thank you!
Now I know what NZ accent sounds like AND I have a great show to watch.
By the way, it seems that NZ was definitely influenced by the UK (it's a British colony, just look at the flag) but also Australians (due to their physical proximity), Asians and Europeans (due to immigration). I'm even contemplating moving there myself now.. the weather is nice and the internet is fast.

Ahhh, New Zealand. Clean air, lots of sheep, and home of Jake Tha Mus. Check out the movie Once Were Warriors for an insight into life there, and the best examples of the accent. Nice place to live, great place to visit. Just don't get them to say 666 out loud.
Even a broken clock tells the right time twice a day.

I am From New Zealand and you all have some intresting Views on the language, firstly nothing like the UK..or Aus ..its on its own. You can't teach the slang nor try ... and it is home of Jake Tha Mus..

Re: New Zealand accent?
Ness must be kidding right? The Australian accent is known for being very nasally & high pitched & NZers have deeper voices.
NZers are known for being quieter & laid back whereas Aussies come across as loud, confident American style people.

Re: New Zealand accent?
The Kiwi accent has to be one of the worst in the world.
It is sort of weird Australian/English/Pidgeon farming slang and Scottish down south and probably a bit of Maaaarie influence too bro.
Eg.,
My niece says "I'm a geeeerrrl."
"Fush and chips."
You only really notice how abominable it is when you are away and you hear another Kiwi speaking or hear it on TV.
Plus Auckland has this weird snobby, over-done attempt at being coffe culture superior, just a joke, Auckland is tiny and uncultured. We call them Jafas, just another f-ing Aucklander.
The ex All Black Sean Fitzpatrick is an example of having it.
The thing about New Zealand is it is a wonderfully beautiful and clean country, just a shame about the weird, closed-minded, judgmental, culturally doomed boring and violent people who populate it.
Weird energy but great beaches and mountains.
The weeds not bad too.

Kiwis have the most socially attractive English accent outside of the motherland, eh.
According to a BBC survey, the New Zealand accent is one of most charming and prestigious English accents outside of Britain.
New Zealand English came in ahead of Australian, American and most regional British accents in the study published in the international Journal of Sociolinguistics, edited by Auckland University of Technology professor Allan Bell.
More than 5000 respondents from throughout Britain completed an online survey rating the prestige and social attractiveness of 34 different accents of English speakers.
Although I lived in NZ for 30 years I am still instantly recognisable as a POM by accent in NZ, though when I return to UK my accent has been sufficiently skewed that POMs cannot place me.
This is usually upsetting for a POM as from the moment you open your mouth you are pigeon-holed as to class, region, and school.
The strength of NZ accent does vary but I find it inoffensive though the tendency of females to Yiess frequently with the rise in pitch at the end of every sentence can be off-putting. Kind of makes every thing sound like a question to the uninitiated.
Robert you clearly have some issues perhaps related to bad experiences a tendency that seems to follow you where ever you go. Take a look at yourself before you write a whole country and their people off.
Anyway the BBC say Zild is cool and I tend to agree. There are far worse.

And I like Jamaican and Irish accents the best.

Re: New Zealand accent?
I find it to have more of an English twinge, with Aussie mannerisms and expressions.
More flat than either.
Uh, yeah everyone in New Zealand is an alcoholic, wife-beating Maori.

Re: New Zealand accent?
This is soo true!
The class system based on so many factors.
My family, pretty wealthy from Hampshire, war heroes galore, blah, blah, moir a lawyer, but when I opened my mouth it was made clear to me where my status level lay exactly in the Putney law firm I worked in.
It was annoying to say the least. But I got used to it after a while. I mean the lawyers were even scoffed at if they talked to the photocopy and filing girls downstairs.
Actually they turned out to be pretty damn great chaps to work for and even gave me a bonus when I left. Never get that in tight ass NZ.

Sounds like somebody with an underarm problem.
As Muldoon said...I have nothing against the exodus of kiwis to Australia, it raises the average IQ of both countries!

If New Zealand loses the next rugby world cup at home the country will take a mass suicide pact.
Jonestown will be nothing compared to it.
After their deaths they will all be meeting on a great rugby ball spaceship just around Mars.
