New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

One of the most talked about restaurant related things on this forum is where to find Mexican food..... Here I am with your answer.

From the people who started The Saddle, then Cox, then The Rickshaw, now bring you the newest and largest creation... The Saddle Cantina.

The New Saddle, The Rickshaw's big Mexican brother is located in the new complex on Sanlitun Bar Street. Next to 3.3 on the south side, you will see a huge white 6 story compound which will house everything from bars and restaurants to successful Beijing retail stores and International brands.

The Saddle is a two story building within the courtyard which will have a rooftop and a massive outdoor deck as well as courtyard seating.

We have our own micro-brewery where we will be making our own beers and the most extensive tequila menu in Beijing. We will have pool tables and games and the greatest part of all will be our amazing Mexican menu. A few Tex-Mex items will feature but really authentic, fresh Mexican food will star.

Look forward to exciting events, special days with special deals, an amazing Happy Hour and a huge opening party with sombreros and pinatas galore. The opening party will be in the first 2 weeks of March.

A website in on the way, the facebook group is already up.

We are looking for more staff members too, if you know any chefs tell them to send me an email, any nationality welcome.

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

Warning: totally unrequested advice below

Is that the official name - The Saddle Cantina? I know Cantina means "bar" in Spanish, but as a name it seems a bit syllable-heavy.

I like plain, old Saddle. Or maybe Hacienda, with the bottom floor being the Cantina (bar) and the rooftop being The Saddle (on top of the Cantina)...

You didn't ask, but since there was a contest to name The Rickshaw, figured I'd throw in my two kuai / pesos.

In any case, I think you should refer to all regular customers as Saddle-ites.

Cheers, Boyce

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

Thanks Boyce,

You being the king of nightlife and restaurants in Beijing I will absolutely take in all of your words, tell the powers that be and then think of an excuse as to why we arent taking your advice a little later when my suggestions are rebuffed.

joking aside, I like the idea of naming different parts of the bar, the new venue is huge and will have at least 4 distinct areas.

I think it might be too late for any big changes though, the name had to be registered for licenses and all and the logo is being printed on the glasses and the sombreros as we speak

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

Is there Chili Con Carne on the menu ?

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

the menu is still being finalized but I will let you know as soon as I do.

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

i'm really excited to hear about the new restaurant. i can't wait to drop in for dinner.

below is my wish list. i'd be happy if i can find one of them in the menu

1. great tacos de asada or al pastor (no cheese or lettuce)
2. oaxacan style mole
3. good salsa bar
4. torta sandwiches (ham/milanesa)
5. chiliquiles for breakfast
6. chorizo
7. aguas frescas (tamarind/horchata)
8. guacamole
9. good margaritas (not served in martini glasses)
10. michoacan style carnitas!!!!

best of luck!!!

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

Chicken mole would be great.

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

Hope the pitchers of margaritas will be there just like the ones over at the Rickshaw Smile

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

Horchata should be pretty easy to source or make here in China, and I'd love to see that as well. Looking forward to the new place!

sorry, I do in fact know what mole is. However, I still can't really see it on a menu without losing a bit of my appetite

Living in the land of morning calm...

Mole sauce is made with unsweetened chocolate. If I saw that mole I would loose my appetite as well. Laughing

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

Sopapillas and Horchatas would be great.

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

Sometimes mole sauce calls for unsweetened chocolate sometimes it doesn't. I hope some restaurant would put it on their menu.

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

Isn't the new place right next to "Luga's"?

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

I must be the only one...
but I don't want somwhere to try to serve fancy mexican food...

I would really prefer a simple menu with better quality ingredients -
nice black beans,
homemade (vegetarian) refried beans,
fresh salsa (maybe a few types, but fresh!)
fresh avocados/guacamole,
homemade tortillas and tortilla chips for that matter...
good quality chicken/beef/pork/shrimp/fish etc....
Sure have a nice mole (if you can) and other more complex dishes, but the for me, the simple stuff is what makes me come back.

A few nice touches like mexican hot chocolate drink, a selection of hot sauces, some nice tequilas, etc...
a couple fresh fruit juice type or lemon/lime drinks would be great...

Looking fwd to trying it!!

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

Did they say they will serve "fancy" Mexican food? I would never call the Rickshaw food fancy

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

And a NO SMOKING SECTION PLEASE!!

I didn't mean 'fancy' as in expensive and posh, I meant it more in terms of complex dishes...

The best food I had in mexico was simple and fresh.
My favourite burrito places in the USA are simple too.
I think the more complex dishes with multiple ingredients get harder and harder to reproduce the further away you are from the source...

But that's just my opinion, either way, we will be trying it out and hope we like it!

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

I second the no-smoking section.

Agree with the Mexican food. The best stuff I have ever had was at those 24-hour taco stands in southern California at 2 am after a night out Smile

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

yeah-there's a great one in Santa Monica. Best

always hear the craziest sh*t standing outside one of those at 3 am or so...fights, puking. chicks getting nekked and peeing on the sidewalk, good stuff

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

Has anyone tried Luga's?

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

I third the no smoking section.

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

I thought advertising wasn't allowed on here.

or are there exceptions?

course there are.

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

Isn't it more like an event announcement? The grand opening

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

Ok. And the fitness trainer was announcing he was a fitness trainer, and he is open for business.

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

I think it's pretty immoral that you'd open right next to luga's and pretty much copy his entire menu, shame on you for stealing his ideas.

Laughing

Re: New Mexican Restaurant - The Saddle Cantina

What's the deal with the microbrewery? Who is your brew master? Any chance you'd be brewing American or British style ales? I would kill for a good ESB or pale ale at a decent price. That Toper place is okay, but just okay, with no ale and a middling dark.

Also, I'd love to have a place to go for real California style burritos.
